I also would have picked the same people.
  • Did they announce what Katie won from winning the big challenge?

I don't think there is a prize for winning the big challenge besides immunity from elimination.

  • Oh ok. It was from last episode of Katie winning. She got to choose who her partner was first.
  • Y PEOPLE NO PICK KHOO?!?!?! They fell for the lies again! Didn't that happen at the Omegathon as well?

The dude is super competitive and great at games of all kinds. I'll pick him first in just about any gaming competition unless there's a known specialist available.
  • I did sorta see what they were talking about with him being bad at doubles. While he was a fierce player, he seemed to get in Lexxy's way a couple times, as well as her getting in his way because he's too pushy. He's so competitive that I think he can ignore his partner, which is why he's not the best at doubles.

However, the idea of him being the worst is hard to believe, because his raw talent should outweigh that.

    It was self declared worst.

    LIES

Another thing I don't know if anyone mentioned before. All the dudes who survived have beards. Bear power!

  • Bears have beards also if you consider any facial fur to be a beards, even baby female bears have beards. Badass! They're just like dwarves.
  • Probably the best place to put this, because the story itself is just fantastic:
  • I always love a good "Ringer is brought in but discovered" tale. Great video.
  • Video was great, but man, that company is full of assholes for doing that. Super rude.

He's a super good Ping Pong player for sure, but he's really really bad at doubles. Like, if you look at his footwork, he's really used to jumping all over the place to get the ball - in doubles, you are *required* to let your partner take every other shot and get out of the way when they do. Watch his games in this episode, he's really bad at not running into Lexxi or tracking where the ball is going between his shots, which are both skills that are critical for doubles.

For Katie in particular, she said that Levin was her choice because they had a good dynamic in the earlier challenge. That dynamic itself is super key for a good doubles team, which is likely what won them the tournament.

  • It's kinda hard to argue that she should have picked Khoo when she won by picking somebody else...
  • The thing is that by forcing the players to alternate hitting the ball, it's more about weakest link than strongest player. If I played with a professional player on my team, we would miss every other shot over 90% of the time. How good they are ends up not mattering as much as how bad I am. Katie won the singles, so whoever she was with she probably still would have won assuming all the PA staff were better than all the artists.
  • The problem is if you don't any rule like the alternate hitting rule, the game would quickly devolve into a contest between the more skilled players, which is most likely the PA staff (particularly with Khoo who is hyper aggressive in his Ping Pong style). Thus you wouldn't actually test anything about the actual contestants of the show.

Doesn't seem to be a problem in double's tennis. If one player is stronger, the opponents just always hit the ball as to attack the weaker player.

  • Yes, but the court is bigger, in table tennis, a single player can basically cover the whole space behind the table with little to no disadvantage, in tennis, it's a whole different story.

Maybe doubles ping pong should use a bigger table? Doubles tennis uses a bigger court.
  • BTW, the rule that you have to hit alternatively as a team is also part of official doubles table tennis, at least if this site is to be believed.

A novel idea but then you have to create and sell a whole other table for the purpose. It's just a natural limitation posed by the sport.

  • Doubles Ping Pong is suuuuper different than doubles tennis. The rules are actually way more restrictive on who hits where, and to whom. Khoo's play style is very much about it not mattering *where* the ball goes, so long as it hits the other side very quickly.

Source: I just took a class on doubles Ping Pong earlier this week, ironically the day before this latest episode came out.
  • Hate to break it to you, but that's not at all ironic.
  • Doubles ping pong is literally just a game of "whichever team has the single weakest player loses."

    *conveniently

  • Doubles ping pong is literally just a game of "whichever team has the single weakest player loses."
Isn't that also true for singles anything?
  • The Tennis court for doubles is only larger by about 3 feet on either side. A ping pong table could work the same way with an area marked off by a stripe like in Tennis, and then the whole table is used for doubles. The main problem with that is the scale though, since a tennis court is much, much larger than a ping pong table. In tennis, one player usually plays mid to front while the other player plays mid to back. Standing on the ping pong table would be bad.
