Just saw Episode 3 today...yeah...crazy shit is starting to go down. The revelation about Amon, has turned him into a truly frightening villain. Actually, the most surprising thing is how they are not beating around the bush and getting straight to the point; and that is major plus concerning my opinion of this series.

  • I need to get this out of my system: OMG, I WANT A FIRE FERRET SO FREAKING BAD. THEY'RE LIKE RED PANDAS, ONLY SMALLER AND MORE STREAMLINED. I NEED ONE.

    That is all.

The show is only going to be 26 episodes (12 in season 1 and 14 in season 2), so if they didn't immediately jump into the story, it would be a serious problem.

Actually that isn't quite true. Nick has given DiMartino/Konietzko a possible blessing of extending the series in the future. Who knows if that'll happen though? If it happened, I don't know if I'd be happy about it or not.

I ALSO WANT A GODDAMN FIRE FERRET!!!

  • Anyone else feel really, really meh about the third episode? I want to like it, but... I'm worried, guys. This show might suck.

Dude, what show were you watching? I think it is both premature and short sighted of you to say that, there are only 3 episodes out at present. When the inevitable Equalist/Bender Civil War occurs, I'm all over this shit.

I honestly think that with the way this show is shaping up, it might be better than Avatar: the Last Airbender.

Of course, fire ferrets, magical steampunk gangsters, and pro-bending may be colouring my impressions heavily.

I don't blame you, that stuff is very enticing.

Watch the series again before you say that (in particular the Season finales).

I literally just finished re-watching the series today.

I thought the third episode was less exciting than the first two, but it still was far from bad.

It's also worthy to remember that pretty much the entire first season of the original Avatar is fairly underwhelming.

Portions of it definitely were, but there were some damn good episodes in the first season as well. They needed to spend a lot of time building up the world and the central conflicts, and that was going to take a lot of time. Legend of Korra has the benefit of having all of that world building already in place, they just needed to update it with the technological advancements.

By no means am I predicting that it will suck, I'm just worried that it might. While the episode had some cool things in it, it felt like the plot jumped kinda quickly and awkwardly ("we need money" to "who cares about that, Bolin's working for the baddies" to "Bolin's been kidnapped" to "he's stealing bending"). Plus, Amon's backstory of "I was beaten up by a bender ajd now I'm butthurt" doesn't seem like it will be nearly as interesting as Zuko or Eiroh were. TLA was proof that these guys know what they're doing, though, so I should probably just trust them more andvenjoy the ride. I'm certainly not dropping the show now or anything, just a little worried.
  • I feel like the whole "I was beaten up by a bender ajd now I'm butthurt" backstory is a front. Amon definitely has some ulterior motives going on behind that mask.
  • Amon was just beaten his father was also killed by a bender
  • Fire ferrets aka red panda ferrets aka Pabu put a BIG smile on my heart. I'm enjoying it more and more. I'm happy that Naga has his own Momo (Pabu).

I like how the animation quality is similar to that of the original's finale episodes. It's probably because the first series did well and they probably have more funding.

I agree with Li, in regards to Amon hiding something about his past. I feel like it could be the son of Azula or something. That would be crazy!

I feel that this series is a bit darker than the first one. Just the vibe I'm getting.

Also the scene where Mako goes to the Air island and Jinora & Ikki start blabbing then Korra earth bends them to the sky, priceless.
  • The core intended audience has gotten older since the last air bender so they are going darker to still try and hit that group, kinda how Harry Potter "grew up" with the fan base.

Also, I don't think the show will suck. Yes they have had a heavy amount of exposition set up over the first 3 episodes, but I think it will get into the proper pace after episode 4 or so. For me personally there is still a lot of stuff I have seen that I like and once the show finds that proper pacing, I'll probably like it more than the last air bender. I'm excited.

Well, the original series did have bits like Aang weeping over the withered corpse of his former guardian, surrounded by the broken remains of dozens of men that he must have assuredly murdered in his final moments, having betrayed his pacifist ideals in the minutes before death.

So far, I don't think we've seen anything as gruesome as that close up of Gyatso's skeleton with Aang trembling on the floor nearby.
  • I forgot about this for a second, but Mako is totally Batman.
  • Mako and Bolin's parents were killed by Fire Benders.
Amon's family was also killed by Fire Benders.

EVERYBODY IN THIS SHOW IS THE GODDAMN BATMAN.
  • They're totally setting it up to show how two people can turn the same bad circumstance into drastically different ends.
  • I feel like the whole "I was beaten up by a bender ajd now I'm butthurt" backstory is a front. Amon definitely has some ulterior motives going on behind that mask.
I'm thinking he's some kind of Bender himself. Maybe controlling someone's chi (energy) is a specialized form of Fire Bending. Although Tenzin mentioned that previously only Avatars had the kind of ability Amon displayed. Maybe Amon is some kind of aborted Avatar. A descendant of a Fire Nation family displaced from power by Aang is a strong possibility.
  • Well only aang had been known to be able to spirit bend so it would make sense for him to make that assumption. Either that or one must first be able to bend the elements in order to bend the ability to do so. Maybe it is something new entirely. Who knows?
  • Are the episodes online?
  • Yes. On Nick's official website.
  • Do they block the vids from non-desktop browsers?
  • Not that I know of. I only have a desktop, so I wouldn't know.
  • When I tried watching the first two on the preview site they would not work on mobile or PS3. ICS makes it easy to send a desktop id over but I do not know of a way to do that from the PS3.
  • Watching episodes 2 and 3 tonight with the society. They were all on the fence before the end of last semester till I showed them the first episode. I have never seen twenty people leap round a bar pretending to benders. The show reduced Uni students to children.

I think Tenzin is simply mistaken. He's probably assuming only the Avatar has that kind of power because Aang was the only one in his time to use it.

The Lion Turtle that taught Aang how to bend pure energy told him that "In the time before the Avatar, we bent not the elements, but the energy within ourselves". So, multiple people could do this. Possibly a lot of people, before the concept of bending was fractured and broken into four different ideologies and elements (something that Iroh and Huu touch on occasionally).

Perhaps Amon has reached the same kind of understanding of unity between the elements, that he can wield the same power.
  • Perhaps Amon has reached the same kind of understanding of unity between the elements, that he can wield the same power.
The ironic thing is that it would make Amon a bender himself (albeit an energy bender in this case). Self-loathing much?
  • I find it a bit frightening that even Amon's henchmen are potent enough that they can take down Mako and Bolin with ease. It really establishes how strong the resistance is.
