Yeah I was going to mention Austin but no one wants to live in Texas.

Austin isn't so bad. It's really diverse to be honest.
Yes, but it's surrounded on all four sides by Texas.
That's what I was getting at :P If I had to live in Texas I would most definitely live in Austin.

This may be a silly thing to ask since I don't really follow anyone here on FB or Twitter, but I've been wondering for a while where the heck WUB has been. He hasn't been on here in 9 months. Where he go?

Also, http://rainmeter.net/ is what I was looking for. It reminds me of my WinAmp days of looking for all the customizable skins.

Texas really isn't that bad, and there are some nice advantages to living there; no state income tax, food and gas are cheaper than most other states even with the 10% sales tax, there's drive through liquor stores everywhere, various types of contraband are available cheaply, and nowhere else in the country is further than a 24 hour drive. Also, people in the south are much nicer, more polite, and more hospitable than in other parts of the country.
  • Drive through liquor stores sounds like a con, actually.
  • The drive through liquor store look like auto garages. There is one downtown near UT if I recall. Never shopped at one before though.

Liquor barns! There's a bunch of them down here.

  • So, the attorney general of North Carolina says that his office will no longer defend NC's ban on gay marriage in court, citing other states' similar bans being declared unconstitutional (by a federal court but not the supreme court if I'm understanding correctly.)

So, I guess that the ban is heading for a reversal soon, but the whole thing hasn't been to the GOP-heavy Supreme Court yet...

Might be cause for some temporary optimism though.
  • You'd still have to deal with horrible racism on the part of the residents (not all of them, just a lot of them), even if it's not enshrined into law. Granted, this is for South Carolina, not North, but I'm assuming their geographic proximity implies similar culture.

Not looking for urban. Suburban Boston does not strike me as cheap. RTP in NC would be perfect if not for the winger insanity tainted politics and, you know, racism.

Will check it out though. Worth a look since I haven't. We're not really looking for apartment living or renting generally.

Suburban Boston varies a lot by area AFAIK. Some areas might be in your range. Also Boston has a passable public transit system if you want to work in the city.

I was going to say there were some in Albany Creek and of course I would rather live back in Queensland than in Texas.

Actually I'd rather live in Queensland than most places in America but unfortunately there are not many tech jobs in Australia in general.

I'm not sure what you consider "cheap," but the southwestern Boston suburbs, close to RI, are a lot cheaper than the closer and northern suburbs. They are also located along I-495, which is a major tech hub including EMC (headquartered in Hopkinton), Cisco, IBM, HP, and a bunch of smaller companies (including mine). Traffic is usually pretty decent and, unless you're going to something on the far north end of 495 like HP, your commute is typically around 30 mins or so.

Commuter rail is also available if you need to work in the city or Cambridge, though you're looking at probably around 45-60 mins for the train ride.

UI mockup for that space game! From the upper right corner, we got your kill score, time remaining, number of ships remaining, ammo counters, indicator towards arena center, and fuel/thrust bars. In the middle is a compound crosshair modeled after the one from Star Wars Rogue Squadron.

Does this look readable? Is is missing anything obvious?
  • The top corners are bit hard to read because they're a bit dark, especially compared to the center ones. The other things look fine, though.

We'll be sure to watch the transparency in the final version.
  • For Rym and Scott, what is your opinion of Vocaloid?
  • For Rym and Scott, what is your opinion of Vocaloid?

  • I should have guessed. There is nothing big going on and I saw this thread and asked the first question that came to mind.
  • Does anyone plan on or know anyone that is going to the Tim and Eric live show they're currently touring for? I went last night and it was pretty good but I didn't realize there was a merch booth until the end and got in line to get a specific shirt. The guy in front of me literally got the last one they were selling at the Seattle show. They seem to be restocking them from what I've heard so I was wondering if I could get someone to buy me one and I'd pay for the shirt and S&H plus something extra for the trouble.

Let it be known that Scott wants to force us to drink his vegetable juice.
  • To be fair, I would drink it of it existed. Hatsune Miku vegetable juice. After all, it is only $2.

Just catching up on this thread. There is a pretty good chance that when those cases gets to SCOTUS it will end in a 5-4 or 6-3 decision in favor of striking the bans down. Kennedy has written the opinion for the three gay rights cases that have reached the Court so far, and I'd bet good money that Roberts would join him for legacy reasons.
  • Only one court has upheld the bans and the reasoning was also based on Windsor.

Now that Minecraft has been bought by Microsoft will this bring the death of the YouTube Minecraft video?

I have a certain repect for those that make money off broadcasting their in-game hijinks!

  • I actually think Minecraft and Microsoft are a really good fit. I think they will actually do well with it.
  • You don't think they'll be like Nintendo when it comes to broadcasting their game?

But thinking about it those broadcasts have made it a household name which contributes to its longevity.
  • So why do you feel as if Nintendo = Microsoft.
    They have very different agendas.
Microsoft sells a brand, operating systems Office and then smaller offshoots.
Having their name on a popular casual game gives them brand exposure between Windows 8 which was received poorly and Windows 9 (which is essentially Windows 8 that boots to desktop and configurable touch system.
  • I've been attending a lot of soccer games lately to watch my niece play. The problem is that we live in Texas. The sun will melt you. I have a cheap canopy, but i'm thinking of getting a beach umbrella since it's easier to carry. Anyone have any suggestions? Are all beach umbrellas basically equal ? should I just get the cheapest? :)
  • For those who work in IT / CS or have good knowledge about the profession. How in depth should your knowledge on database management systems. The concepts presented in an introductory course that I have taken seem quite basic.

I can't see my self being a database system administrator but can think of use cases where a database system could be important in developing software especially in the medical field where most programs use a file system.

So far I think I could easily construct a database structure, design a schema and fill it plus write a program in a language to interface with the database.

Should I spend time (and money) doing an advanced course?
