So what the fuck was that thing made off to stand up to a lightsaber? Why do I get the feeling the next Star Wars game will feature a lot of those troopers.
There's a few materials that are lightsaber resistant, like Cortosis and Phrik, but it is possible the magnetic field on the maul also helped to parry the lightsaber.
I don't care what it's made of, that guy was legit. I agree that if Phasma had been in that role, no-one would be able to deny she is legit as fugg. But since she wasn't in that role, she was kinda meh and TR-8R gets to be memified.
My theory was that TR-8R had that thing in case Kylo Ren got out of control. Those guys with batons were to beat down out of control Sith wannabees, not resurgent Jedi.
Yeah it was pretty much a new new hope. I get why they went for a soft reboot though. My main complaint is just that they had lots of cool characters and things and not enough time with each of them. I think this is one case where an extended edition/director's cut would help a lot. I still really enjoyed it, it just felt like "hey guys look at all this cool shit we're introducing for future movies" rather than just a good first movie.
I like the idea of the Riot Tonfa, but doubling the length feels like that it would make absurdly unbalanced. I could see it working if he was swarmed by a mob of protesters. I don't really see it working against someone who's trained with a lightsaber. (The solution there would be to get more Riot Troopers.
So here's my beef with this movie. Everything up to the Rey getting captured was pretty awesome, then out of nowhere we have the death planet (starkiller?). It's like they wrote a decent movie and then Disney demanded it had a death star sequence.

At least this Death Star did something different from the one in Jedi.

Was more powerful not different enough? Never mind that at the point when you can blow up a planet, what's the point of more power?

The Death Star II was basically 60% Bigger and the laser could be used on ships. Everyone thought the Death Star in RotJedi was a tired rehash and still is.
Starkiller Base could destroy five separate planets 60,000 light years away and consume Stars as fuel.

EDIT: It's fine that it was safe. It's a children's movie, but I'm not the child I was when I saw the originals so it doesn't have the same impact. That's fair, I'd put it on the same level as RotJ. Empire remains the stand out.
Legs... still need work. I think I may make him a bit shorter because trying to get the contour right at 7'10" is just not working out. :-/
