That's retarded. Why put something in your music that isn't supposed to be likable?
Well, I guess I shouldn't say it's not likable. The vocal style is there to create a specific sound and solidify the mood of the song.
When it comes to black and death metal, the idea is that you have to want to like it. They make the music intentionally isolationist, in order to attract the people who like to explore their music.
It's similar to the meta-idea in noise music. It sounds cacophonous, but if you're willing to explore it, you find interesting things there.
I'm still nabbing that album, because it's fucking awesome, the vocals just struck me a little funny. I'll admit I've never explored black metal, so I'm sure it's just something I'll get used to like everything else.
Though, I've never been able to get into straight "death metal". I listen to prog-death and melo-death, but Cannibal Corpse is just alienating to me, no matter how much I want to like them.

Cannibal Corpse is really more of a novelty band. There are other gore-oriented bands like them, and the whole point of the genre is to be over-the-top in terms of grotesqueness. They're intentionally trying to sound bad.
Nile and Suffocation are good death metal bands. Check out Crocell too.
Crocell only has one album and they released it very recently. It's title The God We Drowned.
As far as Suffocation goes, pretty much anything by them will be solid, but their debut album, Effigy of the Forgotten, is one of the most influential death metal albums ever.
I'd also look into melodic and symphonic black metal, as it might be more initially palatable. Even mainstream stuff like Dimmu Borgir can give you an idea of what's there.
You should also check out Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise and IX Equilibrium, both by Emperor. Prometheus is more like extreme symphonic/progressive metal, but it's got a black tinge. IX is more like black metal with progressive and symphonic elements. Both of those might make the meta-ideas of black metal a little easier to digest.
The big thing in black and death metal is that you have to "get" it. Once you do, you'll love it. If you don't "get" it, you'll never enjoy it.
Monoliths and Dimensions, the new Sunn O))) record, has leaked. I usually prefer very lo-fi Sunn, my favorite album of theirs being The Grimmrobe Demos, but this release is so filled out and crammed with pure black force, what with the double bass trio, horns, and Sunn's signature low-end magic, that it matches the sonic force of that first release.
I like Electric Wizard. I just started using Pandora again after seeing TheWhaleShark's L4D video, and I've been listening to more Electric Wizard and Sun O))). Ah, sweet, sweet, music.
I got Electric Wizard's discography a month or so ago. I really only like it when the guy sings/screms/whatever like he does in Dopethrone. Only one or two other albums do that (and right now I honestly can't remember which ones), but the rest are kinda so-so in comparison.
I feel bad for posting this, but I think it is a sign of things to come. If you have not seen them yet, let me introduce you to the worst band in the world at the moment ... brokeNCYDE. If this "scene" takes off, it will be bad for us all. As Warren Ellis said "If you meet someone who likes this? Even if they profess to like it in an "ironic," knowing, media-aware kind of way? Then theyÂ’re a turd with a haircut."
[Edit] And I'm not even sure what "scene" you're talking about. Besides, electronic music with screams hassomepotential.
More than some. Look at pretty much all of the voice-sampled breakbeats Venetian Snares has put together, or "Come to Daddy" by Aphex Twin.
Why will it be bad for all of us?
Seriously. A lot of teenage girls love the Jonas Brothers, and I have yet to see the downfall of music as we know it, and they were already a part of an established "scene," arguably the MOST established: pop.
Devin Townsend's new album Ki is being released tomorrow in Europe, but it's already on the tubes. I'm listening to it right now.
It's pretty mellow so far, but Devin has said that's his plan.
EDIT:
Could you recommend a good Burzum record, WhaleShark?
Something that may interest you: Varg Vikernes was released from prison yesterday. Perhaps he'll put out a new Burzum record soon. That is, if he's not busy murdering somebody instead of writing music.
Why the fuck are you posting that in the metal thread?
Because you can tell that some people are going to(and some already do) consider this noise to be rock, when it's not.
And I'm not even sure what "scene" you're talking about.
In regards to the scene, I believe it is called crunk-core or spunk-core. From what I can tell, it's emoy scene kids doing a pretty fly for the white guy style rap that sounds like Akon with screaming in the background. If it's supposed to be based in rap, fine, but they can't rap. The beats are not any good and the samples just loop repetitively. Maybe the video that I posted wasn't the best example of it: [I am sorry for posting this] When the emo scene started there were still some good bands, but this style doesn't have any redeeming qualities. Music is taken seriously by alot of people which is why I just find this offensive.
In other news, if you haven't heard of Gallows you should check them out: Grey Britain is a brilliant album. Also Steel Panther are hilarious, like Spinal Tap for LA hard rock:
You're still not telling me why people liking this or calling it rock will be "bad for us all".
I'm not saying that it's going to be the end of the world. Just that I think it's embarrassing when people start to associate others who they know like a genre of music (eg. rock or metal) with this "crunk-core" business. It was the same with the emo scene. "Bad for us all" was an over statement I agree, but I still don't think it will do any good, especially when this takes off and we start to see more and more of this rubbish.

Excuse me? Judging from the two bands you thought were metal, I think the only one who could possibly construe crunk-core to be traditional "rock n' roll" is you. Besides, the influences are obvious. It sounds exactly like how I'd think an attempt at combining hardcore punk and generic crunk rap would sound like. And I have no idea what you're saying with the emo comment. I hope you're not meaning to imply that, in your little world, emo is comparable to crunk-core in that it should not be associated with rock, which would be bullshit since emo was just an offshoot of punk.
Bottom line, your argument sounds rooted in pretention and you should stop being offended by music you don't like.
Now you're just being picky. I don't remember saying that they were examples of metal bands. I just thought that since those genre's of music were closely associated with metal that people might enjoy them. I was not aware of any Hardcore-Punk or Rock 'n' Roll/Hard-Rock Parody threads, but if there are please point me to them and I will post the appropriate videos there.

I do know that Varg has released some more dark ambient oriented material from prison. I've been thinking about checking it out.
LaBrie with a trench coat=kick ass.
New video.
I like the video.

Also, Gallows is hardcore punk and, judging from that one song, Steel Panther aren't even remotely heavy metal. You confuse me.
