"You know, it's an argument he has a good chance of winning, and all of a sudden we (Republicans) have co-ownership of a bad economy," McConnell said. "That is a very bad positioning going into an election."
McConnell said his first choice was to reach a good compromise with Obama.
Short of that, "my second obligation is to my party ... to prevent them from being sucked into a horrible position politically that would allow the president probably to get re-elected because we didn't handle this difficult situation correctly."
Well, at least he's being up front about this being all political maneuvering on their part.
Moody's began reevaluating the US credit rating today. S&P and Fitch are expected to follow suit.
The Republicans have already fucked this up; it's beyond saving. We're officially into "damage control" now, and they still won't accept an offer that would give us a surplus of trillions. But hey, at least the democrats won't control their new third-world tin-pot superpower!
I remember watching The Daily Show covering Turkey and its default.
They mentioned Turkey's debt, a few other countries' debts, and then the US was on top for most debt. It was a pretty good presentation, because it put what those really big numbers mean in the context of actual problems people will face. Can't readily find it on a google video search.

I am VOLUNTEERING to give a teeny bit more of my money to the stupid government so the US doesn't fail and drag the world economy down with it. Regardless of whether or not you agreed with the actions that got us in this mess, we all have to band together and clean it up. It's like your roommate setting the couch on fire: you can't just stand around and say "It wasn't my fault, why should I help?" Okay, you are against dealing with flaming couches. It is a hassle. However, you and the rest of the people you live with need to help take care of it regardless of ideology, otherwise the whole house will burn down.
On the matter of Murdoch and his relation to Fox news what effect might this have on the republicans?
Sadly, I don't think it will affect American media much. Fox News is a right-wing echo-chamber and fearmongering machine. Their audience WANTS them to confirm their tin-foil hat bullshit, and that's exactly what they get. Murdoch has pretty much proven that NewsCorp is about as good at journalism as this mechanic is at making good decisions:
Fox news has nothing to do with republicans so nothing :-p
Ah did i get the wrong end of the stick? I'm watching a program on him at the moment and it talked of his involvement with Fox. I had been lead to belie that Fox news was republican in its views and assumed the link. I should qualify that I have a vague knowledge of US politics.

Your impression is not uncommon, even for US citizens. I think the distinction being made was a subtle one (or else I didn't quite get the Cremlian's response either)
God that is a good question. We have some small generally laughed at nationalist groups but mainly its a cluster fuck in the center. As far as I can discern the Conservatives have moved to the center, Labor have moved to the right and the Liberal democrats just get ignored. On top of that you have the usually squabbling and bickering. Strangely though for a country that has strong roots in Christianity religion generally stays out of the picture save for the odd random remark.
I'd argue the closest thing to the Republicans in terms of politics is the British National Party. Fortunately, the BNP is an honest organization that is quite open with it's racist views, unlike the republicans who continuously deny it despite how blatant it is. As a result, the BNP gets nothing but laughed at by respectable people, while the Republicans Party has tons of power and corporate links, putting them in the perfect position to drive the country into the ground.
Yeah the BNP has sort of slipped off really. For a while they were quite a big thing and had a fair old amount of coverage. In reality they are just a bunch of jackasses. They have no where near the level of influence that the Republicans have. If anything they are sort of a political joke in Britain.
Yeah its not the clear cut lines that you get in America. Like I said everyone is sort of moving towards the center. Murdoch generally made sure that the press is in line with the party spiel, as with Labor. It was however right in its leanings.
At this point he's just a sad, sad pig squealing to get his slop back - he's lost the only thing he's known for representing and he's not getting it back.
Bigots descend on Albany to protest gay marriage. They appear to be mostly religious and a large portion also appear to be minorities. I want to see some signs there that say "I don't fucking understand anything" and "Everybody has to do what I say".
My wife's uncle died earlier this year, leaving his third wife and two adoptive children.
In related news, during a recent discussion of gay marriage with my father-in-law, I told him I would accept his anti-gay viewpoint when he married his brother's widow in accordance with biblical commands.

I mean, numbers are scary.

It would be ever so helpful!

No offense to pigs everywhere, of course.
