Not usually. Most of the time, you seem to get it. Or at least, you humor me, which is near enough. Far as I'm concerned, just chalking this one up to a missed cue, it happens to all of us. You're not the first here, won't be the last.
    I'll be the last..

  • Boy those Dresden Files books sure are words on paper.....
  • Fail of my day - having to explain to someone that no, it's not considered racist to be patriotic, but saying things like "Go home ya fuckin' currymunchers" is not patriotism, it's just being a racist.

It's because of a study that shows people who fly flags on their cars in Australia are more likely to be somewhat racist, as opposed to people who don't. So, a bunch of bogans and morons are screaming about "Oh, so it's racist to fly the flag now, is it?" and usually following it up with a comment about how we "Don't want to offend the fuckin' (ethnic slur)s"

Sounds like an interesting study, with an unexpected result that confirms the findings.

We had the same thing with the Confederate flag around here. The fury died down.

It'll die down here, too. I suspect the findings have come to light because it's so close to Australia day - a day when a LOT of people will be flying flags from their cars.

It's also not that great of a study - it's based on a small sample size(513 people), in a single area, in Perth(one of the more isolated cities in the country, and one with one of the lowest populations of migrants, most of whom settle on the East coast, not the West coast), at the fireworks for Australia day, with no information about how participants were selected.

I'd wager the results would be much different, if they were conducted on a much larger scale, over a longer time, and in different cities(or, preferably, across many different cities.)
  • Also, what constitutes as "more racist"?

Pardon? I'm not sure what you're getting at.

There is a lot of behavior that can be construed as racist, but is not. A lot of these cases could be xenophobia, rather then straight up racism. This seems especially logical since they're likely more patriotic.

Ah, that makes sense. Yes, in many cases, I'd agree, but the two are somewhat complimentary, and certainly don't rule each other out. I can imagine it would be quite difficult to distinguish between the two, in many cases, and often where one is present, you'll find the other.

That said, I'd say in a lot of cases they're looking at in this (admittedly poor) study, and in the news articles surrounding it, it is more Xenophobia rather than outright racism that motivates the words and actions of these people - for example, one of the primary concerns of the flag-displaying group in this study was that the "Australian way of life" is under threat by foreigners, which would more fall under xenophobia than racism.

I really hate whenever says "the [something] way of life is under threat." Even if a country is all isolationist, stuff changes in the culture and lifestyle all the time, affected by science, trends, politics, you name it. No culture is static. Conservatism re: Culture is one of the most stupid and impossible social philosophies one could have.

Agreed. To be honest, a lot of these people are undereducated idiots, who forget history - a somewhat impressive feat, considering we only have about a hundred years of it, as the nation of Australia. We were founded by convicts and built by poor-as-shit immigrants, and yet these people complain about legal immigrants coming in and trying to contribute to the country?

The whole situation is just ludicrous, really. The ludicrous wailing and gnashing of teeth by change-adverse rednecks and fools who forget the proud history, ideals and culture of the very nation they so frequently proclaim their love for. They scream about the fictional moving away from something that didn't exist in the first place. People complaining about the very same thing that their families were, in a time that isn't even out of living memory.

America has similar history and similar forgetful idiots.

Interesting. I've heard that Australia has incredibly tough immigration laws too, meaning I'd have to do drastic things to move there.

If true, what are they complaining about? Wanting to force people to move out rather than making it hard for people to move in?

Maybe you would, I don't know your situation. They're not that bad, though, and the system is pretty good at getting people who meet the requirements though. I'd actually call the American system tougher and less efficient in most regards, to be honest. And it's easier for certain nations, particularly Commonwealth nations(and among them, particularly Canada and the UK), Ireland, and the USA.

Bit of column A, bit of Column B, really. They want to make it harder for people to move here, usually they want to "Stop the boats" - usually imagining a vast fleet of illegal immigrant boats just over the horizon at all times, just waiting to swarm our shores, rather than the slight trickle, and the majority of illegal immigrants coming from western nations via planes and on holiday or working holiday visas - as well as forcing non-white people who don't meet their ludicrous standards to go back to their country of origin. As expected, you don't really get white foreigners being told to go back to where they came from, or that they should "Fuck off, we're full."(Which is also ludicrous, we have more land per person than almost any other nation on the planet.)

    Sounds very familiar.
  • But isn't most of that land inhabited by evil spiders and scorpions?

Being killed by horrible creatures disqualifies you for citizenship. If you're killed off that easily, you're probably not going to be that much of an asset to the nation.

It's okay, you can still swim in the ocean. Wait, what's that? Horrifying jellyfish swarms?
  • Sick. Thought it would get better today, but now all my face-holes are swollen, including my tongue and lips and soft pallet. My left eye is puffy and won't open all the way. I can't remember the last time I missed two consecutive days of work due to illness. Considering my immune system is constantly being tested because I teach, this bug must be a tough one.

And I think you gave it to me, asshole. If I could muster the strength to hit you, I would.

    Hit yourself for me.

EDIT: Though my symptoms aren't that bad. My eyes feel like they could swell up, but that's mostly just head pressure. My throat is scratchy as hell, and I feel like ass overall.

I feel like the appropriate joke would be "You are what you eat." however I am not that mean.

This is the only time it's nice to be 380 miles from my friends.
  • 1) The douchebag upstairs got home at four in the morning with his friend who's visiting from out of town. The proceeded to have an hour long shouting match over who was going to take the air mattress, keeping both me and my flatmate awake. When I got to bed, it was 5am, and I slept until four.

    2) Our Spanish flatmate decided to take over the cupboard the rest of us used to use for glasses and mugs and fill it with her food. That left her old cupboard nearly empty, with some glasses in it that were shared flat property. So, I took it over, and filled it with my stuff, since I am the only one in the flat with one cupboard's worth of space. Now, there's an angry note saying "WHERE'S ALL THE STUFF I HAD IN HERE" on the cupboard. There were two sleeves of 85p cookies, a bottle of cider vinegar, a box of Tesco value tea, and a bottle of vegetable oil in there. Woo.

    3) I've slept till four the past three days. In 72 hours, roughly 25-33% of that time has been spent sleeping. Nothing is helping. Fuck.
  • 3) I have a shitload of experience with dealing with sleeping problems and fucked up sleep schedules. Hit me up over PM and I can give some advice.
  • Who spends an hour yelling, even arguing, over something like that? We invented the Duel of Wits and/or rock-paper-scissors for just such a scenario.

Maybe my math is wrong, but aren't you supposed to spend about a third of your time sleeping? Sounds like boo-yah to me.
  • ...How do you get this many Teddy Bear Cacti stuck on you at once, unless you're really clumsy? This dude's day must suck, because I got one of those suck in me once by my own stupidity, and it did not feel good at all.
