OH MAY GAWD ITS BEAUTIFUUULLL
It does strike me as interesting how so many people in the fandom have a particular idea of what episodes are best and which are worst. It feels like that is the accomplishment of a good show, but it still made me think about how the fans can be quite diverse with their opinions. The group brought up several issues I had not considered like the hidden depth with various characters, so it felt good to listen.
Just curious, does anyone have a favorite and least favorites for Season 2?
Favorites: Lesson Zero, Sweet and Elite, Baby Cakes, The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000, Ponyville Confidential
Least Favorites: (Oddly enough, the three by Merriwether Williams) Mysterious Mare-Do-Well, Hearth's Warming Eve, and ESPECIALLY Dragon's Quest.
It was definitely interesting to see how I agreed and disagree which episodes were better than others. I think this show definitely has something similar to the Death Note problem. If you don't know, the Death Note manga changes drastically halfway through. People really don't like the second half. Honestly, the second half isn't bad. It's better than a lot of manga out there. It's just not nearly as awesome as the first half. The relative perspective makes it seem worse than it is. Like how Napoleon seemed shorter than he was because his generals were extra tall.
I do like some episodes less than others, but even the episodes I like the least are enjoyable, and have good qualities. Pinkie Keen has a very objectionable moral, but awesome hydra and slapstick comedy. Mare Do Well is kinda meh overall, but balances with Rainbow Dash fan club action. Last Roundup, which is very forgettable and is mostly a big chase scene, has the I Love Lucy parody and great Pinkie/Rarity interaction.
Sonic Rainboom, Dragonshy, and Discord pt. 2 are still the best episodes.
Party of One is still my natural favorite episode. Reading Rainbow (whatever the real name is) is still a favorite. Dragonshy is excellent, most Fluttershy-centric episodes are pretty good. I think the final summary of Pinkie Keen was improperly worded, but the story was excellent and there is a point there that can be made... but is way too difficult for a children's show. Honestly the Season 2 intro and finale were both pretty awesome as well. And everyone knows I love a party cannon.
My favorites from S2 were probably Hurricane Fluttershy, SSCS6k, Last Roundup, and Sisterhooves Social, not to mention the season opener and closer. The ones I liked the least were MMDW, Cutie Pox, Hearth's Warming Eve, and Baby Cakes. I'd probably still put SFS and Best Night Ever from S1 on the top of my overall rankings. But I've liked just about every episode, even my least favorite, and find them hard to rank.
While some of my opinions vary wildly with the GME podcast, I honestly feel like the most divisive S2 episode in the community is May the Best Pet Win. There are some people who hate that episode and put it right at the bottom, while others (like me) put it somewhere in the top half. I honestly wonder if it's a spillover effect from MMDW, which also features jerky RD. Secret of My Excess seems pretty divisive as well. Some people think it feels "off" relative to the universe and doesn't do enough with the extended King Kong reference; others love the Twilight gags and the Spike/Rarity development and Spike's introspection at the end.
Edit: it's kind of amusing that Scott panned Last Roundup, while it's on my top list, while Nuker liked Baby Cakes, which is on my bottom list. That tells you something right there.
Why don't people like Hearth's Warming Eve? That was one of the best! So much lore! Thinking in a chimney. Pegasisisisis.
I actually like HWE on aggregate, just not as much as the other episodes. I will say that the gingerbread house joke in the cold open is the only facepalm moment in the whole show for me. There are a half dozen jokes during the play that also do too much setup or just feel forced. And I think I was sensitive to jerkiness and out of character moments following MMDW. Even though the play obviously should get a pass on those issues, it was pretty apparent elsewhere. I'm starting in on a S2 rewatch now, so I'll see if my opinion changes.
The news on plushie maker WhiteDove (lauren faust herself bought one the plushies) being taken down due to a cease and desist by Hasbro was such a sad thing.
I dont blame hasbro, and everyone knows Hasbro does not wish to create or enter the whole plushie business, but having to protect their IP and being unable to turn the blind eye when things are officially reported to them (due to a particular action of one DA user or Troll, who was adamant in bringing WhiteDove down), just sucks balls.
At this point, this simply confirms that the haters can simply go around targeting creators and shutting them down, even if they cater to a market or community Hasbro has no intention of going into. The previous pony videos on youtube that got taken down as well was a similar situation. As a creator myself, it worries me a little, and my heart goes out to Whitedove.

Oh, and a supercut of ponies saying "pony":
Oh, and high-quality fan animation:
and cool Twilight art:
and a nice PMV for The Massive Smile Project:
A pretty good month, on the whole, though unfortunately not even one of the videos mentioned was new to me.
