Hurricane Sandy

  • Seriously, local news is disgusting. It's freaking out my mother. Hope to convince her not to keep it on all day. (N Jersey)
  • Sadly it was a very sturdy white oak that fell on our power lines and my van last year. The trees around here are all in bad shape, it's a wetland area so the ground gets sodden and I think root systems are rotting.
  • So far, nothing. Looks like there have been some wind gusts becuase a lot of leaves are down in the parking lot. Also, the water is rising up on the edges of the rivers. Coney Island and Rockaway will probably be completely flooded and the ocean will meet the bay. But as of right now, it doesn't even seem to be raining. It did rain at some point, because the ground is wet.

    EVERYONE PANIC
  • 6% of my town is blacked out already. The wind isn't even strong enough to knock leaves off trees. The tractor trailer ban just took effect.

My wife received an email saying she still has to report to work if scheduled and that her hospital ID will get her on the highway if state troopers stop her. Luckily she has a scheduled vacation this week since April.
  • I'm hoping a tree will fall on my saab so insurance will right it off and give me a check.

The wind and rain just started to pick up here. I think it's starting...
  • Has the center of the hurricane made landfall yet?

    Nope

  • Kinda nippy here in Louisville but clear skies.
  • The unfinished building next to our building is making a constant, clattering, straining racket as the wall supports buckle and bend under the strength of the wind. A few cars are driving over the Queensboro bridge in both directions, but very few.

The wind is very strong, and it smells like the sea.
  • "Sandy" is such a weak-ass "S" name. This should have been named Sauron.

"The eye of Sauron turns its gaze to Philadelphia."

I mean c'mon guys. How is a New Yorker supposed to take this seriously?

Well, the East River has already flooded the park in LIC. I'm a little further inland, so it's not sea-like here.

One of you should set up a webcam so we can experience the Rage of the Storm live. A good drinking game could be made out of this: Every time a car goes flying, drink.

I am making a time lapse with my GoPro out the window. If I webcam you will see it is truly boring (for now).
  • They keep closing more and more of the FDR due to what I presume is flooding.
  • The ultimate plan

  • Hmmm
I could point a webcam until the power goes out...

Stay tuned for a Google Hangout.
  • Strong winds here in Boston. When I brought Roxxy out into the yard to do her business this morning, I kept her on a leash so she wouldn't blow away. No rain since yesterday, though.
  • I watched a live feed of that last hurricane that hit New Orleans for quite some time while working/etc. It was quite amusing.
  • I can't really get a good view with a webcam. It doesn't have sound (no way I'm putting it outside! ;^) ), and the noise/wind is the only interesting thing.

The building next door is going apeshit. It sounds like an angry wizard is dying in there.
  • Wizard on a hilltop shooting lightning?
  • It's raining in Rochester.

    Yep.
  • Oaks usually a good tree, my intuition would be that's less likely to fall on you than a giant pine tree or something. Although Nuri is the one that knows trees better than the rest of us IIRC.
NOOOPE. It's the hardwoods with broad, shallow root systems that are at biggest risk. The pines have a deep taproot that goes WAY DOWN and anchors them hard. Not likely to fall unless they snap. Oaks have a spreading, surface root system that pulls right up when the ground is saturated; they don't have to snap because the whole tree falls over!

Don't you know they alternate between male and female names? Sauron is clearly male, GUH. Come up with an evil S name that is female!

Well at least I know the right person to ask about trees. :)
  • Could be worse, my parents have Bradford Pear trees in their lawn.

They will be lucky if those trees fall over and die. They smell HORRID in the spring when they blossom. Ugh. I want to genocide those trees.

  • Hey Muppet, I just saw the news that the CT highways will be closing down tonight.

People I talk to keep bringing up Irene comparisons. They have a point, and at the same time, don't. For the NYC metro area, the winds will be about equivalent to Irene (which was a letdown versus what the storm would have brought, had it not unexpectedly weakened. Rainfall will actually be a good deal less than Irene, by maybe 3 inches or more, and the soil is not so wet.

There was tons of inland damage from Irene b/c of wet soil and 11" of rain bringing down trees everywhere. A week of no power for many b/c of downed lines. Sandy's threat is more directly for the coastal properties.

What Sandy is really bringing is the water. High tide landfall, full moon, slow moving storm combining with other big storm both pushing water in the same direction = water higher than the area has ever seen before. NJ barrier islands were flooded last night, before the storm was even close!

The path keeps shifting further and further south. Went all the way down the NJ coast and now they say Atlantic City landfull. That place is fucked.
