  • The Heroes of Might and Magic series remains my go-to example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Though HOMM3 is probably still the best of them.

Outside of simple battle mechanical thing, the way the games handle their story, characters and world differs quite a bit. Morrowind is one of my favorite examples of how to do open world story pacing well, while Skyrim is a perfect example of how to not give a fuck about it.

That's the part that's different. The not-game parts.
Just fuck you. I'm not getting roped into this Scott Rubin madness train once again. I quit.

    Well done.
  • I agree with Scott's statement. I consider Bethesda's games immediate buys because they keep improving and delivering the same core game play that I've grown to love.
As much as I'm a giant Mass Effect nerd, if Andromeda does not have the same game play as the original trilogy it's not on my roster.
  • I'd be more into Mass Effect if it were just a complex visual novel.

Yeah I don't think anyone in their right mind should be buying Bethesda games "immediate buys".
Most of them are single player and middling to great at the experience based on what you enjoy. I played through Fallout 3 and was pretty much done with all open world RPGs, it's good to know I don't need to buy any further iteration of the game.

I look forward to playing Doom 4 when it becomes a reasonable price.
  • I would say they're immediate GOTY buys. No point in buying them now, and then having to spend the same amount 6-10 months down the line once they release all the DLC.
  • They do have the season pass which gets you all the DLC, but yeah, I think you're better off waiting.

I'm wary of those, ever since borderlands and it's "You get all the DLC! nah jokes you get just barely half" season pass.
  • I wait till there is a GOTY edition and wait a few months for the first steam sale. It's cheaper, it doesn't have bugs, all the DLC, so a complete experience and all the modders have put out a ton of suff as well. Since I usually pay single player games once and don't usually look back it's good that everything is there for me.
  • I've only had one major Fallout 4 bug thus far (a full soft-lock), and the game is quality enough that I want it right now. It is enough of an iteration on the formula to feel different. The settlement system is essentially Fallout Shelter in 3D with benefits to the other parts of Fallout gameplay. Also, Power Armor is so beyond amazing.
  • The thing about the DLC for Fallout and other Bethesda games is that they're generally kinda garbage. Even if it was just unfinished content it's still not very good content. I had played a couple on Fallout 3 simply because the summer I was playing that game a lot I was just so bored. Beyond the added guns and whatnot from New Vegas I don't think I touched a single DLC area. I think I bought the Skyrim DLC when it was cheap during a sale (actually I think it was cheaper to just rebuy the game) and I don't think I touched it at all.

When I played Oblivion I did this quest to recover the Crusader's armor and restore the Knights of the Nine. I thought it was actually a main-line quest. Awesome hidden castle out in the woods. Found out later it was a DLC. That place was my home base, and I used that equipment almost always. Had knights following me around and shit. Everyone got the fuck out of our way.

I think that's another reason GOTY edition is best. You don't even know what's DLC and what's not. The open world is just more full of stuff than it was in the original.

I had 30 people in and out of my house over a 24hr period last weekend, and not one person even though about putting Smash in. Seriously, how times have changed.

A month or two after Smash came out, I did hold a college reunion at my house specifically to play that game, because Smash was our thing, and that event was a big success. After all this DLC is out, maybe I'll have to hold the second annual reunion.

  • We were too busy playing Runbow and board games.

Seriously though, my Smash game is garbage - it's a game I should like, but in practice I'd rather play Street Fighter.
  • If I had a larger 3DS I'd probably play it more, but I freaking hate playing it on my "regular 3DS"
  • Literally every reviewer who has a podcast is states how boring and played out Fallout 4 is. It's Fallout 3 with a slightly updated engine where they still forgot to fix all the bugs (e.g if you look at the back of the mouth of the character, it's missing textures and you can see the scenery behind the character). You can still get stuck between chairs and the wall.

Yet reviews they are giving the 9.0 and 9.5 reviews.
  • Idle Thumbs seemed generally positive on it this week, but at this point, everyone on that show is a developer/designer as their main gig.
  • While amusing, that graph is dubious at best.

what makes you think so? PornHub releases stuff like this a lot.

That doesn't mean it's accurate by any stretch. Corporate sponsored research and analysis for the purposes of a)Getting a newsworthy or "Highly Sharable"(aka viral) result, and B)Marketing is nothing new. And really, that's the purpose of Pornhub Insights - Marketing by creating viral content by manipulating data they already have.

Folding. It's going to become part of Rooster Teeth.

Ah, alright. Folding the brand, but moving operations under a different company. Regular old acquisition and shuttering shit.
  • I bought the new Battlefront. It's not a fantastic shooter, but holy fuck is it fun. It's everything you could possibly want from a Star Wars game, it feels like you step into the movies. Best part? No single-player campaign bullshit! It's just you, a bunch of your friends, and all the blasters/speeders/AT-ATs you could want!

It's funny how different people's tastes can vary. I have absolutely no interest in a multiplayer-only game, even if it is Star Wars. If it had a single-player campaign, I'd probably be interested, but without one, no sale.
