  • The opener song is cute also. The band Chatmonchy was here last spring for a Girls Rock Camp concert at some cafe. Wish I would have went.
Either they are tiny, or those guitars are fucking huge.
  • Kuragehime is definitely win.

Togainu no Chi, on the other hand... well. It's got the fujoshi reek.

Basic story: It's post-WWIII Japan. Akira is a disillusioned youth who participates in a game called Blaster - think Fight Club, but for young street punks. When one of his Blaster opponents dies, he's charged with murder and doomed to spend the rest of his life in prison. However, a secret organization makes him an offer. If he'll join an even more srsbusiness fighting game to help them topple a drug cartel, he'll earn his freedom.

The pros: The story presents some interesting questions. What was World War III? What is this weird game that this drug cartel runs, and what is its real purpose? What will really happen to the person who wins? Will Akira have to fight his best friend, who entered with him? What is Akira's messed up background, anyways?

The cons: To find out the answers to the above questions, one will have to endure a show that feels like a horny seventeen year old girl's twisted sexual fantasy. The main villains so far? A depraved catamite who wears a boa and masquerade mask over a suit, and said catamite's "dog," an abused and presumably unwilling S&M gimp who is forced to crawl around on all fours while holding a horse's bit in his mouth. Did I mention he slobbers when aroused?

    .....

In real life, who cares how two consenting adults choose to enjoy themselves? But when a show aimed at teen girls eroticizes rape and torture, squick. And when the whole story and situation of the show is so clearly contrived to make this eroticization happen, double squick. Really, they should have just made this a porn, and not tried to aim for "formula bishounen show, but edgy!"

Looks like Bakuman and Kuragehime are the only good things out this season. >_>
  • Is Togainu no Chi from the creators of Speed Grapher?
  • edited October 2010
Nope. Speed Grapher is from Gonzo. Togainu no Chi is from Aniplex. It was originally a BL visual novel by Nitro+chiral.

You forgot Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.

I haven't checked that one yet. I'm glad it's not trash!

Yeah, a degree of that is to be expected, given the source material. However, I'm having a growing problem with BL stories (and anime in general, I suppose.) Namely, they are less story than gimmick - empty reads, or empty watches, where everything is contrived for the aim of titillation. If it's an ero game, or a porn, that's fine. That's what those products are supposed to do. But where are the great romances? Works that say something significant, or at least have some sort of compelling core to them? Works where same-sex relationships are given a context in the fictional society of the story, and are handled with a modicum of realism? It's easy for anime companies to continually pander to a giggling demographic of teen girls going "hee hee, guy secks!!!" but there is room for so much more. There have got to be stories that have matured along with my demographic, stories about homosexuals that don't boil down to simple seme/uke stereotypes, stories that don't involve depraved catamites draped in boas, stories that don't try to tell me that rape, torture, and exploitation are "hawt."

Where the crap is Giovanni's Room, but animated or drawn? If someone knows, by all means, tell me. The closest I've seen so far is Ooku.

It's quality is highly subjective. But, if you like Gainax craziness and the old Cartoon Cartoons, you'll probably like P&SWG; if you accept it for what it is.

    Basically:
Oh, it is trash, but it'sglorioustrash.

So it's essentially (I'm stealing this from Scott) the least smelly poop?

Nope. It's glorious garbage. It's like that episode of It's Always Sunny where Charlie finds a sword at the dump.
  • Galaxy railways ultra cheap DVDs.
  • Princess Jellyfish is really cute, but I'm having trouble relating to the characters. I think it would be really cool if they explored the transvestite angle rather than they "lol these girls are otaku" angle.
  • Highschool of the Dead.

Zombies, tons of gore, tons of fan service, and a bad-ass, fat geek.

Everything I could ever want in an anime.

OMG, I just had this conversation. I am getting more and more pissed off at the whole Yaoi thing. Agree 100%. Also, I went with two gay friends to a panel at NYCC about Japanese comics for the LGBT reader, and the panelists spoke a lot about this type of problem. At the end, I asked a question: "I'm going to say something controversial: I don't really care for pure romance stories. What I would like to see is an adventure story where the protagonist just happens to be gay. With the semi-main streaming of yaoi and yuri do you think we will start to see more gay characters outside the genre of Yaoi/Yuri romance?"
There was a huge applause. People want these stories (Actual Stories!), so where are they?
  • People want these stories (Actual Stories!), so where are they?
The people who want them are the extreme minority of nerds who actually show up to such a niche panel at a convention. Most just want titillation. It sells.

If you want it to happen, make it yourself. If people really want it, it will become popular, and you'll be set.
  • Violence Jack is aptly named.
  • Watched all of what's available so far for Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto. The more I watch it, the more I am convinced that this is a remake of Revolutionary Girl Utena crossbred with Gurren Lagann
    You caught my attention!

I think you two gave me a panel idea. I also, agree you both.
  • Trigun marathon this weekend.
  • I recently saw that Fruits Basket in on instant Netflix and am giving it a go. I never seen the dub and it's fun to have on while I craft.

I honestly don't care for the dub version, but it's tolerable. It kinda irks me how they put the wrong emphasis on the wrong syllable when pronouncing names, but I'm just super sensitive about those things.

The series is still fun to watch, but like Ouran they condense the series into only 26 episodes while the manga goes on.
  • Just saw Durararara!!
    Awesome!!
  • I recently saw that Fruits Basket in on instant Netflix and am giving it a go.
    Oh man, Fruits Basket made me cry D;
I really don't know why though..
  • Gundam 00 is really, really good.
  • Gundam 00 is really, really good.
Just wait until you see the Gundam with arms coming out of it's kneecaps. The show will go from being really, really good to being Gurren Lagann levels of awesome.
  • So how gay is 00? Is it just the Loveless character designer setting off my yaoidar, or is it really slashy?
  • So how gay is 00? Is it just the Loveless character designer setting off my yaoidar, or is it really slashy?
It's really not slashy at all unless you intentionally read it into the show. Most of the characters have actual love interests that are of the opposite sex.
  • So it is just the character designer.
  • Gundam 00 is really, really good.
I just started watching the second season of this last night. I'm really enjoying 00, I'm also watching the Original Mobile Suit Gundam at the same time.. I think I'm going to try and watch EVERY GUNDAM show.
  • EVERY GUNDAM show.
    Good luck with that.

Gundam Seed Destiny, Gundam Double Zeta, G Gundam, you're in for some hurting.

    G Gundam
Am I the only person who found G Gundam to be absolutely hilarious? Sure it's terrible, but it's entertaining because it is so terrible.
    Gundam Seed Destiny
What is this Gundam SEED Destiny of which you speak? There was only 1 Gundam SEED series.
