Is it worth ~6 hours each way and ~$90 total costs (including hotel/gas/ticket) to see Amon Amarth live in Philly? They just announced their American "An Evening with Amon Amarth" tour in which they will perform the new album Surtur Rising in its entirety, followed by a second set of material from previous albums.

Why not go to the Cleveland show? That would only be a 4 hour trip from Rochester.
I'm enjoying MÃ¥negarm lately. Very folky. They call themselves a "viking metal" band, and the original core idea was to play "as fast and primitive metal as possible, and the lyrics had to be in Swedish. "
So I bought a Borean Dusk t-shirt. Well, it arrived in the mail today. Attached to it was a hand-written Post-it from one of the band members: "Thanks Peter! Cheers, Gunnar/B.D."
Agalloch seems quite good. Like The Body, I found this song on an NPR list of "metal and outersound" from 2010. Thank you guy on NPR for having weird taste in metal.
Isn't it mostly nerds who are into metal now though? I think the era of metal being tough is over.
Nerds were always the only ones who were into metal. Manowar is among the nerdiest of nerd bands. Metallica wrote a song about Cthulhu. Amon Amarth took their name from Tolkien - from the Elvish word for "Mount Doom." Metal guitarists are really guitar nerds. Let's not even talk about metal drummers.
A Viking death metal band took its name from a fictional language from the nerd bible.
I do a lecture about this. Metal is nerd music. It's always been nerd music. The "tough" aspects of metal are part of the up-front and challenging nature of the music; it serves to select the audience.
Yeah we all know Pantera fans were/are a bunch of really sensitive bookworm types.
But see, they are, and that's the beauty of it. I know a guy who looks every bit like the stereotypical Pantera fan. He also was recently a Baron in the SCA. Doesn't get much nerdier than that.
Well, OK, maybe not all Pantera fans, but the largest segment certainly are.
Let's not forget that Dimebag was the guitarist originally considered by Mike Portnoy for Liquid Tension Experiment. LTE is nerd-wank music if anything could be called that.

Here's another new Amon Amarth song for you, inspired by Dio - Holy Diver.
I feel so fucking underground right now.
Awesome Israeli black metal.

I mean, Blind Guardian. I win.
