If you can't connect to the internet anyway, there's no-one to stop you pirating, but no way to get piracy tools which you will need when discs add updates.
I was still on board with XBOX One until they announced pricing. Now I'll almost certainly be looking at PS4 as long as I can run all the same streaming video clients that I do now.
Either way, I won't be upgrading for another 1-3 years most likely.
They'll have the final say, but Sony won't be providing them with any APIs or services to make it easier for them. They'll have to roll their own (or get it from another third party, anyway). Basically, it'll be just like games on the PC.

Sounds like Sony is referring to the one use codes we have now from certain publishers.
For example when I bought fallout 3 game of the year all of the dlc was on disc. When I bought borderlands game of the year the game was on disc but the dlc was download codes.
I don't know the freshness of this quote but here it goes...
"Further commenting on criticism of its new Xbox One policies, Mehdi said: “I think it’s fair to say there’s a segment of consumers at this show in particular who really pay attention, who are very passionate about all aspects of gaming, and that we listen to closely. In a broader set of community, people don’t pay attention to a lot of the details. We’ve seen it in the research, we’ve seen it in a lot of the data points."
Soooooo... The solution for people who don't like the whole always on intenet thing are told to stay with an 8 year old, unsupported console and now they are saying most of their sales will be because people are stupid and/or ignorant? Wow, Microsoft. Just... I don't even.
He's actually saying "There is a relatively small number of loud and pedantic critics, but we market to a larger audience who won't care about this smaller group's complaints", and he's actually probably correct.
Wait...did he just say this essentially: 'Well, we have data that said you all wouldn't be paying attention, and most people don't, so...yeah.'
tl;dr - yes.
Even if everything he's saying there is correct, and I believe it certainly is, you do t SAY that stuff out loud.
You're admitting that you are making moves that will be in the companies self interest far more than the consumers best interest simply because your potential customers are uninformed or moronic. You're putting it in very plain language. The whole reason marketing-speak and jargon exists is to, in part, conceal certain things.
At this point they should slap this sticker on the side of every XBONE that looks like this.
I just can't wait until Christmas when lots of kids get Xbox Ones and can't use them because their internet is too shitty or their TV doesn't have HDMI.
We'll likely never hear about it. How would we? They have no/terrible internets which implies they don't know how to use it properly or they'd have better interwebs.
Also, the HDMI thing is probably not going to be a huge issue dimply because the technology is so pervasive now and most people update their TV approximately every 5 years or so now.
Looks like I will be ditching my two 360's this weekend and all games and peripherals except for my wired 360 controller.
My daughter wants me to get a PS4 when they come out and to be honest, I have not touched my 360 in weeks. All my gaming has been Wii u and PS3. Even though I have a stack of 360 games I have not played (some in shrink wrap) I find that I don't care.
PC is where my hardcore gaming lies and without a gold account a 360 is broken. It has all this potential but they lock it behind a pay wall to use it.
My PS3 does all my media stuff and does not require a monthly fee to use. Granted I pay for PS+ but I get long term rental games every month! They just gave me Deus Ex and XCOM!!! I'll pay the monthly not required fee if it gets me discounts and essentially free games.
Right now I am talking with local friends and a game store. I want to get the most money out of my two 360's and assorted games and peripherals.
I'll probably wait until the XB1 and the PS4 come out, then get a 360 and a ps3. Then I can Forza and Gran Turismo to my hearts content and take advantage of all the used games people traded in to be able to get the newest generation.
Yeah I sure hope they do some serious price drops soon. I still want a PS3 for at least the exclusives and I'd like another Xbox in case mine craps out, but fuck if I'm paying $200-$300 for an obsolete console.

I got a used PS2 slim at a indie game store for $25 or $35. It hasn't become a collector's item just yet but it's probably good to grab it before it does.

It think that is what Sony is referring too.
