I paid $40 for mine on eBay, which also has all the pieces and is in good condition.
Hmm, apparently I assumed it was more rare than it actually is. Oh well, at least I tried to do something nice. :<

In other news, I just picked up 7 Wonders: Cities. It adds another block of cards to add to each age, so that everyone plays one extra hand in each. The big focus seems to be on forcing other players to pay out money, and if they don't have enough, then they incur Debt Tokens, which cost you points at the end of the game. There is also a mechanic that allows you to abstain from the combat stage at the end of each Age, and force your two neighbors to fight each other.

A friend of mine also got a copy of Luna, currently out of print, but coming back in print later this year. There is a lot going on in that game, and it really teaches you to flex the "look 3 turns ahead at all times" muscle. I didn't like it at first, but once I got the hang of all of the different choices I could make, I started to really dig it.

  • I'm definitely getting better at eclipse. Just not playing enough for my liking. And the knowledge gap with the guys I play with needs to get narrowed a bit. There is also a problem in that I think that generally people don't understand just how different the races are. One guy played orion for his first alien ever... and despite me telling hime he shouldn't, he traded 12 materials for 3 money to get just one more action in a turn. Then later on built a single monolith. And the mechanema player was gambling two interceptors with positron computers against aliens, which despite being viable, is not what I would consider a good risk. I told him as much specifically, but he still did it twice... once successfully and once not.

I'm trying to learn 'em. But it's just sad sometimes.
I think the humans are still my favorite. It's the 2 - 1 resource trading - they wind up being the best at responding to situations.

  • They are definitely a good pick, and I like that you can still eliminate one of the other alien races in a game by picking a specific color. I want to try the red aliens some, but I havn't been in a situation where I felt like that was the right pick yet.
  • I agree about humans in Eclipse. There are so many paths to victory that you really need to just react to the situations in picking the proper one. I played on Wednesday and let me first two discovery tiles tell me what I was gonna do. Lost 33-32 in a 6-player game.
Played Ankh-Morpork last night. Not bad. Heavily dependent on the cards you draw, and random events can really screw you up - but it's also good at getting everybody close to victory and turning the game into a mad scramble.

Eclipse is still my favorite board game.
Ankh Morpork is a fantastic game! I've gotten many a non-gamer to play it and they all loved it. I prefer it over stuff like Catan.

I'm assuming that the price for copies of Dune has dropped off quite a bit since Fantasy Flight re-released it as Rex last year. I know it's not "the same" but it seems to be good enough for most fans of the originally not wanting to pay $150. As for Scott's copy, you've had that one for a while though, right? You sir got a very good deal.

Yeah, I think I luckily did an eBay search at a time when nobody else did the same search.
  • Played Power Grid for the first time in around 4 years. Forgot how easy that game is to get into. Had a pretty good time, though it definitely seems like the Germany board is a little off balance. Is it just me? The west side of Germany seems to be a lot easier to win with than any other area.

I haven't played the German map enough to weigh in, but now I want to play Power Grid really bad. I am not a big fan of auctions, but Power Grid is worth it.

  • The new expansion for Galaxy Trucker is going to add a "Space Alert Mode." That's probably the push I need to actually buy the game.
  • My favorite part of Ankh Morpork is that there arent really any repeat cards. I mean each has unique artwork and usually has the 3 actions in a different order. Actually, I cant really remember if there are any with the same actions in the same order? Either way, thought that was cool, cause they obviously put a lot of effort into that.
  • I assume some people have seen the board game geek images from Gencon of the Eclipse expansion.

Nine players... I will probably only manage that once in my life.
  • I honestly don't know if I'd ever want to play that. It's just a time-between-turns issue.
  • It seems like one of those exotic, "do it just to say you did" things.
  • Tweeted about this and someone informed me that the expansion has rules where you and the guy across the table from you take turns at the same time. Interesting. Curious. Withholding judgement till I can read more detail and try it out.

If it's ok to take your turn at the same time as the guy across from you, why isn't it possible for everyone to take their turn simultaneously?

  • There are "two turn markers for 7 to 9 player games". I have no idea what the entails.
  • Fastest fingers research.
  • Probably because it would get too chaotic.

  • Played a couple games of Shadows Over Camelot last night. Haven't really played many co-op board games, so it was pretty fun with six of us. I get the feeling though that with a few more goes at it, the optimal path will be very obvious, at least for that number of players. The path probably varies a bit depending on the number of players.

The no-talking rules are bullshit and ruin everything.

I played in a beta test of Space Cadets and that game does wonders with solving the problems of bullshit co-op games. Everyone is assigned one role on a starship bridge: captain, weapons, navigation, sensors, etc. You start a timer and have 60 seconds or so to plan out what everyone is going to do on their turn to make sure the ship does all the things it needs to do.

After the time is up, everyone simultaneously plays their own solo games. Weapons plays a disk flicking game, engineering plays a tile placement game to power different systems, helm plays robo rally. When time is up in that phase, you all compare how you did, and see how it affects the operation of the ship. No bullshit no-talking rules, and also no problem of "bossy player" because when push comes to shove you have to do your own thing.

Agreed. We largely ignored those rules, which made it much easier to win.

It'd turn into Jungle Speed plus Eclipse.

I've been playing a lot of solitaire Carcassonne on my phone. I've gotten way better. One of the things I've picked up on is that rapid city completion is really important when you're a beginner, but tile denial and fields are far more important against better players.

  • Got a question regarding Amazons in Small Worlds. The rule that states you have to pull 4 back in your hand during redeployment if possible. Do you have to abandon regions if you end up having just 1 token on each land?
  • Yes that's how I always play them.
  • That is correct
  • Had a nice board game day yesterday, played some Tichu, Alien Encounters, Guillotine, 7 Wonders, and Glen Moore. I am looking to get some 2 player games in my library for future gaming events since I got the 3-5 people groups covered. Any suggestions?

    WTF is Glen Moore?
