Does anyone else, while listening to the outro music for the podcast, picture Rym and Scott dancing in a disco train with a bunch of 70's dressed black teens?
I need someone with an American credit card to make a purchase for me. (No loan is needed, everything will be paid upfront by me). Anyone willing to help me out? Ignore the above, YoshoKatana helped me. He's a nice guy.
I believe the generally accepted base level is the Fuck. As in "Like I give one fuck," or "I have no fucks to give." I suppose you can break them down into centifucks and milifucks, or have larger units like kilofucks for times when your fuck output is exponential (like when you're nerding out).
So, I just got invited to host a panel at a new convention an hour or so from where I live in August. This is the full text of the message:
Hey, we heard really good things about your MLP-themed sound engineering panels at AX last year. There's a new con in California called Anime California that would love if you wanted to host there. If you're interested, please email me at california@animecon.org - Thank you for taking the time to read!
The consensus on Facebook is that I should ask to be paid. Considering they're a new con, I don't think they'd want to give me money, but I'm not sure. I've only been doing conventions for about a year and a half so I've never been comp-ed for paneling outside of free badges. It's, optimally, an hour's drive but that can easily turn to two hours with traffic so I do want to be compensated in some way, but I don't know what to ask for.
I think, to make it worth the while of both me and the convention, I'd like to offer them the standard 5 hour's of panels/workshops I do at most conventions and ask them to schedule it all in one day and to pay for either my hotel room for that night or for a full tank of gas. I'd also like to ask to be listed as a Guest on their website.
Victor, if you explain the situation, you'll get the best deal. Here is an example from an email I got asking me to be a guest and perform at a juggling convention:
"My normal deal for juggling festivals is that they pay all travel, food and accommodation expenses, plus whatever fee they can afford or think is fair. This is typically about 500 euro, but sometimes more and sometimes less, depending on how much the other expenses might be. If I can make it fit with my other work I can be flexible on the money side."
This is from another email:
"Usually I have the same requirements of a juggling convention that wants to book me. They must pay for all my travel, plus my accommodation and food expenses for the duration of the convention, plus other time they want me to spend in the city hanging out with local jugglers. As for a fee on top of that, I ask only what the convention can afford to pay to make it worth my time, or how much they've valued my contribution during the convention. Sometimes this is 100 USD, sometimes 800 or 1000."
And another, from my first reply to a convention invite email where I actually ended up visiting the convention (in Portland, Oregon):
"For performing at juggling conventions, I ask only for cover of travel, accommodation and food while I'm there. The fee on top of that I leave to what the convention can afford in their budget. Sometimes it is €100, sometimes €1,000."
This way I'm sure not to lose any money, and make a bit. I leave it up to the convention to see how much they can afford after the convention is over, or what they have spare in cash, or if they want to "pass the hat" for me. No matter, it's always been worth my time, though comes nowhere close to what I earn as a professional juggler doing a real gig.
Don't listen to Luke. His model works fine in his situation, but he doesn't play the anime con circuit. There isn't enough money in there to get what he's asking for. What you initially posted is about as much as you can ask for from a new con.
So my sister is in New Zeland for christmas and I wanted to ship some stuff to her. The best thing I can think of so far is to jsut get her some stuff through Amazon NZ and have it shipped to her address. Anyone have any better ideas.
Also Im sure I read in a Scifi book that the auther had the idea of space stations with massive girders that they could launch onto earth as a weapon. Anyone have any clues on that or have I been at the christmas cheer to much?
Dropping stuff from orbit/shooting stuff from the moon has been popular in science fiction for decades. I even include a twist on that in one of my novels. You'll have to be more specific.
Being able to drop heavy things from orbit is one of the easiest and cheapest deterrents to get when you have space travel. I really hope we do something about war before we have cheap space travel, because otherwise we'll probably resort to "hit them with an asteroid" methods and kill everyone.

As much as Gundam Wing isn't an objectively good show, I really liked the Operation Meteor stuff.

I seem to remember in Lensman that they would use "planets" to destroy other planets, which is pretty novel.

I'll work up a quick list. Don't worry, nothing too crazy.
Also, is there a metric unit to measure level of interest?

What do you guys think? Reasonable?
