Has anyone played about with the video capture options yet? It would be cool to see these epic events unfold.
No, it would be long and boring unless the video was heavily edited.
In other news, I'm playing my own game of Dwarf Fortress to improve my skills. For the first time ever I have a functioning metalsmith's forge, and I just struck platinum. It's time to make coins!
I meant using the recording options you get when you hit ";" on the main menu. You could use it to record just the highlights. I'm not going to be playing for a while. Recording in Linux now magically works again so I'm going to get on with getting more podcast material done.
I've noticed that you're digging large open areas underground to try and find things, I am a bit more dungeon keeper like and just have lots of long corridors going out to try and find stuff and lots of additional downwards stairways from the surface to get a feel of the land at several levels in different places.

Yeah, I also dig lots of narrow corridors to find things. That's how I found the platinum. I was digging long narrow corridors on the lowest level, and I found a chasm. Thanks to that, I was able to see the platinum many floors up. Now my dwarves are mining on the edge of the chasm. Here's hoping nobody falls in. However, now I've got a convenient garbage dump.

Be careful, chasms on the lowest level can let daemons loose.
Don't put small animal traps inside and then prime them with meat. Easy way to cause miasma. Also, is there any way to get metal tools without first buying an anvil? (I hit space while trading last time so I'm going to have to wait another year :-( )

The only way I know to get metal tools is to make them or buy them. To make them, you need an anvil AFAIK. As for hitting space, I always do that during the trading. They really ought to fix that.

Fucks. The chasm goes all the way from the bottom up to above the bedrooms.
Ok, it looks like you only need to be careful about theglowing pits.
From the wiki: The chasm is also home to many types of hostile creatures, including iron men, troglodytes, giant cave swallows, antmen, giant cave spiders, ratmen, and batmen.

Looks like you will finally learn to use your military then.
I'm looking through the wiki and finding all sorts of good stuff:
What to do with all those stones. Spike/Spear traps are apparently awesome, linking a hall of them to a lever and setting a dwarf to repeatedly turn the lever on and off will kill just about anything. [Adding as I go..]
I don't think you can make platinum coins... And there's no use for them yet afaik.
You can most definitely make platinum coins. If for nothing else, I can use them to trade for useful things. If that fails, I can make platinum furniture.

FYI - I am playing my turn. I'm going out of town tomorrow and I won't be back until Monday. You may get the next chapter in this story in one big post. The only hard part is playing without the wiki so I've got to study up tonight.

It is hard for me to play without the wiki. I often play on the train, where there is no net connection. Also, I like to play on my laptop, but with full screen, so I can't use a web browser then either. One good thing I have noticed, though, is that once I check the wiki for something, I remember it. I haven't had to look up anything twice yet.
EDIT: Oh, Thane, have you seen the artifacts on the reclaimed map?
Nope. No artifact toy axes to be found. Damn.
...I can make platinum furniture.
You heard right.
Masterful platinum statues are the most valuable mundane furniture items in the game (12000 monies). A few of those can turn even the most humble home into a residence worthy of a king.

Bah. Back in my day, we didn't have a wiki to help us. We had to learn it somehow without much help. But for some reason, I never really struggled to understand how to play. And by the time I discovered the wiki, it was good for learning some advanced strategies for the 2D version of the game, like elephant trapping, and lava flooding the outside world. Damn, those were good times. You could do so much with an unlimited flow of lava. Lava flowed like a river, people! Think about it!

I've recently started a new game inside a volcano. Magma is indeed abundant.
Oh, but you don't know the joys of magma unless you've played a game in version 0.23 or lower. Abundant magma is one thing - unlimited magma is a tool that turns dwarves into gods.

The wiki article on reclaiming should be helpful, am_dragon.

You heard right.
Definitely something for the king's quarters.
I have not modded the game besides the graphics.
WTF?
