I'm going to derail the thread momentarily: I really like the phrase "X is pants." I first heard Gordon Ramsay use it, and I thought it was an awesome turn of phrase.
I predict its release will not match Scrym's expectations, as happened with TF2.
It's an alpha, we'll see. It's not like I'm taking the day off.
Also, unlike Tribes 2 and MegaTF, NS1 has a vibrant community. If NS2 sucks, NS1 will live on, much as Counter-Strike 1.6 lives on.
Speaking of which, I was playing some NS1 this weekend. Some guys were discussing whether or not to take the day off for NS2 today. Heroes of Newerth should learn some shit about community.

I give this game a better shot.
Also, recall that TF2, at its release, was not necessarily bad, so much as it was a different kind of game entirely. It's effectively in a different genre from TF1. Not too much to my taste, but still playable. It was the stateful advantage-conferring achievements that pushed it below the line for me.
Bionic Commando: Re-armed not only met, but actually exceeded, all of my expectations. Portal did the same. TF2 was the rare game that was less than I expected it to be: I'm very cynical when it comes to new games. My expectations for NS2 are about in line with what I already get from NS1.
I actually plan on playing some NS1 when I get home from work. Gonna be some good games until the release time I'm guessing. Scott and I played an amazing round this past weekend that included many awesome occurrences such as an amazing gorgie bile bomb push and several attempts at dropping the third hive.
Hahaha, oh well. I half-expected something like this to happen anyway. Not gonna spend more time on trying to connect until I get the word that it's actually working.
It's amazing that it installed without clogging download servers, and that the game actually ran. Networking is something that most game developers suck ass at. Granted, they obviously did not test this under real world conditions. Anyway, it will be fixed soon enough.
Huh... it only needs a 1.2 gHz processor and 256 megs of ram... I have a 1.6 and 512. Rare to see a game that came out any time in the last five years that I have a decent shot of playing.
Also, Standard Edition does come with access to the beta. I know someone earlier was asking about that.

I saw saying it has very low system requirements if you turn the settings all the way down.

Yeah. I can run Half-Life without studdering; I'm assuming I can run this easily.
Those minimum specs are probably predictions for the Gold version. I can run HL2 with full settings (Bloom and all.) but something in the alpha gives me stutters when I walk into a new room.

Does this happen when you play online or when you play on your own server? If I play online, it's lag city because of bugs in the net code. If I create a server, it's smoooth
The alpha was more playable than any other alpha I've ever encountered. I shot one skulk before it crapped out. Key bindings didn't seem to take effect, and as a result my "walk" button was also my "secondary attack" button. This would have been intensely annoying had I not become stuck any time I moved more than a few feet in any direction.
Just played around when I woke up this morning before work. It definitely has that old school NS feel. I could see the awesome underneath all the issues and that gives me hope. For an alpha, I'm extremely pleased. The only real issue I encountered was a CTD bug when trying to change the resolution to full screen.
Due to the jittery lag, I ran straight into the first hive in the second game I played, killed ALL of the aliens, and then almost killed the hive. No one could touch me. But then I lagged a bit, and an alien I never saw killed me.

Only had chance to test offline. I'm confident they'll improve it enough for the final release.
I'm kinda glad they moved Umbra off the lerk as when shit is really going down, it's usually too frantic to decide between that and spores.
Edit: Umbra is kinda odd for the aliens. Retreating, you want to put spores in a corner and then retreat around it whereas Umbra needs you to stay still for it to work, which isn't really what the aliens are about.

Omg this game looks so pretty ;_;
Though, this means that there will be no point at which Rym and Scott withdraw from the outside world for a week at a defined launch day.

Let's try again tonight. ^_~
