Finally got around watching this. Just finished the third elimination episode. I really should have started to watch this earlier, though now I can watch bunch of this at fast phase, which is good and fine.
I think one of the reasons Maki was able to do such good art is that he copied the first panel into the last panel and then made small mods. He only had to draw 2.2 panels! Saves time for the rest of the detailing. Of course, the other artists could be doing this too, so I'm not sure how much of an advantage it is.
I agree that Amy's comic was a cop-out. I think she was ready to go home.
Scott's avatar bothered me right from the beginning because all the lines come together under his chin:
I wrote at the time:
"Personally I preferred the second photo, mainly due to the weird shadows on your chin. There are too many lines converging on one point (line of chin, jacket, shirt, beard, throat, adam's apple) and it makes it the focus of the photo, or at least of your face. The second photo has a nice highlight under the chin to break it up. It makes it so your neck isn't a massive expanse of bright skin the size of your face too."
So yeah, tangents bother me a lot. Not as much as Mike though!
I have been a CAD desiner for a while and tangent is a term we use for something tangent to a circle... And that's it. So I was familiar with Tangent in that application for a while, when I ended up in art school and started hearing illustrators yammer on about it. Come to find out that it meant more than just the geometric idea of a line eminating from a point on a circle perpendicular to the radius which intersects that point.... Or whatever the proper definition is.
But I kinda liked my understanding of tangent because it was more correct.
A term I picked up from parachute design that I think is cooler, is confluence point. But it has less of a ring to it ):
Youtube seems to hate me and doesn't want to let me see the latest episode. It doesn't let me watch many other videos ether, but I'd really like to see the elimination episode, although I already know who is going to drop.
You know, for the first time, I actually was thinking today "oh man when is the next episode" as opposed to completely not caring about the schedule and watching 2-3 episodes at a time when I got around to it. Now that there are less people, and we know them better, I'm starting to actually look forward to Strip Search.
They did show the go-kart thing in a trailer before, but completely forgot about it until today. I'll count it as a breather thing. Let the artists do something exciting and not be stuck in the house all the time.
Also, am I the only one who finds it weird that among the six girls who started, now Amy is the only one eliminated?
Yeah, this is pretty obviously a way to let the contestants relax for a bit before more stress. My main production criticisms:
1. Track too big. They should have taken a 30-45 second track so you could cover it with fewer cameras.
2. Use the cart numbers to keep track of racers, not their self portraits.
3. If the final race wasn't about who came in first, but who got the fastest lap, why did they worry about who goes first to last in the qualifiers? And why show who was ahead during the race if it was a lap time that won it?
Thankfully it was all just a bit of fun, so doesn't really matter.
I am tempted to go and do my own comics for each of the challenges. Anyone want to face off? The problem is I have to mentally trust myself not to think ahead to what they will be. I almost would have to wait until the show comes out, get someone to give me the words, and then make my comic. Then after 90 minutes I can watch the episode
I would totally do this with you. Getting art done in a speedy manner is probably my weakest point right now (When I sketch I get really, really scribbly) so that would be amazing practice really.
We wouldn't even have to use the prompts from the show. Get a third person to get two words through some random method, and find a way to stream our drawings so that the FRC can be our judge, juries and executioners.
We would probably want to plan this soon, and decide what day to go on, and figure out how many people would be interested. Apparently, these karts go up to 50 MPH, and min age is 15 years old. I suppose maybe a post on the PAX Prime page would be best to drum up interest.
There are 3 group packages, depending on how many rounds you want, and there is a 10 person minimum. This can be found on the group events/parties section. Ro and I could probably set up arrangements to bring something to BBQ, and just have everyone pitch in a couple of bucks. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so the day after PAX would be out. Maybe the Wednesday or Thursday before PAX? You also get use of the BBQ, tables, and chairs. $60/person for instruction, timed practice and final event. $85/person for same with a semifinal before the final event. $110/person for same with a heat race before the semifinal. Prices include head sock and daily license fee.
It looked fun and all, but today's episode had none of the things I watch Strip Search for. No art, no Mike & Jerry, not even really artists generally being awesome or funny.
I was hoping that it was going to be something like making the next challenge them doing art from that kind of fast perspective, and that racing was to give them references for drawing something that they might not normally have known how to drawn. Looks like that's not the case.
It was apparent to me from episode one that the women were stronger than the males. I've been pleasantly surprised by Maki, especially of late, but I didn't sense greatness in those with testes.
Especially that Alex dude. Was glad to see him out on day 1.
Yeah, Alex didn't seem like a bad person, but I think I would personally be annoyed by him. He gave off that vibe of forced extroversion where someone tries to be outwardly friendly to everybody with lots of effort.
I think Tavis can hold his own, a match between him and Maki would be a tough choice to call until the work is done.
Probably Maki.
If I was better at making comic jokes I would be starting a comic right now with the hidden potential motive to be on a potential future season of strip search.
But it's a lot of god damn work... Let them do it.
I think everyone on that show has/had serious potential and skill and they will all hopefully kick ass.
This was a pretty good challenge. It was really funny how they basically made the Penny Arcade company into a set of shit disturbers. Khoo just fucking with the contestants, Brian and Erika stealing merchandise, Kris haggling.
However, I find it weird that they had a metric for deciding the winner, rather than a decision making process from the judges afterward. I think they money and tips could have been a factor there, but interaction with people, how they dealt with Khoo's BS, whether or not they identified or how they handled people stealing stuff, etc. I really wonder if nobody noticed the thievery, if they didn't think they could call some sort of con security, or if there wasn't even that option available.
I like that they gave a bonus for winning an elimination challenge this time though.
Erika and Abby are up. I think I know who is going home.

I need to find this race track since it's in my state. I would go all out.
Next challenge looks most excellent.
It's like 15 mins from Jeremy and myself. It's 40 minutes away from Seattle.
