Someone said something peculiar to me today. I mentioned how I liked indie pop and she said something to the effect of "Pleb." At the time I let it slip by, but the more I think about it, the more pointed it's starting to sound. Of course catchiness doesn't automatically make something good, but I also think writing a great, memorable, tuneful melody takes as much craft as does writing a very complex piece of music, just in sort of a different way.

Coincidentally, this was from cute Jazz History class girl.
Fixed it for how I took it on first reading. I'm a little alarmed that she'd be rather closed-minded like that. There's lots of indie pop bands who rely on catchiness over quality, but there are plenty that I've seen that really experiment with sound while trying to maintain the sort of potent energy necessary to really grab a crowd, and I'd agree that it takes a lot of skill to do something like that.

Seems like kind of a buzzkill, man. But hey, could be good conversation fodder. Get coffee with her and pick her mind about it.

  • She wasn't the one who said she hated ska, right? I remembered someone posting that on the forum about a year ago (back when I was a lurker) and me spitting my Hawaiian Punch all over my computer screen.
  • To summarize the long-running musical debate between Andrew and I:
Me: "I need my music to have a clever hook."
Andrew: "No, dawg, good equals technical and complicated."
  • I love the production editors at NPR. They pick some of the best segue music for their reports. This morning I was listening to How You can Harness "The Power of Habit" and it was followed by "Captain of Industry (Overture)" aka Homer Simpson in the Land of Chocolate song.

This is not the first time I've heard great music choices. At the end of It's All Politics, their song choices are usually good snubs and zings on the people they talk about.

I can listen to some technical and complicated music and appreciate it and respect it. But unless that music is also pleasant to listen to, you won't catch me listening to it intentionally.

Naw, that was WUB's story, not mine. And it was far more than a year ago, so I'm not sure how I remembered that o_O

  • So was the (not)death of Sherlock Holmes in The Final Problem the first Superhero death?

Shit man, even I had forgotten that. That was back during my senior year of high school, I think.

Not by a longshot. Here's a much older one off the top o' my head.

But Hercules died and went to Mount Olympus as a demi-god. They didn't say "He died" and then a few years later go like "Psych!"
That's why it is a "superhero death," because it came back to the status quo because of the popularity of the character.

  • Wait wait wait wait wait. Superman is back. Captain America is back. Even Bucky is back. That doesn't mean they didn't die.
  • None of them did die. Superman slipped into a coma, Cap was sent through time. Bucky was tricked out by the Russians and made cyborg. Hal Jordan did die though and came back.

Yeah, Holmes falling off the falls was like Superman's coma, except for the fact that Doyle wanted him to stay down for good.

Just one of those mysteries of the mind, sort of like how I was the rainman of Simpson's trivia in middle school, and now can't remember a damn thing...

I miss the days where, if you wanted a character to come back to life, you had to go into the goddamn underworld and get them yourself.

Something I noticed looking at The Ghost Of Stephen Foster video is that, in black and white animation, you see lots of metamorphosis between things, which is probably harder to pull off when you have to deal with colour changing as well.

Blah... it's much easier just to go to the clone labs and clone them back to life. :)
  • Whenever someone says the phrase "technically cheating," I want to punch them right in the fucking face. Cheating is doing something your partner would be uncomfortable with. There is no technicality at all. If you have any questions, ask your fucking partner.

Hospitals smell funny and I do not like them, aside from the fact that people get healed in them.
I hate hospitals because that's were people go to die. Just lie there to die.

In other news, Krull, kinda fun good sort of lame.

Never-mind, I just found some apple sauce hidden in my fridge, and that combined with some white rice and soy sauce makes a delicious Friday night college dinner.

That sounds like the craving of a pregnant woman.
