  • But can't you run a laptop off AC without a battery? It would need some sort of switching.

My guess would be something along the line of a capacitor in parallel with the load that can provide power for a split second while some solid-state switching happens.
  • You sometimes can. It usually has to do with the laptop and how its set up.
  • Do you charge a laptop battery across the same terminals it provides power through, like with rechargeable AA's? If so you can just put the AC power, battery, and load all in parallel and it'll charge the battery while AC is connected and immediately switch to providing power when disconnected.
  • Or does depend on the machine. Some models require a battery (even a dead one) when on AC. Mostly shitty manufacturers.

    Louisville KY
  • Get a road bike or a hybrid. Probably a hybrid.
  • Actually if you have any inkling that you might be doing mountain biking and don't want another bike then get a mountain bike. A hybrid or road bike will not be able to do any sort of mountain biking.
  • It's pretty flat. No need for mountain bike. If the roads are well paved, you can get a road bike if you want. A hybrid will work no matter what, but will be better if the roads have potholes and other things that might kill you if you have skinny tires while going fast.
  • You are correct.
  • And are they any bikes you guys recommend? My price range is $100-$400.

You will most likely only find a used bike for that price in my bike buying experience. Just ride a bunch around and see which one you like best.

Well Amazon is a friend of mine in that case considering they've got hybrids as low as $150.

I am an Amazon fan, but you want to ride a bike before you buy it. The absolute most important things for a bicycle are:

    1) It is not broken
    2) It has brakes
    3) It has gears
    4) It is the right size and shape for your body

You can't really determine #4 without fitting and/or test riding.
  • I have not ordered bikes from Amazon but I have ordered bikes through the mail. It was a terrible, horrible experience that I cannot recommend.

To be fair, Amazon may be a much better source of mailed bicycles to end users, but our experience with another retailer was not good. Luckily they also have local branches so returning wasn't so bad (until "the computer said" that we could only have an 80% refund and I almost had to resort to kung fu.)

So why did I just get a notification that a comment had to be approved? Did something change while I've been away?

Apparently did not happen on this post. Just a post in the TIE FIGHTER thread.

I'd rather have it lose a couple real posts here and there instead of the forum being flooded with Viagra ads.

  • What non-iTunes software can I use to manage files on an iPad 2 with Win 7?

You don't manage files on an iPad. It has no file system that is user accessible beyond the photos, which work the same way an SD card works in your digital camera. You sync it, and you use iTunes. There is no alternative.

The thing is nowadays, you don't even need to sync it to iTunes. Modern iOS devices can just stand alone without the need to sync to anything ever.
  • How do I delete files, then? I'm trying to clear off music so that I have room for cartoons on there. The only options I can find are going song by song through my entire library, or a hard reset. Is there somewhere I can delete a large number of musics at once?

This is music you sync'd through iTunes? What is your sync settings? Is it manual syncing or automatic syncing?

Go to iTunes desktop application, select all songs you want deleted, delete songs.

If you are doing it through iPad you can only do per song, per artist, or per album. Or of course just wiping all your music.

Although if you're selecting specific stuff anyway I don't see why going through per item is any different than another approach where you're also going through per item.

If there's no way to do it without iTunes, I'll just go ahead and do a hard reset.

EDIT: I can't do a hard reset without my Apple Password, which I forgot years ago. I tried disassociating my account from the device, but it still asked me for that accounts password.

  • lol I feel like I'm missing some sort of scenario you are trying to achieve. Even on iTunes you are still going through each song or album anyway selecting for delete. On the iPad you just swipe to the left and hit delete.

Also not sure how you're going to put cartoons on your iPad with using iTunes or going through the Apple store which will need your password.

VLC Streamer has a function where you can get cartoons onto the iPad. I don't know the technicalities of how it works, but it does.
  • Winamp could manage iOS devices, if memory serves.

I highly doubt that still works.

Last I checked, it does it by interfacing with iTunes. It uses some hooks (not sure if they're documented or undocumented) to talk to iTunes to do the heavy lifting.
