Awesome suggestions, guys! Do you all know anything about "Mr. Jack Pocket", by the way? It seems like it may be perfect for what I'm looking for, and I want to know what you guys feel about it.
Want a deep abstract board game that I can play on the go, so I'm asking for Hive for Christmas. Anyone know if Hive Pocket is too small for use as a main set?
Confirmed it works. Bought Castles of Burgundy and Dominant Species, the only top BGG games we haven't played and don't own with the single exception of Mage Knight Board Game.
Dammit. Alien Frontiers is currently not being sold by Amazon and the only one on there isn't Prime shipping. I was planning on buying that for Jeremy for Christmas. I'll have to check the local stores. Boo.

Alien Frontiers is published by Clever Mojo Games and distributed by Game Salute, which forbids online sales of its games except through the official Game Salute web store or the publisher's website (in order to prevent discounting).
You can get it at local game stores, but only if they carry Game Salute games. You have pretty good game stores up in WA, but might want to double check Game Salute's store page just to make sure your local shop is on their list before making the trip.
I saw it at the local store near my work. I saw it there the other day. I just hope it's still there so I can purchase it. (Game Matrix) Quick question, did they upgrade the base set for the pieces to not look like Hershey kisses? I remember something like that, or do I need to buy the expansions/upgrade sets?

You need the upgrade kit to turn the wooden skittles into plastic cities.
Maybe, I'll just get him Netrunner for now. That's cheap on Amazon, and with Prime shipping.
It really is adorable when companies cook up schemes in attempt to cut out major online shops like Amazon. If I were you I would wind up doing the same thing. I don't know how cutting out discounters is helping Game Salute if it's going to lose sales.

Coldguy is correct, but at least in the latest version they replaced with wooden skittles on the scoreboard with the plastic spaceship models.
You can buy Alien Frontiers through Clever Mojo Games on Amazon, but for the base game you have to pay $17 for shipping. That's redonculous. It's honestly cheaper to get everything locally. I can wait to get the game later. I told Jeremy that we'll get the game later. Plus having another 2 player game is good to add to the collection.
Nah, aside from this one boneheaded decision, they are a company who does otherwise good things. Game Salute is a design house/designers's agent/publisher/distributor all wrapped into one company. Basically, if you are a small indie guy or a tiny publisher and you don't want to deal with the non-game-design aspects of publishing a game, Game Salute steps in and provides whichever pieces you don't want to handle yourself.
You see their name all over Kickstarter, under the guise of their "Springboard" program. They take the ideas from these small-time designers/publishers and really clean them up. They can: Work to make sure the game plays well. Hire professional artists to make the game look nice. Handle all advertisement and PR. Provide group-rate booth space at conventions. Deal with the actual manufacturer to get the game made. Handle all of the Kickstarter reward shipping, etc. They also offer a higher payment to the game designers than any of the other publishers.
Long story short, they prevent a lot of games from being shitty, and run smart KS campaigns to make sure good games get funded. They are like GW in that they have stupid distribution policies. They are not like GW in that they actually put out good products, and don't sue the pants off their fans for questionable trademark violation.

And Netrunner? Which is rated higher than both of those games you mentioned, at 15.

2 player Bananagrams?
I know you probably mean non-electronic games, but if you grab a couple of cheap DS lites + R4 you can play Tetris, Mario Kart, Puzzle League etc.
I used to do this!
Tetris is always Win.
Smash Up is great fun but not recommended under 4 players.
If you're willing to sacrifice the portability and quick setup, I can't recommend Confusion enough.
I own Mr. Jack Pocket, but haven't played it. The bits are nice and high quality. Worth a look as long as you don't hate logic puzzles.
