It was so fucking hot in this house yesterday I ended up sleeping in the basement without covers and I still woke up in a puddle of sweat. Fortunately it's cooler today thus far.
Ugh. I got fired from my new job, because I was late twice (a 6am flight to Chicago that I rescheduled at my own expense, and the subsequent team meeting that I missed due to the time difference). While I admit that both of those were definitely my fault, I didn't think it'd be such a big deal. The worst part was, I found out when they closed my Google apps account, and I spent two hours troubleshooting it (on Saturday morning) and worrying that the entire company's account was cancelled before my boss gave me a call.
On a positive note, I got some freelance clients today, and I already have two interviews scheduled for early next week. Still, it sucks. I really liked my coworkers, and the office was right in my neighborhood. They also liked the work that I did, and said the firing was solely due to those incidents.
Christ, being late just twice got you canned? That's bullshit, dude. I feel like they should have at least given you some warning or just docked it from sick/vacation time or something.

Yeah, I getting the feeling if those were just the sole issues you would still have a job. I have known some strict policies but even with them being late twice was not a termination worthy offence.
Docking it from sick/vacation time would be totally fine with me.
I was late once before (about a month ago. I had asked to work from home, and they refused, so I hurried in to the office), and they talked to me about it, but it wasn't like a "final warning" kind of talk.
Client asks for a quote but gives me no information. Make a snazzy checklist for them so I can get a good idea of the scope of their project and what they want me to do for them. Client sends me three pictures of car parts with no further information.
I'm just breaking into this biz and it's already reminding me of CfH.
It's unimportant if it would've changed anything. It's so you at least know why you were fired, and then you can decide whether it was actually your fault and improve, or the parent was a dumb cunt.

If I get fired, you better believe I'm going to find out why.
Two of my friends that got married last year are now getting divorced. Never would've thought it would happen to them. Just goes to show that you sometimes never know the outcome of these things.
AMD's video driver support for laptops is officially fucking awful. I was looking for driver updates to solve what appears to be a memory leak in my card's DirectX software, and the automatic updater decided to give me the last driver designed for my laptop, which was in fact older than the one I currently had installed.
Now, laptop video drivers are designed to be model-specific. However, the thing about this particular driver, which incidentally is the one my laptop originally came with, is that it's fucking broken. So broken, in fact, that trying to use hardware acceleration on Flash videos (including YouTube, among others) will occasionally crash my fucking computer. It has been two and a half years, and they still haven't seen fit to put out a driver update for my laptop. I've only been able to get around it by using drivers optimized for this card but other laptop models, and now AMD's "smart" updating software won't let me do that.
My afternoon will now be spent yelling at tech support.
Due to becoming unexpectedly ill with a cold today, I collapsed at work. I was sent home today (being very generously given a ride home by one of my co-workers) and now I'm sick in bed. Fuck!
The only time I ever collapsed at work was actually at the Katsucon afterparty for staff many years ago. Scott, Pete, and I were there, and had ultra-flu. I collapsed at the table and slept for a while at one point.

Did you get sick throughout the day, or did you stubbornly go to work even though you were sick?
Americans generally go to work sick, or else they lose pay/vacation days.
Yuuup. Many don't get paid vacation, like my parents. I had to help them out when my mom had her gallbladder surgery and was out for awhile. Her not getting paid for a few weeks really hurt them, thus me giving them money. My old place didn't have paid sick/vacay either. Luckily I rarely got sick, and I took my laptop with me everywhere. My new place is awesome and we get paid time off, but we are even luckier to be allowed to work from home when sick, yay. Most Americans not so lucky

I probably deserved it, but that job was going to let me afford a modern desktop this school year.
At least the job wasn't critical to me making rent, so it's not a terrible problem.
