It has now been about one year since I got the 98 Neon. The following repairs were completed:
4 new tires replace fuel filler plugs and wires tranny hoses valve cover gaskets PCV valve and hoses All brake lines complete replace of back brakes trunk upholstery removed and trunk leaks sealed.
I still need to do belts and water pump.
The car burns/losses quart of oil every 600 miles and there is an exhaust leak.
Over the summer I was getting near 29 mpg now i'm back to 24mpg. suggestions?
I saw the title and the inside of the engine compartment and I was all, "What. He shoved a 306 in a beemer? That's just silly." And then he started the engine. Fuck, was that magnificent.
Okay so I've got a couple of things going on with my car:
1. The Check Engine light is on for the catalytic converter. Other than the miles I'm probably losing from a tank of gas I'm not having any problem with that.
2. It won't go over 3K RPM. When it gets to 3K it starts to shake and jerk and doesn't get any better performance. Usually not a concern as it shifts sooner than I get to that speed, but out on the interstate I'm stuck going 75 MPH or less.
3. The transmission seems to not want to engage 3rd gear (at about 45 MPH) if it is cold. This REALLY hinders my performance as I often get on the highway faster than my car wants to get up to temp, and I happen to get on at one of the few left side entrances in the country, meaning I need to be doing 60 BEFORE I get off the ramp or I'm liable to get an anal exam from someone in the left lane.
1. Never had a car with one 2. Balance, align and rotate your tires dude... 3. If auto, you are running out of tranny fluid, check that fucker up. If manual, clutch pressure plate might be on it's last miles.
I don't think his tires have to do with his engine shaking or performance on the highway. Maybe one of your cylinders isn't firing? Actually, if the fuel's not being burned and going straight into the exhaust, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what mucking up your catalytic converter. Check your plugs, their lines, and your air/fuel mixture.
As for your transmission, what Roboto said. And get into a habit of checking your cars fluids once a week. S'what I do.
Oh, I understood it as shaking and jerking on the steering at higher speeds.
As Victor said, check oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid (if auto), power steering fluid, at least once a week, as well as tire pressure. Also put some cardboard underneath your car once in a while to check for leaks.

Yeah no the steering is fine, the whole car rumbles and it feels like its trying to go over but can't. Anyway yeah I'll check those things out. It helps to work at a car part store and have a boss that's been in the mechanic business for a long time.
The shaking and jerking you're experiencing is what we would call missing or a misfire. Basically the smooth and controlled ignition of the gasoline is no longer happening.
So yeah my mechanic friends are saying it needs a tune up as well. Four iridium spark plugs aren't so bad, but since my car is coil on plug I'd have to replace the whole coil, which are $80 each. >_<
I topped off my transmission fluid and it still won't shift into third until warmed up.
Don't just top it off. Drain it, then re-fill. Or have it done for you, either way. It's fine and dandy to put new fluid in, but if the old fluid is causing the problem, it's still present, just mixed in with the new stuff.

I was under the impression it was the quantity, not the quality, but I'll get the fluid changed as well.

Normally, yes, but when you're having problems like this, it can be caused by old, thick, gluggy or polluted fluid, so it's best to give the whole thing a freshen up.
Smoke tires... on dirt? Fuck. Those two events look like a fucking good time. Also, those two blonde gals in the deni ute muster video look like a good time fucking.
