If you go into their preferences and set them all to be farmers or fishermen as well as whatever jobs they already do you can get some extra use out of them. Oh, an make sure you never make my mistake of accidentally hitting the button to lock the only door out of the fortress.
Personal Log of "Sail" Lilarkol 1st Granite - I have decided to keep this log so that, long in the future when I'm old and I finally leave this world, someone may find these writings to explain all that I have done. I volunteered in petty selfishness to be in a position of power and now I realize that I am jeopardizing the lives of my fellow dwarves. Thankfully, the past two leaders have been quite strong so I pray that there will be few hitches over the course of the year. But, for the sanity of my people, I must try to appear strong or else this grand fort may be endangered further.
5th Granite - Only days into the job and there has been a mishap. I was several floors up giving the orders for one of the tasks my former has left me -- cutting down trees for wood -- and returned to find a flood of miasma in the stockpile room. The corpse hauling dwarves must have been sleeping on the job. Several dwarves decided to wander in and, unfortunately, there's not much I can do now. What a way to start a term...
17th Granite - A kobold ended up in our stock room. I didn't mobilize the troops quick enough and it got away. I fear that the dwarves have begun to notice my incompetence.
27th Granite - I've started a huge mining site on the lowest level. Hopefully a move like this will restore me some respect. I'll find that magma if it's the last thing I do!
27th Slate - The passage is mostly drained and I'm tired of waiting. With the new immigrants we've taken a huge hit in the food department. This farming expansion is desperately needed.
9th Felsite - We've mined out half of the designation I set months ago and still no magma. We have to have some luck soon. Also our supplies are alarmingly low. I've been observing how many dwarves have been lazing around in the Hall of Honor over the past few months and today I decided that it needed to stop. This decision has made me very unpopular around here and occasionally I hear them whispering about me. But it's for their own good. They should realize how close they are to a major crisis...
Nineless mutters. Finally I am confident enough in my failing that I am considering joining. Problem is that we're moving the 10th and then we'll have to wait till we get internet again.
Also, neat Sail, looks good. Now lets hope the mountain will stand on the outer edges of the map.
I'm watching chaos unfold as I speak and I'll have all the highly entertaining details in my post, but I just wanted to give you guys the heads up that the fort may not survive this turn. It's absolutely ridiculous how much shit is going on right now. It's happening faster than I can take screen caps.
[Edit] Right now I'm just waiting out my turn. The fort has fallen completely out of my control though seemingly through no fault of my own. Complete coverage later on, but needless to say that the next player will be starting a whole new fort and losing is indeed fun.
Oh man... awesome. Does the chaos involve (spoilers) deemonz? If so, it's grounds for a re-do on your part, or the next player can choose to ignore your turn. But if it's just general dwarfish insanity and bad luck, there's always a chance to struggle on. It essentially comes down to this: can the next player take over from you at all?
(continued) 10th Malachite - Food levels are getting really low. I've marked most of our strays for slaughter. The thought of killing those puppies disgusts me, but it must be done.
13th Limestone - Our fort was attacked in a lot of different ways today. Firstly, a kobold stole from out stores. This time I was quick to command the troops but they were nowhere to be found and it got away. Only moments later three goblins broke in and snatched two babies. I'm disgusted just thinking about it, those poor children. It's a disgrace. Well, no more. After today, building a strong military has become top priority. This musn't happen again.
21st Limestone - The dwarven caravan has arrived. I'm so relieved. We traded for enough food stocks that we will easily be able to survive the winter.
27th Limestone - A fellow went crazy today. He was just running around yelling and not hurting anyone so we just let him be. Also 3/4ths of my original mining job has been completed and still no luck for magma. The search is beginning to frustrate me.
5th Timber - The former leader who went crazy and stopped eating and drinking died today. Never did like the fellow, myself. Always acted like an abrasive bastard.
(continued) 10th Timber - There is absolute pandemonium in the fort right now. Earlier today a dwarf went crazy and killed two others. The war dogs were able to take him down, but his death caused all his friends and family to throw tantrums and stop working. Then three other dwarves went insane too and started killing people. The dogs were able to take them down with a few casualties of their own, but this caused over half the dwarves to throw tantrums and stop working. I have no control now. If I issue an order to a level-headed dwarf he either gets attacked or goes insane/throws a tantrum himself. There is nothing I can do except watch and hope that they calm down...
18th Moonstone - I've given up all hope. The fort is collapsing.
1st Opal - The chaos still refuses to slow. It's terrible. Miasma breaks out every few minutes and brothers are destroying brothers left and right. I can't take it any more. I will end my life. All I can do now is leave you with the state of the fort in it's final days...
*phew* So, what do you guys want to do? Start a new fort, start back at the beginning of year 3, what? Personally, regardless of what we choose to do, I'd prefer if the next person in the rotation goes instead of me trying again.
Please upload the world to the server. Even if people make a new fortress yours will still be there if someone goes back to it. (If you remember the exact area you started in can you go back with more dwarfs later?)
Ok Sail, get a normal load out of dwarfs (the ones from the "your first fortress tutorial") and deploy them in the area of the old fortress, then save it and upload. Sail, did you build a jail and set a sheriff? That might have stopped your attack dogs needing to kill them.

