There people who like Remission more than Leviathan? Also, I didn't love Crack The Skye.

  • Ok, so I absolutely love the speed and technicality of Metal, but for some reason, I can't stand it when the vocals consist of nothing but "growling". Do you guys know of any good FAST metal bands without growly vocals?

    All power metal.

    No, really. All of it.
  • So you know the album art for the Hunter?

    Yeah, that's not 2D art...

    IT'S A GODDAMN SCULPTURE.
  • Oh holy fucking shit that was so awesome it hurts.

    SO ANYHOW:

I'm going to assume a basic familiarity with the essentials: Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer. If you're not familiar with the Big Four, stop everything you're doing and kill yourself. Once you're in Hell, ask Cliff Burton to lay some fat bass lines down for you. In between the tortured screaming of the damned, you'll hear the greatest metal mankind ever produced.

This is, however, a slightly inefficient route. So you could wuss out and just listen to their music.

Now, there are modern-day thrash bands. There's been an old-school thrash revival in the last 4-ish or 5-ish years, so there are lots of newer bands coming out that try to re-do the Bay Area thrash thing. I hate them all, but you might like them. Warbringer is such an example - completely superfluous if you're already into Slayer, but a good choice if you're new blood:

You could also check out Holy Grail, which is somewhat more in the power metal vein while still staying quite thrashy:

I mean, I can do this all day. The quickest way to get to more stuff is to tell us what you like, and we'll give you recommendations based on that. Also, Pandora can help greatly.

Yeah, fucking love those bands, but I was looking for things that weren't quite so well known or "essential". I guess I've also listened to a lot of Raphsody of Fire, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Triosphere, Warmen, Kamelot. Other than that, I mostly listen to instrumental Metal.

I'm mostly looking for the faster side of metal. Power metal hits the spot, but I'm not quite sure which bands to look out for.

I'm not completely impressed by Warbringer, but Holy Grail sounds badass.

  • Born of Osiris' new CD is pretty dense. I really like the song Automatic Motion if anyone is interested in looking it up on YouTube.

I'm gonna be honest, 95% of power metal is virtually identical. Blind Guardian is famous for being the best of the lot. Try Gamma Ray too.

But neither of those are what I would characterize as "fast" power metal; well, OK, early Blind Guardian was fast, but they've slowed down a bit recently.

Speed metal exists as a subgenre; it consists almost exclusively of bands like Dragonforce, who emphasize speed over almost everything else. I don't like most speed metal bands and, for the record, I don't like Dragonforce.

You might be more interested in neo-classical metal bands, like Symphony X or Stratovarius. This almost all tends to be super fucking cheesy, but if you like Rhapsody of Fire, you're used to cheese. Luca Turilli's solo work is also pretty good, but be forewarned: it's even cheesier than Rhapsody of Fire.

Not for everyone, but I eat up anything these guys fucking write.

    Protest the Hero is phenomenal.

I think this is the first PTH song that I've heard and dug. I remember thinking that the vocals sounded too weak and thin a few years back. This song, though, is showcasing some very strong and well-supported vocals, and superlative musicianship.

Is this album markedly different than the rest of their material? I'm curious.

EDIT: No, wait, I'm thinking of Fall of Troy. PTH appears to have always been fucking awesome. Why aren't I listening to them?

  • Bitch, Fall of Troy is great. But not technically metal.

Rody has always been rock solid on his vocals. Scurrilous, their most recent album, shows him moving away from growls that he occasionally used in previous albums, but fuck that dude can really sing. From my experience some people find his voice "annoying", but dem bitches be crazy yo.

  • Sum 41 should make a metal album.

I think Chuck is the closest they'll ever come to a metal album. That said, it's my favorite of their albums.

I actually might enjoy this. Or not.

  • Oh god. Oh sweet jesus why. WHY.

Cleansing my ears. It's been at least two pages since someone posted Amon Amarth, right?
  • Cleanse your ears with this:

It's the entire Hunter album released officially with the trippiest freaking visualizers ever.

OK, see, why can't the entire record industry do stuff like this? You know what this is right here? The best advertising ever. "Here, listen to the whole damn album. Like it? Buy it, or a t-shirt, or see us live."

Because the Record Companies are afraid that it will negatively affect their profits from the sale of the album. One of my roommates thought that it was stupid that Mastodon was releasing the album on YouTube until I told him that they make so much more money through concerts and merch sales.
  • I actually might enjoy this. Or not.
I will reserve judgment until I can hear more than 30 seconds. That was half "WTF" and half "this ain't bad."

I'd like to hope that the last several seconds of that preview were more representative of the whole album, but I can't help but wonder why they chose THIS 30 seconds.

Here's the whole song. Gotta say, I'm really liking this, guys. Can't imagine that many Metallica fans are gonna like Lou Reed's detuned, swaggering vocals, though. It's also pretty sludgy.

That was...interesting. I'm not sure if I like it or not. It was very...different...than what I usually listen to.

I'm curious enough to check out more of the album.

I dug the solo at the end.

  • This would be a good song if Lou Reed were not "singing" it. Hetfield's bits are good.
  • I like it, not what I would have first imagined, but I'm willing to give the rest of the album a shot.

    Listen 2 moar Transformer

He sounded way better then than he does now.
