I just hit level 16 today, and so far, I'm loving the game. My one issue though is that I'm playing a straight mage, and I kind of want to experience the melee combat. Has anyone had experience yet with playing a battlemage? I don't want to get to level 30 and find out that battlemage is terrible.
I've been doing one-handed weapons + destruction magic w. heavy armor. It's pretty fucking awesome. I am, however, only level 12 and relatively new to Elder Scrolls games, but I know for sure that battlemage is fun as fuck for me.

Considering the pace I've been leveling up at in this, I have to ask: What's the level cap? How hard do enemies ramp up as you level? I hope it's not like Oblivion, where you can walk through the woods outside Anvil and get ambushed by a minotaur and two trolls at the same time.

From what I can gather, there's no hard level cap. Todd Howard said in an interview that it's theoretically possible to get to around level 70, but most players will see 55-60, or something like that.

I read that the enemies don't level up with you like Oblivion, but that they have a level range, which is set when you discover the area the enemy is in. So an ice troll at Whatever Keep might be a 25-35 Troll, and whatever level you discover that keep at, the trolls level is as close as possible to yours.

  • Someone please test for me:

What happens when you bucket-head an NPC and then shoot at them with a bow from far away? Do they suddenly know where you are? Or are they still blind?

    Sincerely,

    Bucket-curious
  • So how many people will quit Skyrim tonight and start Halo?

  • I'm feeling quite proud of myself. I've read through this entire thread over the past few days and have managed to NOT buy SkyRym.

Wow that's worse than the Lusty Argonian Maid.

Ditto. It helps that I'm in the Old Republic Beta (not just the weekend one) and have been enjoying that.

I have no doubt that a year or so from now, I'll buy the Skyrim GOTY edition on Steam for some insanely cheap amount of money and I will smile and congratulate myself on my self control.

  • I'm not sure I'll be congratulating myself a year from now, when I'm too busy flying my jetcar and fiddling with a holoprojector to play a game as ancient as Skyrim.

  • This video accurately describes my character now.

I'd say gamefly was the way to go but they just sent me Skyrim instead of arkham city so I'm pretty much a sad panda
  • I realized today that had Skyrim been released a year ago, I would have pre-ordered it to get on the ground floor with the construction set. This year, however, I'm already drowning in self-imposed projects so it hadn't even occurred to me until I saw Curse gaming offering a cash prize for mods.

I will gladly enjoy it when it drops to ~$40 or so. Maybe even later. For right now, I'm better off saving money and focusing on current work.
  • I played Skyrim on my laptop all weekend on low graphical settings since my desktop was broken. Fixed my desktop today and now running Skyrim on ultra high. The game looks surprisingly good even on low graphical settings, but it looks pretty amazing on ultra high.

I was going to do a little test next weekend to see if my laptop can run Skyrim at all. It should be able to do the minimum. If it runs, I might buy it.

I'm just going to leave this here.
  • I'm surprised at how well the game runs compared to Oblivion. I'm running the same PC specs that I did when Oblivion released (bar from the jump in graphics cards from an 8800GTX to a 240GT) and it runs much smoother in my opinion.

Hell, I'm running it on an 8800GTS and it looks and runs great.
  • So, I happened upon a Stormcloak camp. Since I was on the fence about their whole rebellion thing, I decided to talk to the man in charge to see what they're all about. He proceeded to, right to my pointy-eared face, say that elves suck and that the Stormcloaks will cut through the empire to kill them off. I ended the conversation, stole his horse, and rode it off a cliff.
  • I killed three dragons today and was generally feeling like the cock of the walk when I thought to myself "Self, dragons are pretty much the badassedest things ever right? Right. So those mammoths over there should be cake right? Right!" Boy did I get disillusioned quick.

I've got a bit of a technique with giants - Sneak attack them with my bow as much as possible, and keep peppering them till they get close enough to hit me. When they wind up for the hit, voice them with unrelenting force and smash them back 60-70 feet, and keep hitting them with arrows till the voice recharges.

Well, except the one time I voiced one off a cliff. See you on the down-low, big guy.

  • Yeah, the staggering shot for archers is pretty much The Business(tm). What I do for giants is command animal their mammoth and let them duke it out. I pelt in arrows in the mean time and then continue pelting my mammoth-friend to kill it before the command wears off.

Wow that's worse than the Lusty Argonian Maid.
It must be a popular book - It's 200 years after Oblivion, and I'm still finding copies of The Lusty Argonian maid(volume 2) around the place. So it's either the greatest classic of literature in Tamriel, or the slowest publishing house ever.

  • I feel like I'm leveling too quickly. I've only just hit Whiterun after doing that first quest that nets you Unrelenting Force and I'm almost level 10.

Pretty god-damned big spoiler, not about the main storyline, but it's a pretty big deal in the lore.
I just got one of the Elder Scrolls! I tried to read it and it burned my eyes and my character put it away. Then, I was contacted by a Daedric Lord and asked to steal the blood of elves.
    I love this game.

(Also, forum note, you can search the forums and it will search inside of spoiler tags and show you their contents without warning.)

  • So basically... game of the year. Can't believe how much better than Oblivion this turned out.
  • Apparently it was a terrible idea to attack that guy who leads you through the tutorial. Apparently he is an immortal god of tunder and he hunted me across the map.
