Things you liked and now hate

  • Still Alive, on the other hand, is nigh-unlistenable for me now.
Come on, man. There's no use crying over every mistake.
  • I used to be decently into American football for a while(it helped that my local team, the New England Patriots were pretty good at the time) but nowadays I can say I just about hate the sport. I hate how the commentary refuses to actually educate me about a game that is extremely technical and strategic. I want to know why you'd run a 4-3 defense instead of a 3-4. I watched football on a semi regular basis for about 10 years and I still have no clue. I can't even figure it out from the video games. I also hate the people who are fanatically devoted to the NFL, because they're usually fantasy football jackoffs who wouldn't give a darn except that they have one tight end playing in a particular game. Finally, I hate the NFL itself because I could not believe my eyes when the network broadcasting a game actually came out and said that they have to stop broadcasting this game that's running long due to their contract with the NFL and have to move on to the next game. The NFL is way too big and way too powerful if it's able to pull BS like that.
On a related note, I also strongly dislike sports talk radio. I listened to it and only it for a very long time and now I'm tired of the cliches and the fans calling in whining about every little thing. The only use for sports talk stations for me at this point are the broadcasting of games. Otherwise, I do not care, I'll look up the scores on my phone if I want to.

For those of you who are nerdy but don't hang out in nerdy communities as much, I could see how you might not get this one. I saw JoCo live with TMBG last month and when he played that song (no "Want You Gone"? Seriously?) I was basically just wishing that I was at the concert three or four years ago when it was a whole lot more relevant.
  • Religion. Republicans. People in the military. Also being outside (fucking Mosquitoes). DVDs. Anything on physical media, really, except for laser disk. Trains.
  • Also being outside (fucking Mosquitoes)
I can't even remember the last time I was pestered by mosquitoes.
  • I can't even go to get the mail without getting bitten by at least 3. I can't wait for the weather to get cold enough to force them away.
  • It's amusing to me of some of the things you young college kids complain about. You guys once griped that during high school there wasn't enough cool geeky people like you, but now you're immersed in it and complain because some of the things are too mainstream or overdone.

It will be amusing to see how you guys are after college when things change.

While I understand how things can get overdone, I normally try to ignore it and at least appreciate that something I consider geeky/nerdy is popular around you because we are still a minority.
  • I totally agree with that, honestly. Like...I wouldn't complain about the overload of Portal or Invader Zim because I'm just glad there are people who won't make fun of me for my Jigglypuff or whatever. Maybe they aren't "sophisticated" geeks, but I choose not to judge. They like something that is popular, which is entirely normal.
  • Lion King, Fairly Oddparents, Dragonball Z, Family Guy, and The Simpsons. (Although the animated intro by John K was pretty cool)

A good comparison of 3-4 vs. 4-3 defenses

As in most things, Google is your friend. (Although I must admit, this was very educational for me also, so thanks for making me look it up.)

Welcome to the modern herd. ^_~
  • Anime.

I don't know if it was because I lived in Japan and I saw so much utterly CRAPPY anime, or that I started to recognize the same character stereotypes and story tropes over and over again, or if the quality of recent(ish) shows has just declined, but I haven't liked or seen an anime (tv series or movie) that I've been really wowed by in a long time.

I remember when I would check forums and websites on an almost daily basis, eager to find out what new shows were coming out in Japan, and what shows where being licensed in the US, and when they were coming out.

Now, I don't care anymore. With the exception of the latest Ghibli movie, my anime consumption has dropped to pretty much zero.
  • I used to use photoshop, but now I find it clunky and lacking the functions I want compared to GIMP.
OMG what version of photoshop are you on?
The GIMP is, well, gimpy in comparison to CS4 and CS5. 3D paint tool. OBJ import. Instant Seam blending. XNormal plugins.
Seriously, as much as I hate Adobe, I really can't say that the Open Source tools have kept up.

Everything you said applies to American television. And British televion. And all media. Ever.

CS4. I keep it around because there are some plugins I use regularly like the nVidia bumpmap converter. If I'm doing actual 2d art instead of just textures, I use Painter anyway.

It's this. Anime has been going to shit lately. At the very least, it gives us the opportunity to go through older stuff. Said the 80-year-old in a 24-year-old's body.

    Thats cause you so sweet!!!!!

Bullshit. Everyone says this about all media once they get too comfortable with an old style. Nostalgia and the lack of the filter of time is more to blame than any objective change in quality.

For every Akira or Cowboy Bebop, there were a dozen shit-tier shows, then as now.

All media are the same. Seinfeld was revolutionary, but not all of it holds up to a modern viewer with modern sensibilities. ST:TNG's first season is pretty god awful compared to more modern media. Lethal Weapon has some extremely painful scenes and bad camera work that wasn't obvious in the 80s.

Nearly anyone who says "media X used to be great, but has gone down hill" has no basis to actually back this up.

  • That's why I only watch highly recommended anime from my peers. Even with their recommendations, I only watch a select few. No need to waste time watching a bunch of crap when others can do that for you and tell you what's what. =P

I forget. Did you watch Madoka?
  • I forget. Did you watch Madoka?
    Ayup.

I need to watch it a second time, but I'm lazy. I watched a few episodes of Nichijou so far. Very amusing so far.

He said he wasn't going to start playing it yet because it's still spoilerz.

So what functionality does the GIMP give you that CS4 does not? Why would you texture in GIMP, when you can go instantly back and forth between PAINTING RIGHT ON THE MODEL and regular UV map layout?

Anyway, more on topic, I rarely HATE things I used to like, merely grow indifferent. Boy bands are a good example. I used to love watching girly Asian teenage boys dance around and now I don't really care that much.
BL comics are also like that. I used to think "OOOh! cute boys in love!" and now they just seem plot-less and formulaic. (I was never really into the smutty ones, anyway.)

Same here. When I was younger, I thought newspaper comics were awesome; only now do I realize that most of them are terrible.
  • Family Guy.

I don't know if I've just finally grown out of liking it, or if my tastes changed, but I can't stand to watch it now, new or old.
  • The Geeknights podcast.

    The forums disillusioned me.

    Same reasons for me.
