B2K is basically thus - Four new maps, some new vehicles to go with it, eight new weapons(which you do have to unlock, but it's not hard, I've unlocked almost all of them from normal play - it was actually a clever idea, it's not just "Get X kills", the assignments encourage teamwork and PTFO'ing rather than just shoot-dude-get-toys.)
You also get a new game mode called "Conquest Assault" where the other team holds all the points, and your team has to battle their way in, and either take all the points, or wear the other team down to zero points. However, you still have to take the points - otherwise, your tickets will tick down at about one a second, on top of the tickets you lose for people dying.
And that's about it. The maps are good, the guns are cool, the vehicles are nice, but it's no big deal if you're missing them until the next round of sales. Maybe if you have an unexpected extra windfall, you could buy it outside of the sales.
I don't need to play these games for the same reason I don't need to own a kitten. I get the edited highlights of everyone else's best experiences without all the hassle.

That's like saying I don't need a sports car because I watch Top Gear. Living vicariously only gets you so far, at some point you need to live it for yourself.

That's not quite accurate. If I'd never driven a car before, and watched Top Gear, I would see your point. However, I've played plenty of first person shooter games, and car shooting games, and driving games, and flying games, and sniping games, etc. I know what it is like to live it for myself, as just today I played CS and NS. But I don't have the time or energy to play Battlefield enough to experience all the things I see in these videos.
So, along with the various patch notes fixing and changing various things (HORNS IN JEEPS YES), they added an interesting feature.
Now, instead of grinding out the unlocks for everything, you can just pay some extra money, and unlock everything, right away, or pay less money and just unlock all the shit for one class, or class of vehicles.
Was it really that unexpected though? They did the same with BF:BC2, I'm pretty sure it was planned all along. Most people playing it for a while now have already unlocked all the good stuff. Some people just suck and will never be able to catch up if they don't buy the better guns.
I've never really found any of the guns "better". Pretty much every assault rifle works about the same as the AK-74 and the M16. I like the AEK-971, but I frequently go back to the starting rifles also.
The assault is a killing machine from the get-go but the other classes really need the unlocks. E.g. The M249 is the polar opposite of the Type 88 so having them gives you much better odds in their respective environments thus having both to switch between is a must.
I would like to add that I managed my first sextuple kill with a single piece of C4 and have been developing ways to push through on 64 man Metro.
How I lived without smoke for the M320 is beyond me. Smoke down, a cheeky hand grenade and then hit the deck to mow down what's left. Repeat a few times and you're good.

I wouldn't be surprised, and it would also explain why they went after booster servers so hard.
Though, Some people also just don't have the time for BF3 to unlock everything in the first month, rather than just sucking. Some people didn't buy the game until recently, or won't buy it until some point in the future. And let me tell you from my BFBC2 experience(since I didn't find out about the "buy the unlocks" business till people mentioned it while complaining about it for BF3) that being stomped relentlessly because you're shooting nothing but rainbows and marshmallows. There's an unlock that removes a full quarter of all damage, for example, so even if you are good, and do get the drop on someone, you're still going to get stomped, because the second they get damage, they'll spin around and lay into you. Or the exploit-ridden GOL, with high damage, perfect accuracy and zero scope sway - so if you see a bushwookie around, odds on, they'll have the GOL out.
If I'd have found out about these shortcuts sooner - I even looked around for that sort of thing, and didn't find it - I'd probably not have almost completely given up on playing BFBC2, but as it is, I refuse to waste more money on it.

EVERYONE used to roll with the SCAR, until it took a nerf. Now, most engineers roll either SCAR or G36 for a reason. The M98B is objectively better than the starting rifle in every regard but for the fact it's bolt action rather than semi-auto. The L85 and FAMAS are both deathrays, even before you put the foregrip and a laser on them. Not to mention, it's also about the other unlocks - stuff like the Soflam, the MAV, the EOD bot, the vehicle perks. If you're rolling guided missiles on a tank, you're going to wipe the guy without them, because if you've got a bro with the SOFLAM, you don't even have to see him to hit and kill him.
Some of it is situational, sure, but if you can adapt and use a better weapon for that situation, you'll beat the guy that doesn't. And even then, there are some weapons which are generally better all round, if you have it and the other bloke doesn't, he dies.
I will pay for the jet upgrades. At this point jumping in a jet is suicide unless you have some of the upgrades unlocked.
OH! That's another good change they've made - You now get flares unlocked by default. So you fare a wee bit better.
Where is a Type 88 better than a M249?
Longer range fire. It's more accurate and does more damage and suppression per round. In most maps, it's superior to the M249, unless you're going to run up and get in people's face all the time.
IR scopes used to be the shit until they got nerfed, now they are near useless even in low light.
I took about a month off from this game and while the unlock advantage is not as bad as BC2 (magnum ammo/body armor) it is annoying to jump into a game where the entire enemy team is level 45+. Some of this is mitigated by the ability to grab gear from the dead but that doesn't help if the dead guy is part of a team that smokes you as soon as you kill him and then defibs the bastard.
Jets are suicide machines at this point. All it takes is one good pilot and air supperiority us achieved. One of the guys I play with is like that. After he clears the air no one else flies.
Gun upgrades are not that important to my play style but items are. Unlocking javelins while your buddy has a SOFLAM allows you to target all vehicles.
Don't even get me started on drag rounds on Metro...
Oh shit, yeah, IR Scopes used to be INSANE, especially in open areas. I've not had the chance to try them after the latest patch(which tried to fix a bit of the previous Over-nerfing), though.
And you're right, gadgets are mighty important. Especially with the AT buff in the latest patch, a squad in communication with soflams and javelins are super deadly. The MAV can change your whole game, especially in any outdoor rush map, and the EOD bot is fantastic for keeping your vehicles in top shape, and in rush for sneaking around the side and arming the crate.
Frag rounds have thankfully had a nerf in this patch, reduced fire rate while using them, and the damage adjusted. They're still good, but not ludicrously so like before.
I don't think many people here do, I know Geo does(or was it PS3 for him, eh, one or the other), but I don't think anyone else does. Sorry dude. There is an active and mostly decent reddit community that hook into a lot of BF3 on the 360, though.

Reactions have been...Mixed.

...Guess I should have got B2K when it was on sale.
So far, it's George, Yosho and I bro-ing up, and we're doing well.
