I tried playing the Ultima games recently to see what all the hub bub is about... they don't stand the test of time at all. I can barely play Planescape, honestly. The lack of mousewheel scrolling and being able to zoom out is palpably painful.
They are very old games. Even the more recent ones are still from the early to mid 90s. I tried to play starcraft a few years ago and couldn't do it because of how roomed in you are. I felt like I was being confined in a tiny little box. Claustrophobia inducing even!

I'm curious as to which ones you tried to play?
Whatever the free ones were on GoG. The one set on Mars and the Savage World one, I think. I can get exact titles when I get home from work if you're really curious.
Both the Savage Worlds and Martian Dreams aren't quite in the main story. it's been a very long time since I've bothered to play either of them. It does say that they're based on the Ultima 6 engine so that's not too terrible.
I didn't know they are free though, I'll have to grab a copy of them when I get home!
I would caution about trying to play anything prior to 6. They are all very text heavy and seriously from another time and place! I wasn't joking when you sit there fishing for keywords to advance the dialogue! Looking back on them I am amazed that my young self could get through them.
They are built on the 6 engine, yeah. I had always read that they were really good, though, so I wanted to give them a shot. I think the control scheme and tiny window threw me off. I could totally see playing it when I was a kid and video games were rather slim pickings (I played the fuck out of Ken's Labyrinth Shareware, for instance), and the writing was probably astounding for that day/time, plus oh god you could equip all sorts of weapons and shit.
However, nowadays, anything pre-NWN (and thus pre-camera control and 3d world) are just tragic to play.
They said they were shipping the books soon. I'll probably bug him for a game when I go to PAX, since I haven't actually been able to play it yet (Yes, I backed the Kickstarter solely on the premise of LEGO ROBOT COMBAT).

NO! Bad engine choice bad! 6 did not have a good engine. Stick with 1-5 for the core story and skip the rest. Also they require a FAQ if you are going to play. Example: In Ultima 2 you need to talk to an NPC with a command they do not teach you to give an exact amount of money to get an item you need to beat the game.
Apparently that Veronica Mars movie thing is pretty popular. It may just get their full $2 mil funding on the first day.
It's odd to me that they aren't offering any way of getting an actual movie theater ticket via the Kickstarter. For $35+ you'd think they might be able to cut a deal with Fandango or something, no?
I have a sneaking suspicion that a large chunk of those "donations" came from massive producers anyway, rather than the "crowd". I think this might be a marketing ploy.

Such a conspiracy is just too far-fetched to believe it would happen here, and if it did, it'd be likely to be fucked up and look overly obvious, which in this case, hasn't happened.
On my plane ride home, I saw these people playing The Duke. I was a bit surprised because I recall the updates saying the game won't be shipped out to backers until a month or so. I then did a double take and realized the guys playing were the creators.
I was able to talk to them for a bit telling them how excited I am about a good 2 player game that won't get boring with all the different tiles coming out with different moves. They are also looking to put the game on iOS, Andoid, and consoles for online play. It would be stupid not to.
I saw those creators of The Duke playing it at a table of a TTop vendor. I commented it looked similar to Shogi. I'm pretty sure I've played that game once a long time ago, perhaps at Dragon's Den.
It does look like Shogi, but I've never played it. The game looks to have a lot of replay value, especially with all the tiles they are coming out with. I'm not sure if Shogi has that. It's probably like Shogi, but for Amuricahns.

Goddamn it Josh AC Newman. Give me my LEGO robot fighting!

There are some that I am being way too patient and way too nice about.

Also as Rubin said in the Video Game thread, I also backed Shovel Knight and you all should back Guns of Icarus Online Adventure mode. DO EET.

My Unico book came today. A yearlong wait was worth it.
