  • Best use of time travel usage in that film was the karaoke scene.
Both I and Dave Riley approve of this comment.

  • One of the characters just said she wouldn't waste a "milibyte" on this memory...

Am I crazy, or is that a completely nonsensical term?
It's nonsense. I dropped that show and the nonsense is one of the reasons for me doing so.
I dropped it twice and came back to it. Not that it deserves that treatment, but I was a little tired of games today and I went down my list of unwatched stuff through a bunch of episode 1's that didn't work for me before finding that again. There was also another partially completed one... Mirai Nikki?

  • Watching HxH and F/Z when it comes back on April.
Also, I have 2 eps left to finishing Tiger & Bunny... I didn't like that one that much.
  • Just a quote from Guilty Crown's wikipedia page that summarizes the insanity/stupidity of it all...
On December 24, 2029, an outbreak of the Apocalypse Virus appeared in Roppongi, Tokyo leading to a chaotic turmoil in the country. Unable to contain it, the Japanese government asked for international help. The series latter reveals the outbreak was caused by the Ouma siblings. Mana, the first person infected with the virus and turning insane, offer her brother Shu to marry her and start a new race together. However, scared on what became of his sister, Shu rejected her offer and called her a monster. His rejection hurt Mana's feelings and made her berserk which the virus evolved and trigger the Apocalypse outbreak spreading over Tokyo.
  • Wha? That's weird. I was all hyped about that series, but I guess I can give it a miss, then. I have been really out of the anime loop, but today at lunch (I am home sick with a cold) I watched the end of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. I wish it had not been spoiled for me, because that was one of those shows where knowing the end changes how you approach each scene emotionally. I did tear up a lot.
  • I re-watching Dragon Ball Z while doing pseudo-P90X
    It pumps me up :O

If you're referring to my post, I would still try it for yourself. Maybe someone else can make more sense of it. I'm still watching it... but when stuff comes up like that (which I probably should have spoiler warning'd) it's... incomprehensible.
  • I've been watching many anime series off and on. I might as well give a short list of things I'm watching and things I've dropped

High school of the Dead: A case of the curiosity killed the cat. I got half-way through the first episode and then had to shut it off. The power of boobs and psuedo-pornography is what is keeping the anime industry alive at present, which makes me very sad.

Gundam 0079: Having never watched a Gundam series in my life, I decided to start watching Gundam 0079 and I'm loving it. Right now, I'm about halfway through the series after taking a 1 1/2 month break (I watched 25 episodes in seven straight days) and will go back this weekend.

Gankutsuou: After hearing this was one of the few Gonzo shows that does not suck a million dicks, I decided to give it a try. I only made it through four episodes. I adore the designs in it, but it moved to slowly for me to care. So I just dropped it.

Fate/zero: After reading a recent anime guide, I decided to give it a shot based on its premise alone. I finished one episode and decided it was too bloated for me to go into any further.

Hokuto no Ken: Nothing but the obvious needs to be said about it. Stupidest show ever...yet I loves it.

    Thats it for now.
  • In the interest of expanding my anime knowledge I decided to try out a Harem show. Looking through what Netflix offers via streaming I thought I might check out Girls Bravo.

Are all harem shows like this? There is the crazy pervert rich kid who is rather amusing but... Other than that are these just geared towards shut-in high school boys?

What's up with the bikini shots full of camel toe yet when they stand up in the hot springs they have nipples but nothing between the legs? I mean nothing, like a barbie doll has nothing between the legs. Is this just an editing issue or is there something else at work?

Speaking of the girls being naked half the time... What's up with the girls ranging from pre-pubescent (or barely pubescent) to 18+? Is it not considered kiddie porn because it is animated and not real people?

I also caught a few episodes of Elfen Lied and have decided that this is the perfect anime for American audiences. It has boobs and blood. Anytime there is blood it is preceded by boobs. What more could American audiences want?
  • Yes, that is what harem shows are like, but they all have varying degrees of explicitness. You can get a show like Love Hina which is relatively light on pervertedness. Then you have something like Kiss X Sis which is the worst imaginable. It's even worse than scary tentacle hentai in my book. Because why the actual depictions on screen aren't as explicitly nasty, the scenarios presented combined with the semi-explicit depictions are a more perverted combination. I can sit through a nasty hentai for the lulz. I can't sit through Kiss X Sis, and similar shows, for anything.

Yes. 90% of them all are just like that. However, the nudity dial often changes in terms of intensity.

You'd think it would be considered as such to most anime fans, but for some reason all that enters their mind is either "EW LOLICON" or "OMG LOLICON SQUEEE!!". Then again, a large majority of anime fandom that I've seen in various pockets of the internet do not like to reflect on why they like anime at all. They just want to keep their watching experience in a bubble and never discuss it; which is why most fans don't know shit about the creators or the designers.

  • The other 10% harem shows that are not like that. The most recent harem show I can think of would be Ouran Highschool Host Club. That one was pretty good.

    Reverse harem doesn't count!

Love Hina or Tenchi are pretty good examples, if old, of the harem genre.
I have heard decent things about Seto no Hanayome, Bakemonogatari, and The World Only God Knows.
Also, Higurashi has harem themes in it, but it's more psychological horror/mystery thriller, with a kind of Groundhog Day thing going on.

Harem is really not my gig at all, but I like some shows like Oh My Goddess, which include a bit of that genre.

