I've only ever seen the movie and it was like a French art film trope from the 60s and I haven't looked back, although it's fun to weird out friends with it occasionally.
Is paid Crunchyroll any good? Like, if I wanted to watch any given anime from the past 5 or so years, am I pretty much guaranteed that they'll have it? I'm considering dropping Hulu and picking it up instead.
Thanks to Rym tip I am subscribing to Funimation. Crunchyroll has come a long way since its early days it is very worth it. Now, you get also unlimited manga. Hopefully soon they also get a reading app.

I don't think you need to pay Crunchyroll to watch most of their old shows.
Yea, the good thing about crunchyroll is that you can just look at their catalog at what they have to offer and even watch most of it and pay when you want the newest shows and better quality.
My friend has gotten more into anime lately and he has been mostly watching free stuff off crunchyroll, which has been and will be plenty. Although it makes suggesting any older anime difficult.

If I end up using it a lot it would be worth the money to get ad free and 1080p. I just want to make sure that there's enough content to bother.
I was very close of giving up on this season of Anime but I gotta say that "My love Story" is very promising. I will try to give Rinne a try ( When was the last time that Rumiko Takahashi did something good and short?)
Watched episode one of Kekkai Sensen. Location is New York city which becomes an epicenter of multi-dimensional shenanigans. City is renamed to Jerusalem Lot? And Jerusalem is trapped under a dome of mysterious mist, that nobody outside can enter or folks can get out of. Hero is down on his luck and broke. He also never opens his eyes. Which is revealed later why. Shit happens and he winds up joining a team of other good guys. The main villain's M.O. seems to be to cause mayhem for his own personal amusement. Baddy wears this metal plate that covers his eyes.
His HQ is a fancy dining room hall with a wall covered in mirrors. Which he monitors the city from. The leader of the good guys kind of reminds me of Beast from X-Men. Smart dude, but he is very hands on when it comes to fighting. The good guy team uses blood to power up their abilities. Except for the main hero who has 'god eyes' which were given to him by a extra-dimensional god who may have done something to his sister. But she must be fine because the hero wrote a letter to her at the start of the show about his adventures. I'll watch a few more episodes to see where this series might lead.
I'm watching Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma. This show is so close to being awesome, like if Studio Trigger made Iron Chef. The writers actually understand the different methods of making food and having the character talk in interesting, compelling ways about it. It's just weighed down by awkward, pace-breaking, fanservice far too much.
This show is like getting an amazing rib-eye steak served with inedible, over-salted fries.
Ore Monogatari!! or My Love Story!! is really, REALLY adorable. I'm loving how it's playing out and the main character is a blast to watch. They also move things relatively quick for a romantic anime, which is a nice change of pace. Love the opening theme as well.

I also think this is the first time that Chu-Chu has expressed an emotion other than indifference or satiation.
This isn't the most cerebral show ever, but it's freaking hilarious. We've been enjoying it.

For example, this is a reaction shot from the 60-chapter mark:
