I realize that not many people would agree with this but having been listening to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence lately and I believe this is their strongest work, at the very least compared to anything recently. "Blind Faith" in particular is probably the best song on the album
It helps that this was the album that first got me into both Dream Theater, and metal in general. The nostalgia factor helps for me a little bit, though I do agree that Awake is also an amazing album.
Well, if they can top black clouds and silver linings with their next work, then we're up for a mean machine. I just wish they polished the lyrics more.
Although, now that I think about it, they have always been influence by the bands they toured with. Zappa and Bigelf? May this signal a return to an earlier sound? Then again, they also toured with Opeth (having Mikael growling during A Nightmare to Remember.) I'm intrigued.
I can't seem to get away from Skitliv. So, I'm looking for some recommendations for other similarly dark and twisted doom stuff. I want something with an incredibly massive and gloomy sound. Maybe from the more post-black bands; I'm not too familiar with anything other than Krallice. Anyone got anything interesting to throw my way?
Sorry about being extremely late to the party, but what is Sunn O)))?
Music so heavy your speakers will develop their own gravitational pull. Music so black no light escapes. So deep that their musical pressure crushes all who enter their realm. See the diagram further up on this page for details.
EDIT: OK, so I just found out about a band called October Falls. It's a Finnish solo folk/black/ambient/dark sort of project. It's pretty interesting sounding, but I have yet to actually find the album. You can listen to a sample here.
There's two roads to heavy, one leads to Candlegoat/Bathory by Sunn 0))) (best Sunn 0))) track IMO.) The other leads to Shitstorm by Strapping Young Lad, holy shit have I never heard so much anger put into a song.

The only thing I have to say about that is: meh. Awkward choir and random guitar is just not for me... Maybe I'm not seeing the artistic beauty. Or lack thereof. I'll still check out some of their other stuff, though. It all sounds the same to me...

Hmm, try listening to it with headphones, let it's dark arms embrace your eardrums with the semisweet taste of darkness. It's like a really fine wine, best if served alone, or else everything else will pollute the experience.
On SunnO))): If you listen to it and don't immediately(and by "immediately" I mean after tento fifteen minutes of listening) "get" it, then it's probably not for you.

Have you ever listened to Wolves In The Throne Room?

I did try, but not for that long. In a way I kind of really want to like it, but it kind of feels like there's nothing there to like. Though at the moment I'm on a school computer and though I can access the forums, I cannot get on the Tubes of You. I'll try again when I get home.
I can send you a song or two if you have Skype/AIM. In my opinion, best way to enjoy a Sunn 0))) song is while walking alone at night, it was a surreal experience for me.

Definitely get Wolves In The Throne Room. Those guys were inspired by Weakling, whose album Dead As Dreams pretty much kicked off that whole scene. Altar of Plagues and Nachtmystium are also really good, but nowhere near the gigantic, pummeling force of Weakling and Wittr.
Awkward choir and random guitar is just not for me...
There is certainly nothing random about Sunn's guitar work. Every note has it's purpose, and they are probably the most purposeful metal band out there, apart from Earth. You need to try to get out of the pop music headspace when listening to Sunn. It's much more like listening to a piece of classical music, where notes may sound random when taken out of context, but are revealed to be structured and purposeful when the piece is considered as a whole.

I have both, but I only use them every once in a while. Username: IijanGin I'll try it! I am convinced that I need to enjoy this for my life to be complete.

As you said, I need to get my head out of the "pop music headspace." I've been gradually listening to heavier and more socially awkward (In my high school world) metal, currently I'm on bands such as Despised Icon and Oceano, much thanks to my cousin Anneke who is a definite metal head. She introduced me to BTBaM (<3). But anyway, it sounds like it's epic, but I can't hear it.

I think the live version of this song kicks so much ass.
And some more symphonic death:
I like SDIT, but I don't know that I'd call it their strongest. Awake is a pretty tough competitor.

Sarcasm not appreciated.

Sad day for metal.
