  • It's well-documented that the creators are fans and made the whole office watch it while making The Last Airbender.
I've recently been going through the artbook of the first series and there is a caption underneath an image of Aang in the avatar state saying, "Aang's glowing eyes were influence by Naota in the final episode of FLCL, one of our favorite anime series".
That was one of the "well-documented" instances I was referring to ;3 My friend has that art book. Thanks, though!
  • My boss's tentative theory is that Amon is Sokka's kid. Reasoning includes having not heard anything as to Sokka's fate or legacy, and the relative importance of everyone elses' children as significant figures in the world. Sokka certainly could've been in a situation as to be killed by benders, and could easily have instilled in his son a philosophy of being able to overcome bending with skill and forethought.

And something about the fact that, with the airships in Sozin's Comet coming from the Fire Nation to the Earth Kingdom, they may have flown near where the United Republic of Nations might once be. So, that space sword. That space sword may be floating about somewhere. And, I don't know if I can root for Korra if Amon has the space sword.

Just sharing a neat idea (the most awesome part being 'oh shit my boss is more awesome than I ever imagined').
  • Well you did see

the older version of Sokka in the flashback that Korra has of Aang's memories.

That is a great theory though, because you know that Sokka and Suki are an item. Since Suki is leader of the Kiyoshi warriors and at the end of the first series you see Ty Lee ends up joining them. Ty Lee is proficient in chi blocking and could have perhaps taught that to the Kiyoshi warriors.

For now, all we know is there it's all a mystery. I still think Amon is somehow related to Azula.
  • Brolin couldn't keep that spaghetti from falling out of his pockets. ;_;

    Girls man. Girls
Also, Brolin was hilarious when he saw his brother and Korra kissing :D

Actually, I think Sokka represented non-benders in the council at Republic City, seeing as the chair for the non-bending councilor is a boomerang, which is known as one of the symbols associated with Sokka.

Oh my gosh, for once we have a show with romantic teenage drama where people actually will speak their minds and act fairly reasonable. I have watched way too many anime where the entire plot is "people never talk to each other about the crushes they have on each other." This episode was satisfying in that there was a lot of honest confessing, and that fact made all the crazy love drama work really well.

Also Brolin is the guy to be Bros with.

  • I would like for the show to move past this "all pro bending all the time" state. I mean, it's obviously setup of Korra's inner dialogue and very significant for characters overall.. but I would have liked some variety this week.
  • You know, I was watching the newest episode and I was thinking, "Fuck. Asami looks so damn familiar. Who does she look like?!"

Then I see this on Bryan Konietzko's tumblr:
    image
No, she wasn't based on Lust, but damned if there isn't a resemblance.
  • No, she wasn't based on Lust, but damned if there isn't a resemblance.
Which is why we all went "OMG, she's clearly EVIL!" when she appeared.

  • I actually don't want her to be evil. I think that would be kind of a cop out.

I want her and Korra to end up as friends. Let them go through their girl-fights and in the end be doing each other's hair.

When she first appeared, that was everyone in the room's reaction here. That's all I meant by that. I think it would be way too obvious for her to actually turn out to be evil.

  • For me, it wasn't that she looks like Lust, it was just that way too often in a story whenever some mysterious girl steps in to steal the main character's love interest, they usually end up being evil. But I don't think that's what's going to happen here. Like everyone said, it's too cliche, but I think that cliche is what made everyone jump to that conclusion.
  • Yeah, but the minute I found out who her dad was, the first thought that came to mind was, "Someone is playing a long game here."
  • Does anyone know how many episodes/seasons we're getting for the Legend of Korra? For some reason, I thought it was only going to be 1 thirteen episode show, and since we're already up to episode 5, I hope I'm wrong.

Yeah, originally it was going to be something like 13, but then Nickelodeon picked it up for the full 26 episode season, which was part of the cause of the delay.

"Hey, you're cute. My Dad's Henry Ford and I can throw money at you. Wanna go out?"

    ...sounds legit.
  • To be fair, because she has basically infinite money, sponsoring their team for hitting him with her scooter isn't an unreasonable thing.
  • Yeah, I don't think that's the reasoning there. But I am curious to see how this unfolds!

What's infinite money? We had trouble with this last time...

Can they spend money like Bruce Wayne and still have heaps of cash? If the answer is yes, congratulations, you have infinite money.

  • Even when I use green text you guys take me seriously. Do I have to start up the tumblr again?

I didn't mind the pro bending. I thought it was pretty cool seeing the tournament. If anything, get it out of the way to see her further train in Air bending as well as in finding her spiritual side of being the Avatar.

This episode had me laughing so hard throughout it.

I was a roller coaster of emotions and reactions in that kissing scene. At first I was like, "Fuck yeah!" Then you saw Bolin and the look on his face and I was like, "NOOO!!! Sadness!" Then when he changed his expression to silly sadness and ran away in a flamboyant manner, it had me laughing.

I'm really liking Bolin. His silliness always makes me smile.

With the diner scene where it was an homage to the Lady & The Tramp spaghetti dinner scene, but with root beer floats, the belching was great. I love how non-dainty Korra is. It's just like Toph, and I love Toph.

With the 2nd round of the pro bending tournament, I thought it was awesome when they had the overtime with an 1 vs. 1 match in the small part of the arena that rose into the air. That was so cool. It goes to show how well thought out they made the sport of pro bending along with it's various rules we have seen in the previous episodes. I like how they also introduced some judo with the grappling between Bolin and the other guy. It's not just about bending, but actual martial arts. It just goes to show how much effort is actually put into the show. Not to also mention the "yellow fan" penalty.

In all honestly, I love this show more than my love for Ponies. I think there is a lot of potential for Korra/Avatar type memes to be made, if they haven't already. There are clever lines made by the characters, mainly Bolin, where I can it sparks and idea for a possible meme of some sort to be made, but I'm honestly too busy to do it. If there is a website for one already, please someone point me into the direction.

There are so many parts in this episode that really stuck out to that made me enjoy it that much more. The second part of the dinner scene where the enemy bending team tried to cause a fight with Korra and the expression on her face was great.

Also the scene where Mako goes and gets emo Bolin and Pabu is overstuffed with noodles and he drags his big belly over the floor following Mako & Bolin out the restaurant. I'm sure we'll be seeing many fan created Pabu amigurumi or plushes in the future.

Another thing to point out is the brief explanations of what's going on in the show with the 1940s type movie reel with the radio/pro bending announcer giving the synopsis. I think that's pretty cool.

@gomi, I completely agree with how awesome it was that everyone was upfront and honest for most part about their feelings and were understanding to help resolve the issues.

As for Asami, I don't want her to be evil either. I want her to be cool, but there will obviously be conflict between her and Korra.

As you can see, I'm 100% fangirl for this show.

    Girls.

    Seriously.

  • I think it was kinda strange that in this episode, the bending (at least in parts) seemed a lot more boxingy than eastern martial artsy.
  • Fighting styles have changed since their original roots. I think however what you are mostly referring to Ruffas, is Brolin's earth bending (since it's the only one I see that in). Since the Earth benders are limited to throwing the discs, it's possible to see how that style has formed.
  • I forgot to think of something. With pro bending, because of the rules the way people like Mako and Brolin fight represent their background. They are athletes, not warriors. They have no training in their respective traditional styles. Also the rules of how they fight are narrowed to small and quick blows, not full scale fighting.

It's not just Brolin, Mako does it too. And most of their opponents in the second match. It's not that it's strictly boxing now, but enough to be noticeable. It's probably a natural 'evolution' of the fighting styles since it's for entertainment now, not combat.
