@Ganty - You really didn't think it would support more than 1 U controller? I like asymetrical multi just as much as the next guy, but by limiting the system to 1 U you have just destroyed an entire game type. 4 swords, Crystal Chronicles, pretty much anything you can imagine that 4 seperate screens could do.
Cant be true!!!!!
Well, I just assumed that the controller didn't really have a lot of processing power as its own device (it's just an extra display for the console I guess?), and I'd already seen the videos they show off explicitly never showing two being used. I also can't imagine there would be many situations where 4 would be in the same place, it seemed to me more like it was an extension of the console rather than being a controller. Atleast with a GBA or DS you have a reason to be carrying one around, to have 4 Wii U controllers in one place just seems far less likely. Maybe.
And also, I guess I'm just more accepting because I would literally never have an opportunity to play those kinds of games with four separate screened controllers, NEVER.
Wii U: Packs in with 1 controller and... Then what?
I'm willing to bet that the #1 reason for this is that it would drive the cost of the Wii U over $300 and/or result in them not making profit right away. I wonder if the Wii dropping off and the 3DS not meeting expectations meant they were willing to push the Wii U sooner than they had originally wanted.
Apparently the Vita got a RAM lobotomy to make it's price point viable as well (which isn't surprising since Sony, who usually tries to make money on software, got burned HARD with PSP piracy and probably want to make a profit on the Hardware this time round.)

Fair enough.
I too assumed that the U was going to have very little processing power behind it, which is why the conclusion I drew was that it would be CHEAP. And if its cheap, you can easily get 2 per system, much like the Wiimotes. Nintendo are turning down free money if they can't sell you additional U's, which is why I am doubting this rumor.
If I can make a gross generalisation, Nintendo is still a family brand, hence for kids. Parents will buy the Wii U for their kids/family and said kids will want to play at same time.
Creating a system that right out of the gate only supports only one of the exciting new controllers is... dumb.
I'm calling BS on the 1 U controller. Ive only seen it mentioned on one site. Wait and see I guess.
@DevilUknow: I meant pack in 1 U controller and THEN what do parents buy after that? If it only supports 1 controller... Can't exactly buy another. I wasn't suggesting they pack in a 2nd, that would be silly.
I just can't imagine that screened controller being sold as an extra peripheral to use when you have a friend over. I find it even more difficult to imagine someone spending time developing a multiplayer mode that requires four of those controllers in one place. Which is likely to be an even rarer situation than someone having 3 friends who each own a GBA. Its hard to believe if it WERE the case that more than one could be used, that Nintendo would not show atleast one video clip suggesting such a possibility.
Edit: Here's a quote from the press release:
Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote™ or Wii Remote Plus controllers.
If you could use more than one of the new tablet controllers, then that's the sentence where they would say so.
So the Wii U links to the Wii Remote? So then that means we can get Christal Chronicles Wii, they just still won't make it. We should remember that they could already do all the gaming possibilities this offers with the DS, but didn't. Let's wait for them to reveal the killer game like, say, an X-COM that is just like the original X-COM but with a more obvious interface and with 4 branches of NERV that are making different things and the only way to know what they are making is for that player to show it to you, y'know, not that I've been thinking about that or anything.
Well this is interesting. I guess Miyamoto acknowledged that Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass sucked all kinds of ass, but you have to wonder if he's serious.
"We're considering our options with maybe two screens," Eguchi told Kotaku, who said he considers multiple New Controller games to be "an interesting idea."
Still looks like the 1U + 4W setup is going to be the go though for asymmetrical goodness.
Nintendo is too fail, too closed, and too Japanese to ever allow it to happen.
I don't disagree, but I was thinking more along the lines of Xbox doing this, which could be possible.
My friend and I were just talking about Xbox and why they haven't put out anything in regards to the handheld market.
I stated that they probably thought about it, but seeing Nintendo as the giant monster of that market along with Sony coming up in the world and the casual gaming on Android/iOS, they probably would feel late in the game.
Who knows? He predicts that will be their next reveal. If it were true and they allowed your XBLA purchases to be downloaded on their handheld, I would totally down for that.
The handheld market is closed at this point. The DS has almost entirely won, with the PSP making just enough of a dent to be profitable, and apparently to gain a successor. I don't see who a Xbox handheld would be sold to.
Another source implying that it may only support 1 U.
I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, I play most of the 1st party Nintendo games + a few PS3 games that interest me (Dead Space, Uncharted etc). Point being, that I work and can afford to buy games and the occasional new system if it interests me.
You know what interests me? Mother Fucking 4 player private screen games! Because I CANNOT play these anywhere else.
It's early days.. But if the 4 screen private data (4SPD? What do you call this?) games are not the focus of the system.. Then I'm just not that interested at this stage. When they push out 4 or 5 of their flagship games, MAYBE... But for now, I'm losing interest fast.
Did anyone else catch the part in the Nintendo conference where they announced that there will be a limited series of Zelda anniversary orchestra concerts around the country later this year? So want to be there.

If only it was true.

Insta-purchase.
//still remembers PS3 launching at over a thousand bucks per console with no games down here.
