I'm contemplating for the first time ever not going with the water Pokemon as my starter. I really dig Tepig and I really am unenthusiastic about the otter.
So, my first impression based on the hour or so i've played this game is this: it doesn't solve any of the basic, fundimental problems Pokemon has had since Red/Blue/Yellow, but it's the shiniest coat of polish it's had in a long time.

Why do you not want to bask in the majesty that is a samurai otter?

I've found out something interesting - If both your belt and your PC is full, and you manage to catch one of the legendaries, you get a chance to catch it again later in a special area. Also, in that special area, there is a chance - unlike your normal encounter with it - that it will be shiny. How true this is, I've no goddamn clue.

Someone said something about Grass starter being hard mode. You know you can get a pokemon of the type that's strong against your rival's pokemon in the Dreamyland thing before the first gym, right?
(I don't remember if that was here or twitter, so...)
The game on the first two gyms is really generous about telling you exactly where you can go to get Pokemon that are strong against that Gym.
True, but I'm not complaining (at least for the second gym), as it introduced me to one of my favorite new Pokemon, Timburr. There's just something to love about a short guy who smacks things with a giant wooden beam bigger than he is, while flipping it casually in one hand. (Gurdurr, the evolution, on the other hand, is a monstrosity, but that's another story)
Litwick and Blitzle are my two favourite Pokemon now. I'm sorry Rotom and Lucario, but you have been bumped down to 3 and 4. Deerling is probably at number 5.
I am really not finding this game harder than any of the others. If anything, it's not much of a challenge. I haven't gotten stuck at all thus far.
Nuzlocking?
It's basically a Pokemon permadeath run. A Pokemon faints, it's dead and you can't use it anymore. The other main rule is that you are only allowed to catch the first Pokemon you run into on a new route.
