Just caught up on Attack on Titan for the week and now I see why there was suddenly an explosion of chatter. Wow, what an episode.
As for Gargantia, this is what it looks like when Urobuchi writes a genuinely lighthearted beach episode, eh? Never thought I'd see the day. The comedy was a beat slow in a lot of spots but had some good ideas, anyway. Definitely the weakest episode so far, but as long as this is the breather episode and stuff ramps up from here, I'm ok with it.
Attack on Titan. The 5th episode just sealed it for me, I can't stop thinking about it!
Just caught up with Attack on Titan today. Glad I've avoided the "I can't wait to tell you every spoiler from the manga" pricks so far. I loved that I went into that cold.
That poster needs to become real! Apparently crunchyroll had issues getting episode 6 up, but it's there now! And I've got 30 minutes before I can watch it! HURRY TIME, HURRY!
Just watched the first episode of Attack on Titan, based both on a recommendation from a friend and all the chatter going on in this thread about it. I really like the character's eyes.
I'm really glad that happened. I was getting a major Gurren Lagann vibe off this show from the start, so I was really hoping something like that was going to happen!

But, maybe he is still alive inside that Titan's belly!.

Maybe he will figure out how to control the Titan from the inside, and then he'll attach that Titan to another Titan!

Urobuchi only specifically wrote the first and last episode. Which is probably why the show is kind of odd/bad.
Yeah, I read that yesterday. He still signed off on these episodes, though, and was in charge of an overall plot structure that hasn't really gone anywhere in 3 episodes. In fact, the most notable aspect of the show recently has been some irritatingly backwards takes on gender roles. But I'm still watching, with the feeling it might turn out to be a decent anime if one skips the entire middle section.
Edit: this show has also brought me back to thinking about the idea that being comedic and making genuine, positive statements about life without lapsing into cliches is deceptively hard. Urobuchi is great at writing twisted mindfuck dystopian stories but may just not be very good at this.
While the recent episodes haven't been very actiony, I'd hardly say they're bad. Ledo made some serious progress on becoming "human", and show a lot of growth. His lessening reliance on Chamber to communicate is a pretty good analogy for his adjustment to civilian life. It just hasn't returned to the show it was in the first episode yet.

The aggressive transsexual prostitute caricature, which was repeated over and over, pissed me off. The fanservicey shots of Amy & friends (who are 15!) in both episodes 5 and 6 pissed me off. (I had a similar reaction to Madoka, which lots of people loved, so obviously ymmv.) Ledo's reaction to being served octopus seemed really dumb and over the top.
What have we gotten out of the last few episodes? Amy and Ledo are increasingly into each other, Ledo's trying to fit in a little bit, Ledo's agreed to help with salvage operations. That's pretty much it. We've seen two festival days in a row and Gargantian culture isn't really interesting.
Yay, Gargantia is back to being pretty good, finding a nicely nuanced conflict that should carry the next several episodes. I'm just going to pretend the beach episode never happened.
Hataraku Maou-Sama: so does the new ED mean that Chiho, the token human in the main cast, is actually God? This show is really clever and keeps creating interesting new situations with lots of possible symbolic and psychological readings on the characters, even if sometimes it's a little goofy and fanservicey for my taste. Loved the mannerisms and comedy around the new character this week.
Also, Attack on Titan continues to be awesome, easily the episode of the week again, but ugh, I feel bummed that I can't fully enjoy the piles of fan stuff being created around it because of spoilers. I already read a couple things that I really wish I didn't in places that I thought were pretty safe; guess I need to confine the discussion to here and Reddit from now on.
