  • How about Unobtainium? Earthing were willing to commit genocide to get it.
Ray-Ban seems to have an ample supply.

Also, I believe the proper term in this case is "xenocide."

I present Solitary Mass, From Leeds. Also, the guitarist with the long dark hair on the extreme left (spends half the video out of frame) Is my old housemate. Who also happens to be a Dentist, and one of the most chilled out, mild mannered dudes I've ever met, and is currently taking care of my kittens. The drummer at the back is a london boy, who I always call either Jack, London, Or southern filth.

I would so love to hear them playing an acoustic version of Hurt, that would so be awesome.

They did a version of Metallica's Orion. It came out sounding like an incredibly clean and furious Barcelona street-musician jam.

And here's the full 7 minute tour de force:

  • I believe that has been posted before.
  • I saw Sleep play Holy Mountain last night.

  • So, lately, I've been listening to more and more post-black infused black and/or death and/or blackened death metal. This has led me to give more thought to exploring noise stuff a bit more.

Sunn O))) isn't my thing. I've tried to like them - I want to, really - but it just doesn't do it for me. I think it's maybe the combination of noise and drone that kills it; the music doesn't move enough, though it is plenty heavy.

However, I've heard about this band called Portal, from Australia.

It's pretty cool. It's much more aggressive than Sunn O))), and the music is pure hell. I'm really digging this sort of thing a lot. Triptykon, Skitliv, the newest Dark Fortress...they all have this experimental/noise quality to them.

Can you guys recommend anything else like Portal? Keep in mind that I need something a bit more aggressive to keep my interest; Skitliv and Swallow the Sun are about as slow as I like to get, at least as far as more ferocious metal is concerned. The only drone I've ever liked is Earth, and I think it's less drone-y than most other stuff.

Do you like Lightning Bolt? Their most recent album carries a lot of metal/sludge influences.

[Edit] I know this is not strictly what you wanted, but aggressive metal with noise/experimental influences that is not drone or black metal is a tall order to fill.

I haven't liked any of their stuff that I've heard, but those two songs were pretty decent. It lacks a certain ferocity, though. I like a good bit of ferocity in whatever I'm listening to - some kind of fierceness. I like it when my music roars. The noise elements in those two songs were used nicely, and I really dig the sludge. These sound more like sludge rock with a noise influence. But, it's also closer than anything else has been yet.

I'm definitely less of a fan when noisy music has no traditional musical structure. I find that I like some traditional structure to form a foundation, and then I like noise on top of that, peppering the music.

That it is. I'm already listening to Skitliv, Triptykon, and Nachtmystium; I'm going to be adding Portal to that mix now. I love the stuff so much, and I want a whole lot more of it, but it seems really really hard to find.

I can think of plenty of noise rock bands that fit the descriptor, but lack the ferocity you're looking for.

    That's more like it.
  • I gotta say, the resemblance is a little off-putting. You don't work behind a red door, do you?

Nothing. That's actually a pretty cool song.

I haven't really actively listened to CoF since Midian. I've been told that they're actually still good; perhaps I'll look into this more.

Last.fm just introduced me to a new Finnish supergroup: Barren Earth. They feature the vocalist from Swallow the Sun, and the rest of their members are drawn from current or former members of Moonsorrow (drums and guitar), Kreator (lead guitar), and Amorphis (bass and keyboards).

They're pretty neat. They sound a lot like old Amorphis, and a bit like Opeth.
  • I don't know if this is metal in the strictest sense, but GOD DAMN
  • It always makes me happy to see this thread get re-revived. Got a lot to listen to tomorrow. Been really digging Diablo Swing lately, though you (should) already know about them.
  • Yes, metal is very sturdy and has a great deal of applications.

Yeah, Necrophagist feels really overproduced and dry. I admire their bassist's technical proficiency (that bass sweep-picking is crazy) but stylistically they're pretty meh.

Also, I hear their frontman is a HUGE douche. But, this is metal, what else is new.
