  • Gothic metal does not equal growling vocals. A good chunk of it has clean vocals.

    Gothic metal without growling:
    The 69 Eyes
    Epica
    Within Temptation

Fair enough, I gave a few of those a listen on YouTube and you are correct, assuming those are indeed gothic metal. Still, it's helping me discover music more quickly and effectively than Pandora seems to.

EDIT - One more thing. Why do symphonic metal bands feel the need to have an obnoxious female vocalist? I like the orchestra + electric guitar sound, but the opera-style vocals (e.g. Nightwish) ruin it every time. Any recommendations from the hivemind?

  • Get the newest Nightwish album. Annette Olzen, the new vocalist, is far more approachable. Tarja was nice, but way too over-the-top.

Also, to be 100% honest, the Wikipedia entry for heavy metal music is shockingly thorough and informative. If you need to know anything about any form of metal, it's probably on there.
  • Tarja was nice, but way too over-the-top.
I love how over the top Tarja was. I couldn't take any of the music seriously, but Century Child was a damn fun listen.
  • I personally loved Tarja during her time on Nightwish, she set Nightwish apart from the rest of the symphonic metal scene.
Annette has a good voice, but I don't like her stage antics. At least they are letting Marco sing more.
  • I'm probably the last person to discover this, but it's worth posting anyway.
  • I like their cover of Wishmaster.

  • New Korpiklaani album comes out June 26th. Start drinking now in preparation.

  • New Darkest Hour album comes out today.
  • You know, Pete, I'm not really that big on metal (most of it just seems way full of the essence of ouch), but I'm really digging Korpiklaani. Can you recommend more folky-celtic-pagan-metal, big vikings singing about drinking and trolls and stuff like that?
  • That site totally excludes stoner metal and drone metal, my favorite kinds!
Right now on the main page of the site they have a Sunn o))) interview...

Finntroll, Turisas, Oakenshield, and Ensiferum spring to mind immediately. However, those bands are all far more metal than Korpiklaani. The members of Korpiklaani started off as a Finnish folk band called Shaman, and they gradually added more metal to get to their present sound. They're probably the folkiest of the folk metal bands that I know.
  • Do any of you guys have a physical copy of Diadem of 12 Stars by Wolves in the Throne Room? I've been looking for the lyrics to it, and can only find those of the last track. I'm hoping the liner notes have lyrics. The female vocals on Face in a Night Time Mirror Part 1 are incredible.

That video is awesome in pretty much every way. Now I'm hooked on that band.
  • So I've been poking around looking for more folky folk metal bands for Emily. It still seems like Korpiklaani is the closest to actual folk music.

    However, I found this:

And with that, I have a new favorite band ever.

    Finntroll
I do like Finntroll. We saw them live, which was awesome!
    Thanks Pete!

Also: Your Metal panel at Connecticon has a very funny description in the con book. Sample sentence: "Come throw up the horns with Viking Pete and partake in an erudite and cultured discussion about the societal ramifications of rocking out." It was late, we were tired. I can almost guarantee you, though, that you will laugh when you read the whole thing.

I would change it to "the societal ramifications of headbanging and circle pits," but that's just me.

EDIT: If you actually like Finntroll, then you might like pretty much every band I recommended. The hard part with folk metal is figuring out the ratio of folk:metal that a person can enjoy. Bands like Melechesh and Helheim certainly have folk elements, but they're both primarily black metal. I'll throw some more stuff out there when I get home.

WhaleShark, DyingSkye, can either of you recommend an Ulver record?

From what I understand, they've experimented with many different styles, so I'm inclined to think that their albums will vary wildly.

I don't really listen to them myself.
  • What type of music do you regularly listen to? Maybe I can base an album recommendation on that.

Well, the thing is I've been really into black metal, like Wolves in the Throne Room and Krallice, lately, but I also really like ambient electronic music. I listened to a track off their most recent record, and it was all Stars of the Lid with vocals, which I dig but isn't really what I was looking for. Last.fm doesn't have tracks off their early-to-mid records, which I assume are the most metal. So, something with a balance between the style I assume they used to play in, and what they do now.

Have you tried Vried? Some of their songs have a interesting mix of ambient electronic music and black metal.

    Whisper me an album.

I'll leave it public for anyone else that maybe be interested, but whisper if you want to discuss further. Overall, they're just and average band, but they have some pretty cool tracks here and there. Wiki

Kraft, Pitch Black Brigade, I Krig, and apparently just came out with a new one, Milorg.

The specific songs I am thinking of are "Songen Åt Fangen", and "Hengebjørki" (the more ambient track).
  • Not really my steez, sorry.
  • No problem, my taste for metal in general has decreased a lot over the past year so I feel the same way.

  • I been playing this song on guitar lately, it's a fun song.
  • It is quite a fun song, although the solo can be a bitch with the weird sweeps. I also like the tuning used.

  • New album July 24th. Nothing more needs to be said.
  • I love that music video. The chubby guy in his sailor suit is hilarious (not to mention adorable)!
