Maybe make the Dota 2 Wiki your bathroom reading for a while (I recommend the Mechanics section to start with).
Maybe watch some replays or live games. The International 3 is on now and there are a lot of live streams on all the time (well, you can watch replays of the prelims with commentary in game and there will be live games starting tomorrow until late sunday PST).
If that doesn't scare you off, do the tutorials (all of them, all the times you can).
Then play in solo queue or with friends (I'm sure there are people here who will play).
Honestly, if you're not interested in spending 50+ hours getting competent (including reading), you probably won't have a good time.
If you think this is bullshit and that all games should instantly reveal all their secrets to your all knowing eyes because you've played a lot of games before, you probably won't have a good time.
This post is terrible from the point where it suggests to read the wiki (and doesn't even link to it, instead links to Canadian Google) for mechanics. Just. No. Have fun. Play with friends. Have fun. Don't listen to Apreche. Have fun. And above all, just have fun.
So boring, I was expecting there to be some Scott level noobnes, but that looks to be on level with my average game. I think there has been some misadvertaising here.
But anyways, he said he wanted to "learn this shit" and playing Dota 2 blind is probably the hardest way to learn it.
That's true. But reading the wiki is only a tiny bit less hard. Best way is to play with people who know the game and/or friends. And it seems he's having fun with friends.

Reading wiki just for the sake of reading it is stupid, but it's a good place to know when you need to know something.

I actually found the Mechanics section and the Items section pretty good once I had a vague idea of how the game was supposed to be played, but I also have weird anxiety issues about not understanding how games like this work under the hood.

That's a first. Neutral creep clashing are a terrible way to name lanes if you ask me. And it's plainly misusing English! Going by natural-creep-distance-from-tower (what a fucking mouthful) would get you either far or close as answer, not long or short, the creeps are far from the tower or close to the tower. "There's a long distance between the creeps and the tower" is terrible Engrish. The lanes would also be the same length on average, not longer or shorter at all, so it still wouldn't be ironic.
It makes more sense to determine length of lanes by their influence. I.e. towers, the place where backup comes from. Suicide lane's short. Safe lane is long. If everyone started with Boots of Travel I could see using creeps as factor, at which point you can only name them TOP, MID, BOT. And hell, it would also make more sense to name lanes by distance between T1 and T2 towers. WHICH WOULD STILL BE THE SAME AS MOST PEOPLE KNOW.
Not like it matters much, because the majority (2 people is apparently "many" lawl) use bot, mid, and top. They're pussies, because suicide lane sounds the manliest of all, and pussy carries who can't even lift by themselves (@lvl 1) gotta be baby-sat in the safe lane, for babbies. YOUR RAMPAGE IS THE RESULT OF THE REST OF THE TEAM BEING SO BAD-ASS THAT YOU COULD SPEND ONE THOUSAND MINUTES CLICKING HEADS CREEPS.
So Valve hired a local Seattle reporter to handle the interview/floor work and she's been awesome! She doesn't put on a fake sheen of knowledge about the game and openly admits she knows nothing about DotA and it really works to make her segments fun and engaging. It also helps that she's pretty funny.
Also, the in-game client for watching the matches is pretty rad! You can select audio commentary streams in different languages and even have the commentor control your camera so you don't have to figure out where to look if you don't really know whats going on.
Overall, Valve has really stepped up and make this "e-sports" tournament fun to watch!

She's great. 2GD and Puppey are major dicks though, and it's hilarious.

If you do stick it out, you'll have fun.

EDIT: "the ironic "Short Lane."" Wut? What's ironic about the short lane?
