  • I've been rocking Lexicon something fierce these past couple weeks.
My god, how did I not know about this. This stuff is fantastic!

The mixtape is very Madvillain ( w/ Lord Quasimodo) inspired with some Odd Future thrown in.

  • Didn't Madlib actually produce one of Murphy's tracks?

FlyLo & Madlib collaborated on production for "Children of the Atom."

I revisited Killer Mike's "R.A.P. Music" after skimming it back in like July and then sleeping hard on it. It instantly snagged a place in my Top 50. Mike's bringing some old-school ATL flow like he did on his OutKast collabs, and the beats on this album are really aggressive. El-P's production here is similar to early Dead Prez; lots of squelch and bass hoovers, but with some violent funk kick to it. A refreshing change of pace from most of the spacey, cough-syrupy stuff dominating indie rap right now.

  • It's a good one. El-P and KM are doing a follow up EP soonish.
  • There's two hip-hop albums which have been on heavy rotation for me lately. One is "Good Job!", a best of compilation by japanese Hip-Hop group Rip Slyme, which I bought sight unseen. Though I don't speak the language (yet), I like what I hear.

The other is in a language you may not speak either, since it's by austrian Hip-Hop artists Texta who rap in german, or rather their native Linzer dialect. Been listening to their 2003 album Blickwinkel.
  • I want Dopethought and Worth to be the next big thing.

  • aw shyit

  • I never quite got Deltron 3030. It didn't seem to actually say anything, just kinda random words that I would have liked were they in a more meaningful order.

    Also, new Witness track.

Not as good as Dear Taylor or Girl Song, but still some of the best chill-hop out there.

    lulz

  • I guess its time to be that indie foreign a bit random post guy. Check this out though, swedish posse laying it down over their own swing beat. Amazeballs indeed.

I guess it's time to be that "get on my hipster level" guy. Movits is really good. Found them two or three years ago through /r/listentothis, which seems to be the most reliable and varied source of good little known music right now. They're not indie strictly speaking, here in the US at least, because they're distributed by Comedy Central which is a Viacom subsidiary, but I still buy them because they're great. They usually get filed in with electro-swing, which I think is a misnomer. They're really too much of a departure from electronica to be electro-swing, though there's no doubt that they were influenced to some degree by Caravan Palace and such.

Man, you don't even speak Swedish.

Also, I can't wait for Despot to drop an album.

  • Well, Movits has something to the instrumental. Deltron was just samey futurist hip-hop blah.
  • Whaaaaat, no way. Dan the Automater is one of the most talented producers around. I still find myself humming that bassline in the opening track.
  • And Kid Koala is an amazing turntablist.

  • He really is. Have you head that blues album he put out?
  • I have not, but I'm looking some songs up on YouTube now.

I agree, but not because of Deltron. I fell in love with his work with Emily Wells in Pillowfight. Deltron was just him trying to find his ground.

Oh my God, Kid Koala is amazing. I played Twelve Bit Blues for Mr. Greg when he drove me to school one day, and he went nuts for it. I don't understand why that album didn't go platinum.

I suppose if you want to label music by their US distribution channel, you could se it that way. I would argue that they are indie indie because of their origins. But whatever, its a nit-picky discussion regardless.

Especially the new material wich goes even further away from swing roots.

Im not sure about the caravan palace connection, I would probably argue (based on interweaves and a common musical heritage) that they have much stronger origins in a mix between tradjazz and swedish mid 20th century troubadours. A good examlpe would be something like Wrejswiiks sambainfluenced material.

Also, I think the words comment was regarding a different post?

  • Indie is shorthand for independant. We can argue over what size makes a label no longer indie, but Viacom is pretty obviously not indie. Using the term to refer to anything else castrates the word into meaninglessness.

And, yeah. Walker's giving me shit because I don't like Deltron 3030. The words comment was from a post regarding that.
  • Not liking it is okay, thinking it's meaningless and samey is silly.

Greg, if you want something interesting try "Hard Road: Restrung" by the Hilltop Hoods. It's their entire Hard Road album, but instead of their previous beats being played in the traditional way, they're being almost entirely backed by the Adelaide Philharmonic orchestra.

Here's the title track as a sample -

Oh mans, that is so good and right up my alley. Cannot stop listening.

But, that's not why I necroed this thread. I necroed this thread because I just discovered my new favorite Jazz-hip-hop group, from right here in Boston: Tiger Speak

The unfortunate thing is he hasn't come up with anything new to rap about. Nor has he improved his rapping skills. The production is really good though.

Me neither, but bruh needs to write faster. He wasn't joking in DR's "Power": "Bars sixteen and pregnant, verse come every nine months."

Speaking of DR, the NYC rappers are my favorites right now: Kool A.D., Dap, Heems, Lakutis, Despot, MMFeXquire, Action Bronson, A$AP Mob. Dudes are pushing the game forward.

Ev, this is your shit: Despot, DR, AND El-P.

Here's another excellent collab, with my favorite Bronson verses ever:

It's solid and I enjoyed it, but it's also really bloated and I don't particularly see myself revisiting it.
