Yep. I'm actually more interested in it now though, because I have no good advice for the original problem.
On the topic we've drifted into...
I really want to recite the list of every single conflict I've ever been involved in, but at the same time I wouldn't want that all to be public. Not to say the list is long or anything. I partially attribute it to often being the smallest guy in the room, and it seems like the majority of conflicts either involve the smallest or the biggest guy in any particular room. And I've resolved some of them with words, some by not backing down, some by walking away, and sometimes I've just ended up getting hit.

I've lived for a lot of years being the smallest person in the room and have never felt the need to fight. I've diffused every situation by either not being in the wrong place at the wrong time or not getting angry. Or just being the bigger person and apologizing or stepping back.
I would say you've been lucky or I've been unlucky. Probably both. But I'm actually glad about most things, my mettle and conviction have been tested and I've not been found wanting. I have evidence of my character and various attributes under pressure that I'm proud to have. It also feels great to hear other people tell stories about me, even if it's primarily a comedy.

That's probably accurate. I wasn't trying to downplay you or anything like that. I've also usually thought about things like who I'm around or where I'm going to be and generally not chosen to be in a sketchy place if possible. I've made a lot of choices based on not wanting to put myself in a position where I'd get into a fight. Of course, a lot of it is luck, since I could never really control who came into parties.
No... there's just not really any good advice for this situation. The legal options are pretty much find another lawyer or organization who will represent your cause on the cheap or suck it up.

I still advocate changing all of her contact information. Cut off whatever avenues he's using to keep in touch with her.
There are a lot of different factors on whether or not you'll get mugged, attacked or whatever. You never know whats going to happen. You probably won't get mugged or anything, but saying that you NEVER will is going a little far. While I would like a Concealed Carry Permit, its mainly just for convenience and so if I really ever wanted to carry a pistol with me I could. The problem isn't necessarily people carrying guns, its dumbasses who have this mentality of "derr I'll be fine, I have a gun." Sure, to some people it might come in handy at some point, but if you're some dipshit who gets overconfident because of it then you might as well not carry it at all.
"Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he could be the baddest motherfucker in the world."
Oh yeah, like you don't still think that.
Yeah, Mr. Stephenson was off in his age assignment there. It's really "All men think, every so often..."
Who HASN'T had the occasional kicking-the-mugger's-ass fantasy? I don't think it's just men. And don't even get me started on the fantasies about what I would do to people who threatened my family...

See, you say "occasional." That's entirely how the male brain operates. Every one of us wants to be Rambo, all the time, in every context.
He was also off in the "every so often" part. Or he was understating for comedic effect.

I've had many a fantasy of stabbing a potential mugger in the eye with a sharp stiletto heel. (Although I never wear them so this could never happen).
Anyway, you people that are saying "you will never get mugged"... wow. I guess you live in a pretty safe area or something. We get emails all the time about students/random people being mugged (and even stabbed, shot, raped, etc) on the edge of campus. (There is some law apparently that the school has to email us every crime report around the area). So basically if you walk alone at night in particular places around campus, you are lucky not to get mugged. Andrew's old roomie was visiting a friend's house on the edge of campus, and robbers came crashing through the door with guns and cleaned the place out while everyone was in there.
So yeah, there is no harm in trying to be prepared. I am always super anxious when I'm alone and mentally prepare myself that any person could mug/harm me at any minute. Am I over paranoid? Probably, but if I didn't watch out and actually got mugged, everyone would call me stupid and say I deserved it for not being careful.

While I understand that it's part of your style of speech and am not angry over it, I guess in this particular situation I don't really appreciate "suck it up" being presented as an option. All legal or forum-related matters aside, it's just... gah I dunno. It's a real sensitive thing for me. Sorry Nuri.
I'm not saying you should suck it up. I'm saying our system needs better assistance for the middle class. Basically, I was venting my frustration with the system precisely because "suck it up" is not a viable option.
As someone who lives in an area where people are frequently mugged (both unarmed and at gun- /knife-point), I'm frankly shocked at how unaware some people are walking down the street. My roomate got mugged the day she moved in, because she had two phones out (personal and work) and earphones in her ears.
It's not like I live in the projects, but people need some basic situational awareness.
EDIT: Ninja'd by 10 people. I'm not saying that everyone who gets mugged has it coming, but I find that a lot of the younger people (near colleges, in Williamsburg, etc) really don't have street smarts.
If you said that to me and I was a mugging you, I'd take all your shit, break your phone in front of your face. Then keep your credit cards just to spite you for the inconvenience and hassle of replacing everything.
No hassle to me. I have insurance. The more you do, the easier it is to put you in jail. If you are reasonable, I might not even report it.

See, I take the middle approach. I will not be scared, but I will be aware. Rym is understating the situation, because I know people who have been mugged with knives.

Oh okay, I misunderstood.
I just called a national hotline for DV victims and got a huge list of resources to give to my mom next time we talk. Here's hoping someone from one of these groups or hotlines will be able to do what the police/attorney couldn't.

Hey, Rym's advice is perfectly fine, if you're a young, well paid professional living in a decent area of one of the safest cities in America. But when you leave that area, you want to keep an eye out, just in case. There is always a big difference between baseless paranoia and just being sensibly careful.

I take martial arts focusing on self-defense, including disarming someone with a knife, and I still hope that I never ever have to (attempt to) put it to use in reality.
I live in a neighborhood just about as safe as Rym's, but there was still that incident about 2 years ago where a woman my age was raped and murdered by a drunk guy with a metal pipe in an area considered safe, just past 9:00 PM, and the most anyone did to help was call 911 from a distance. It's things like that which make someone, I guess particularly a woman who must walk alone at night, want to take a little extra precaution no matter where they are.
Stunguns should be legal for conceal and carry with an easy-to-get permit. They're fantastic and relatively safe as a self-defense weapon that requires little training or skill to use effectively.
I suppose I'm also assuming basic situational awareness in all people at all times. ^_~

Then oh noes a bear!
Then rawr hunt bear for food.
Lolcats involving food solve everything.
