If you like that style of music, by the way, you should check out Korpiklaani. It's extremely folky, and more palatable than similar bands like Finntroll and Oakenshield.
They write songs, generally speaking, about beer and nature. You really can't go wrong.
I'm listening to it right now. The first track, "Oblivion," didn't really do it for me.
"Divinations" is aggressive and epic, though. I'm digging that one.
"Quintessence:" Opening was very interesting and atmospheric. Morphed into this weird song structure that resolved into awesome. Complex and interesting. Might be trying to do too much with it, though.
So far, my impression of the album is that it's a bit more ambitious in terms of complexity, but I think they might be overreaching. Some parts of it just reek of effort.
I still need a relisten, but I listened to it once when it leaked and was a bit disappointed. It's not bad, it's just not what I was expecting from them.

It's definitely very different than what they've done before. It's a little more prog oriented, I think. A touch slower, but less in-your-face and more complicated. It sounds like they got a hot injection of Dream Theater, a little.
EDIT: "The Czar" is my favorite song so far. It's so...different. It's not typical Mastodon. More prog-rock. In fact, very prog rock. It's a bit trippy.
EDIT 2: They're sounding like a harsher version of King Crimson. That's the vibe I'm getting from this album.
EDIT 3: I officially like it. It's very exploratory. They're going to a lot of different places, but it sounds very cohesive. It's very prog and very ambitious. It also has a very "large" feel. I highly recommend this album to everyone. Give it a good listen and let it take you wherever it goes.
EDIT 4: "The Last Baron" is the best track on the album. Very emotional climax. Excellent stuff.
So I just noticed that Metallica's got a Death Magnetic concert in November about 1 hr away from RIT (in Buffalo). I don't want to go alone. Anyone interested?

Crocell - Behind the Veil Relatively straightforward death metal. A touch of groove and a touch of melody, but otherwise, it's pretty much death metal. You don't hear that too much these days.

Krishna- Thanks for posting that stuff about Earth. I started listening to them and I'm really liking it. I've been listening to stoner/doom/sludge metal (not necessarily drone) ala Electric Wizard for the past few months. I've also been listening to some Bongzilla, Acid King, and Boris lately. I really love it all. I like how it's good metal, doesn't have to be LOL BLAZING FAST, or have ridiculous screaming/grunting vocals.
@Sail- I love that dude's bass. I assume you've seen it? It's pretty ridiculous, but you can get some pretty badass sounds out of it. I could never handle that though. 6-string bass is the limit for me. Cool song, by the way.
There's a musician, Phil Elverum, that I think a lot of the regular posters in this thread will appreciate. He is a total metalhead, in particular a huge Barzum fan. He made an album under the moniker of Mount Eerie in 2008 called Lost Wisdom, which takes it's name from a Barzum track and has an illustrated cover depicting the house from the Barzum EP Aske. Also in 2008, Elverum released an EP called Black Wooden Ceiling Opening, which he describes as "black metal using natural materials." Now, up front, this is not black metal, and it's even a stretch to call it metal at all, but the influences are there and obvious. He juxtaposes his soft voice and acoustic guitar with dissonant-as-fuck guitars and blunt, thunderous drumming. I recommend that you guys check that EP out, and if you like it I can point you in the right direction as far as getting more good records from his huge catalog of releases.

The Finns make some quality music, let me tell you.

I think I pretty much have to go.

Here is a sample song, In Moonlight.
My first impression is "They Might Be Giants meets Electric Wizard".
I jizzed, repeatedly.
EDIT: I jizzed my pant in some parts...But some are just like "WTF?"
Holy shit. It's melodic, epic, and aggressive. Really really aggressive.
Mysteriously, my car seemed to be traveling quite a bit faster than normal today while the album was playing. Strange.
EDIT: Here. Listen to this song.
I highly recommend playing it way too loud.
