Travelling too far in the Nether can crash your game when you attempt to gate out. Which, along the right line of thinking, leads to some total Fridge Horror.
I have discovered a problem with the Woodlands biome. All the trees are placed so close together that you can wipe out vast swathes of them with a single misplaced flint spark. Such as when I tried opening the door with a bit of tree in front of it.
I'd be careful about going through any portals on saves you care about. Sounds like there're still a few nasty world-deleting bugs that need to be fixed.

It killed my inventory once already. I just went in to harvest some precious Glow Dust.
Also, here's the deal with glow dust. Once you get 9 pieces of it, you can craft it into a glowglass brick (I think PC Gamer called it australium, but I don't think it has an official name yet). Glowglass is opaque, cannot be recovered, and isn't durable, but lights better than torches or lava. Use INVedit to get piles of it without dealing with the Nether; the item code for dust is 354. Since it's not part of INVedit's recognized item list (like the compass), you need at least one piece in any given spot in your inventory to dupe it. The same should be assumed for glowglass.
I went through a portal, and on my way back it took me to a cave far away Also, I used up my only pickaxe, so now I have to start again from wood so I can build a compass and find my way home.

It's back again. Never mind.
Playing on 98.167.247.212:25565 (Billy Mays' Oxyclean Server.) which actually has a Billy Mays avatar on it.
XD I kid, I kid.
More waiting!
The downside is that when I get home I will be too tired to play Minecraft.
Three minutes later, horrific tortured screaming.
Scariest shit I've ever played.
EDIT: Hahahaha, Minecraft.net just crashed. Thanks for letting us get the jump on it, Cheese.