I don't know about The World God Only Knows, but I've seen the other two. Thinking about it, both can be pretty much classified as harem on the surface, but I don't really think in either case the focus is really on "who is the main character going to end up with?" While that question pops up occasionally and both series have many characters of one gender surrounding one character of the other, there isn't really an open field because the alpha pairing is established very early and both the male and female in the relationship acknowledge that fact and are pretty much devoted to that relationship. (Edit: I guess this trope is called Supporting Harem, so I guess they do fall in the perview of the harem genre).

Neither series has really the focus on romance or romantic relationships, but has a different focus, Seto being a straight up comedy, and Bakemonogatari moving somewhere around supernatural mystery with sprinkles of comedy and action. It's very dialog heavy though and could also be kind of slice of a very bizarre life.

Two series I would classify directly as harem are Hayate no Gotoku and Kenkō Zenrakei Suieibu Umishō (the former I've enjoyed quite a bit, the latter being a so-so, slightly perverted comedy, nothing to write home about... okay, it's pretty bad). Both have several heroines vying the oblivious main character. In Hayate there is even direct competition over it with some of the heroines directly acknowledging to each other that they are competing over him.

However, "harem series" is becoming ever-increasingly hard to define because the japanese have taken a liking to stuff more and more female characters into the same series because that equates ratings from lonely otaku. One series which is loaded with female characters is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, despite the main character having absolutely no romantic interest in any of the female characters. The show does occasionally acknowledges that this could be construed as a harem and parodies itself in that status.

My parents love Hayate no Gotoku TV, partly because it parodies so much other anime. They are also big into Nichijou. Hayate looked very funny.

But it's hilarious. Bullet time boob physics at its best. You should watch it if you want a laugh. It's fanservice + zombies. And all girls, except the 8 year-old girl of course (who gets no explicit treatment at any point iirc), have appropriate T&A.

    Seto no Hanayome
More focussed on being a comedy, but has harem elements indeed. It's good and entertaining.
    Bakemonogatari
Awesome show is awesome. Though the loli rape's somewhat awkward to sit through. And no, I'm not talking about the sexual harassment in episode 3 or so, the rape's in episode 6 or so. "Season 2" dialled the filth up a few notches, and it is still awesome. A very good show, all should see it. You can argue that it's pretentious and overly artsy in places, but it's SHAFT, so fuck you and watch it.

  • Currently, I am watching Future Diary, Guilty Crown, and I just started Spice and Wolf S2. I was going to get into a few of the new season's shows, but other entertainment leap frogs over it all the time.

So on the backburner are Another and Bodacious Space Pirates
  • Seto no Hayanome
Love that show, because it's so insane and comedic about it's premise. And the one moment it takes itself seriously, is fucking awesome.
    Girls Bravo
Girls Bravo is generally considered one of the worst of the harem genre. Stereotypes galore and really bad messages being passed along characters. And usually the worst types of people who wouldn't exist, with the unmanliest man and the violent tsundere girl. I think it's mostly notable because it was before the need for hardcore fanservice or ecchiness being so prominent.

I think harem is merely a style or potential modifier for a series, but a show can't be based around the concept of harem alone. It follows with the genre veil of a comedy, romance, or drama. Usually the worst are ones that follow under the disguised of a goofball, zany comedy where all the jokes are based around nude hijinks. I think how a show with harem elements is, depends on how it takes itself seriously or not seriously at the right time. Most of them are sadly: "Panties, panties, panties, an attempt at deep commentary over relationships, Deus Ex Machina, boobs, boobs, boobs."

I'm a lot more selective over what show with genuine comedic/harem elements there are. I'm tempted to get into B Gata H Kei, because it's considered funny and isn't based off a lazy, everyone-knows-it scenario. Acknowledging that the girl is dumb and has a messed up mentality on wanting to sleep on a bunch of men, but she wants to start on someone who's the equivalent on vasoline on toast is funny.

  • It's weird seeing Ryker without his manly beard.
  • Speaking of Hokuto no Ken; I was in a bar in Tokyo with a computer hooked up so people can put on music via Youtube or what have you and I put on Massaki Endoh's version of HnK's opening and all the old (30's - 40's) Japanese guys started singing along and were really happy a foreigner knew it.
  • So, I just finished Cowboy Bebop for the seconded time... and I cried at the end of it for the second time. God-damn that show is so good! Personally, I like Neon Genesis Evangelion more that Cowboy Bebop as a whole, but the last three episodes of Cowboy Bebop are the most gut-wrench, sad episodes to me.
  • edited February 2012
Bebop is my favorite show. It was one of those "defining pieces of entertainment" in my teenage life. I remember watching the last disc with my family and then going upstairs and doing the most sit-ups I had ever done, because I was sad and I needed something to distract me from the fact that the show was over and that ending.

  • I'm have Samurai Champloo on in the background as I study Japanese and take notes from various textbooks. It's still enjoyable as it was the first time. The awesome music also helps with my studies.

I love Fate/Zero, especially the fight scene with Maya and Irisviel versus Kotomine. You could always try Unlimited Blade Works since it's just a movie.

Secondly, I marathoned 100+ episodes of Fairy Tail. All I have to say is this: Fairy Tail anime destroys Naruto anime completely. Apparently there's a time-skip in the manga. So, in the very least, Fairy Tail part 1 anime >>>>>>> Naruto part 1 anime.
The second major arc was just really ballsy. Also, someone needs to make a "When I'm Erza". Damn that woman has different armor types.

  • I could watch Cowboy Bebop again. It's time.
