Jeez guys, relax. It's obvious that crunk-core is derived from a particular genre closely associated with metal (screamo), so it's perfectly valid to discuss it in the metal thread. Hardcore punk also has a place in a metal thread, since so many bands have taken a lot of their influences from that genre, and many sub-genres are just varying combinations of hardcore punk and metal.
Saying that a new direction in music is somehow "bad" is simply pretentious. You can never fault an artist for trying to do something new and push things in a new direction. In order to get the genres you like, you have to accept that bands like brokeNCYDE will exist. Some people will enjoy that, and it's entirely their prerogative. Can you mock them mercilessly for listening to crunk combined with screamo? Of course, but don't go around saying that it's a "bad" thing. It makes you sound like a pretentious twat.
Here, have some Manowar. Remember that, at its core, THIS is the genre we're talking about. You can't be too pretentious about it, and that's the point.
EDIT: You can stream the new Amorphis album on their Myspace until the 27th. If you don't know who Amorphis is, check them out.
Sorry. If you can hold your head up high, raise your fist up in the air, and play it louder than hell, then it belongs in the metal thread.
So Jonas Brothers and Fall Out Boy belong in the metal thread? Really now, they both meet all the criteria you just mentioned.
Well, the fourth part of the test is "choreograph a brutal axe murder to it." However, most of us don't have the necessary film making resources to do so.
A while back, Not Not Fun, my favorite drone label, put out this split 10" from Sasqrotch and Goliath Bird Eater. One ten minute track from each band, sounds a little like Electric Wizard sans vocals or maybe like Earth 2 if it had drumming. It's pretty fantastic, if you guys are interested. An excerpt from the description on the NNF site: [Goliath Bird Eater] slow-rides a one-note rock monolith into the void before post office local (and Wilco wild card) Nels Cline steps in to wail an absurdly eyeball-shredding guitar solo that crescendos the song into a black light hurricane of repetitious death. Kill me now please. ... Highland Park’s Sasqrotch cruise in a scummier mindset, rolling together depraved sax attacks, freakish costumes, and even the occasional bouzouki curveball intro into their mythically hirsute spliff before torching it in a blaze of drums and drop-tuned oblivion.
Tell me that doesn't sound like the most bitchin thing you've ever heard.
I have not gotten around to it, listening to Xerath at the moment, they are a great cross between Meshuggah and Dimmu Borgir.
Ooh, sounds awesome, I may need to check that out.
EDIT: Damn, it is pretty sweet. I may decide to buy the album sometime. I like how they do the Meshuggah off-time rhythm beats and have the symphony in the background.
Talking about the newest Iced Earth offering in the Bad Music thread reminded me that I really used to be into power metal. Like, wayyyyyyy into power metal. I've actually forgotten how awesome it can be, despite also being one of the cheesiest forms of music there is.
Have some fucking Gamma Ray:
And a little Symphony X (OK, they're neoclassical/progressive, but this is a very power song):
And of course, Blind Guardian; this is the full concert scene from Sacred 2, featuring an original song recorded solely for the game:
I just found this on Youtube. It's "Handful of Rain" by Savatage, easily one of my favorite Savatage songs ever. I had no idea they had an official music video to go along with it. Enjoy.
I've listened to almost all of Ki, the new Devin Townsend album. It's a radical departure from his usual stuff. It's very subtle, restrained, and actually mellow. There's definitely a seething undercurrent to it (hence "restrained"), and it does bleed out on maybe 3 tracks, but unlike his other work, he lets it out a little and then reels it back in. He never really lets loose; instead, the entire album is kept under tight control.
It's also very, very good. I highly recommend it; just prepare yourselves for something different.
I hope that Devin Townsend does more absolutely hilarious stuff likeZiltoid the Omniscientin the future.
The next 3 albums he's releasing are all going to be pretty serious. I like his campy stuff, but I also really enjoy it when he takes it seriously. The man's quite talented.
Check out the song "Vampira" on Youtube. It may be the greatest music video made by man.

I understand that he is an immensely talented man, it's just nice to see someone in music set out to make something that doesn't take itself seriously, especially when it's coming out of the metal genre. I also love the fact that the album tells a story, I love it when musicians try to do this.
Pilgrimage by Om is the best metal record I think I have ever heard. It's all bass, drums, and vocals, from the drummer and bassist of Sleep. Each track settles into a repeating groove throughout, but they're all so full of momentum and keep pushing forward with all of this energy that I could never really call it drone, but it's something close, like the stoneriest stoner metal in the world. The vocals are half-whispered, half-chanted, and the drumming ranges from African sounding tom grooves to slow, sludgy beats in the same vein as Sleep. Y'all need to download this album, right away.
Sail, you know how much I love to make ridiculous claims about any music that strikes my fancy that day. Right now, I really feel like that is true. In a couple weeks, probably not.
As a budding metalhead, I'm finding About.com's Heavy Metal section, which encompasses all subgenres of metal, to be very helpful. It's helping me avoid the metal I categorize as "bad" (the kind with growly, raspy, or otherwise unintelligible vocals, like death or gothic) and more of the metal I prefer, like power metal and thrash metal. More experienced metalheads like TheWhaleShark could probably write the entire section by themselves, but others may find it useful.
Edit - fixed a double negative to be a single negative (not unintelligible).

I been listening to this band lately.

For a second I thought you were talking about this.
This song has become an inside joke within my circle of friends.
