So I'm headed for another big rotation change. Here's what I'm grabbing so far:

    Helheim - Asgards Fall
Weapon - From the Devil's Tomb
    Harmful - Cause
    Zoroaster - Matador
    Atheist - Jupiter
    Cough - Ritual Abuse
Diesto - High as the Sun
Star One - Victims of the Modern Age
Sargeist - Let the Devil In
Black Sun - Twilight of the Gods
    Martolea - Noaptea Dihaniilor
God Dethroned - Under the Sign of the Iron Cross
    Borean Dusk - Borean Dusk
    Dawnbringer - Nucleus
    Triptykon - Shatter
    Melechesh - The Epigenesis
Obscure Infinity - The Dawn of Winter
Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm
Triosphere - The Road Less Traveled
Kamelot - Poetry for the Poisoned

If you couldn't guess, this also serves as my "to-do" list. :P

Well, I haven't heard it yet, so no bro grabs just yet. I used to like Atheist, but I'm really falling out of love with tech death. Every now and then the mood strikes me, but I'm really moving in that moody (but still aggressive) post-black/sludge/drone/noise/doom direction.
  • Oh yeah. If you're not listening to Agalloch's latest, Marrow of the Spirit, you're wrong. Fix that problem right now.

Has anyone ever listened to the Disfear album Live the Storm?

Best metal album I've heard in a long time. As a guitar player I typically like 'widdily widdily widdily" which this album doesn't have much of but.. my gawd is it an amazing album. Just listen to "In Exodus."

Also: I tend to like classic metal (Sabbath and such) or something like Live the Storm. I don't really like 'singing' in newer heavier metal. It tends to sound too emo-choir boy if that makes any sense. So many people have that breathy fake-angsty Britney Spears influenced singing style that started around a decade ago.

  • This likely wouldn't be considered metal, but whatever the hell it is, I can't stop listening to it.
Sounds pretty metal to me, though I have never heard vocals like that in metal before. This is also FUCKING AWESOME. Discography GET.
  • So the new Atheist is pretty cool. Very tech without being too pretentious.

However, I have a better recommendation:

This is a band called Inquisition. You should listen to them. They're sort of really fucking awesome.
  • Here's a handy guide for those confused about Scandinavian metal.

  • Hey Pete, you ever see Until The Light Takes Us? It's a pretty damn fine black metal doc.
  • I want Finland's hat.

I've not. I like that title, though. I'll put that on The List.
  • I have a new Christmas tradition: On the full moon of December or, if the weather does not permit, the fullest moon possible, I will go for a walk in the woods at midnight while listening to Sunn O))).

Damn I wish I had some woods nearby right about now.

e: Although walking around my neighborhood at night would probably be just as scary.

Moonlit woods have the benefit of being really surreal looking, especially if there's a creek,

  • I'm in love with instrumental metal.

You should check out Scale the Summit. Saw them a couple of years ago with Dream Theater, Bigelf, and Zappa Plays Zappa. Excellent stuff.

Will do. Animals as Leaders is another excellent example.
  • New Korpiklaani single from their Ukon Wacka album is out and it's totally awesome. It's kind of hard to find, unfortunately.
  • I'm going to post some quick thoughts about some of the albums I mentioned previously.
    Helheim -Asgards Fall
Very cool and folkly. A little on the bleak and grim side. Nice interludes. Helheim continues to impress me.
    Zoroaster -Matador
Not terribly "metal," but pretty cool overall. Some nice stoner hard rock.
    Atheist -Jupiter
Like I said before, nicely technical without being too pretentious. I wouldn't call it amazing, but it is very well-executed.
    Cough -Ritual Abuse
These guys were a total unknown to me, and I dug it a lot. They have a fairly abrasive and aggressive sludgy doomy kind of sound. Very big riffs. This one demands multiple listens; I'll be starting my second listen on it not too far from now.
Star One -Victims of the Modern Age
I'm on the fence about this one. It's some very nice proggy power metal, but the use of synth is a bit much sometimes. There are also times when one part of a song is totally out of place with the rest of the song. The title track is very guilty of that. However, I'd say the album is solid overall. Not ground-breaking, but if you like that progressive Savatage/Queensryche-inspired metal (I'm looking at you, Rym), this is definitely for you.
    Martolea -Noaptea Dihaniilor
This is weird. It's almost instrumental and almost doom and almost folk, but not quite any one of those. The album is free - legally - so you might as well check it out.
God Dethroned -Under the Sign of the Iron Cross
I've always had a soft spot for these guys. This album is not ground-breaking, but if you like good ol' death metal, this album is for you.
    Dawnbringer -Nucleus
This is another strange album. It's in that vein of the classic metal revival that's getting very big, but it's also not quite classic metal. Imagine an updated version of Motorhead, and you're thinking along the right lines. I'd say it's worth checking out. I think I'll give it one more listen before I pass final judgment on it.
Inquisition -Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm
This could be the best album of 2010, and maybe one of the best black metal albums ever. Just get it and listen to it. It's flawless.
    Kamelot -Poetry for the Poisoned
I'm not sure if I've lost my taste for Kamelot or if they've just lost their touch, but this album sucks. I only made it through half the album before I got bored and switched back to Inquisition. Someone who really digs Kamelot should tell me if this is actually a bad album or if I'm just past this sort of music. In any event, this one is not recommended.

Yeah, this not even close to their best, some tracks I like but overall this album is really meh, I'll stick with the Black Halo for my Kamelot fix.
  • Been kind of enjoying the traditional metals lately. Holy Grail's newest album is fantastic.

So far, here's what I've dug the most, starting with "OMFG THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER" at the top:

Inquisition - Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm
Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time
Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
    Ihsahn - After
    Finntroll - Nifelvind
    Triptykon - Eparistera Daimones
Nachtmystium - Addicts: Black Meddle Part II
    Helheim - Asgards Fall
    Deathspell Omega - Paracletus

Agreed. "Zodiac" and "So Long" are the only things on this album I like. The rest is kind of uninspired and same-y, and what in the fuck is up with the voiceovers in "Dear Editor" and "Incubus?" Barf. It seems the band really needs the direction provided by a concept album (like Epica and Black Halo, which are based on Faust.) In my opinion, Ghost Opera didn't live up to their previous stuff either, so to have that followed by an album like Poetry is really disappointing.

HOW THE FUCK DID I FORGET IMMOLATION?

Majesty and Decay is one of the finest death metal records ever released. I'd stick it up there above Agalloch and under Blind Guardian. Phenomenal album.

  • New metal albums I'm looking forward to in 2011:
    Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising
    Korpiklaani - Ukon Wacka
    Nightwish - [TBA]
    Maybe System of a Down?
    Skindred - Union Black
    Alestorm - Back Through Time
Rush - Clockwork Angels (fuck you, Rush is fuckin' metal)
    Diablo Swing Orchestra -[TBA]
    Rammstein - [TBA]
Metallica maybe? Wikipedia basically says they're working on it, but that's all.
  • Opeth-[tba]
    Dream Theater-[tba]