I think thane did the setup with the quick expansion set of dwarves. I don't know if someone else will be able to find the starting spot on the map.
Also, it seems like the dwarves went crazy due to lack of drink. Trading for food won't help if there is no alcohols. Once we get a farm working, we should have a designated brewer.

Not necessary, am_dragon can do that, it's part of his turn. All we need is the save folder as it is now, non-reclaimed.
Don't worry about it, Sail. It was pretty funny. I'm just looking forward to being the frontrunner in a new fortress and seeing what kinds of things you guys will do after me. I just want to make my mark on the fortress.
Wow... I love how this game just go to hell on you. I'm going to do my best, I doubt I'm any better than Sail. That's what makes it fun though. It's like when you first start playing Scorched Earth or Worms, "Cool, what's this do?, Oh Shit".

Actually, there never really was an alcohol problem. I think it might have been partially related to the fact that I took away their meeting hall. I probably should have returned it after a few weeks.
Anyway, I sent the save off to Scott. If the next fort is more prosperous, this one is gonna be pretty fun to explore.
I'm gearing up for my turn in my own world right now, and I had two dwarfs die early, one within 5 minutes from falling down a chasm, and the other within an hour, from thirst, because apparently I didn't understand how ramps work compared to stairs. I lasted for over five years on my first "real" fortress, and even then I just gave up, wanting to try a new area with the experience under my belt.
Okay, add me, I think I have enough skillz to handle the sussesion game.
Done. I've also updated the first post with links to the maps and saves, for easy reference.
The latest map has been uploaded to the DF Map Archive. I had to fake a reclaim attempt to get the map, so ignore the dwarves hovering around the start area. But what I learned while getting the map may be quite valuable to am_dragon's attempt to sort the place out. Here are my thoughts:
1st - The anvil and all of the tools are still around (somewhere), so no need to bring more. 2nd - Because there's no need to bring another anvil, spend up big on booze and food. I'm talking hundreds of barrels of alcohol and hundreds of units of cheap meats. 3rd - You'll spend a lot of time just cleaning up the place. Disposing of bodies should be your #1 priority, as misama will run rampant if it isn't. Don't bother with coffins, just designate a large outside graveyard area for dead dwarves and a large refuse area for dead animals. 4th - All of the items previously in the fort have been scattered around the whole map. You'll have to unforbid them for your dwarves to collect them. Have fun cleaning all of that up.

Farewell,

The last dwarf
RECLAIM THE FORTRESS!
Sail, did you build a jail and set a sheriff? That might have stopped your attack dogs needing to kill them.

Also, "Water has died from thirst." Hehehe...
Well, I agree. We must try to reclaim the fortress! I can't believe I was the first to die though...
Anyway, I sent the save off to Scott. If the next fort is more prosperous, this one is gonna be pretty fun to explore.
Hopefully you people have figured out how these URLs work, and I will be able to stop posting the links.
