Your going to have to define these terms you are using for me, since the definition I know ishttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamebaitand I must say that if you believe my intent was to "provoke an angry response (a "flame") or argument", then you didn't read my last post. I said the reason I posted was to hopefully coax people on the forum into doing something about it, by trying to create a connection between them not being able to make a tribes 2 server and not belonging to the subculture they subscribe themselves to. Using guilt and shame would be an appropriate definition for what I was doing, and I believe shaming people is how geeknights keeps people spelling correctly, so I felt, why not use the same tactic to keep a server up and running?
Dude, the entirety of this paragraph is the same as saying: "I don't do x, I do x!" where both instances of x are the same x. Was my response not with an angry enough tone for you to consider it to be angry? Really, you just gave the definition of flamebait and you are still convinced your attempt at kicking this thread again by insulting everyone else is not flamebait? I feel pretty justified in saying you're an idiot know, I had my doubts, but you cleared that up, thanks.
Uhh I don't follow. What does this have to do with anything, please explain. Is it even an insult?
I thought it up on the spot. I wanted to finish the post so condensed my last statement into 3 words. It's suprisingly how much crap those ghetto idiots sprout out other than more lowlife from their womens genitalia.
I am saying this because this conversation isn't going anywhere positive, and this was not the intention of me posting my original post.
Of course it doesn't go anywhere positive, insulting people never goes anywhere positive. What was your intention? Do you know what you posted? Do you understand what you said? Or should we just call you Steve?
Lastly, it is spelled 'waste'. My waist is normal in case you wondered.
Damnit, I just lost a post I was going to make. Normally every time I fill in any forum or email form with any more than two or three line of text I hit CMD A then CMD C to keep a copy as backup. This time I accidentally fit CMD Q instead and it Firefox closed. I wish someone would make a firefox extension to do this for me automagically so posts aren't lost.
Ironically, the subject of my post was failure and one conclusion was that if you want something to succeed you pretty much have to do all the legwork yourself.
I'm not sure if it's needed anymore, but the server is back up and running again at ihas.homeip.net:28000 There might be some stuff I forgot again, so if you can't access it there post here and I'll try to fix it.
As for getting 40+ people... the only idea I have, is for Scrym to announce a tournament of sorts with Super Extra Special Exclusive Limited Edition GeekNights Swag that could be some random crap, like pocket lint. People always want free crap, right?
Then why haven't you set one up?
I have a laptop that can not run Half life 2, as my gaming computer. I won't be able to change this until I can finish college. I know for a fact that my lappy will not be able to handle doing this.
Actually, unless you're still using one of those old bricks with 486 in them, your laptop can most likely manage it. It would be somewhat stupid to make a laptop into a dedicated server, but unless the plastics melt from keeping it on 24/7 it would do just fine. Based on my server, I'd say lappy with any CPU at 500Mhz and 256MB RAM would do just fine, even when running on XP. Although my estimates are based on low player count... Unless of course you meant non-dedicated server, I have no idea what that needs.

Write your post in a word processor or text editor outside of Firefox that has auto-save features. Then only copy it into Firefox when it's ready.

No shit!
I mean write it there to begin with instead of copying out of Firefox.
Of course. Hitting cmd a cmd c every now and then is usually all the backup I need. I do it throughout any post I write without even thinking. This time though I just missed and hit q instead. Oh, and I'd just copied a little bit of text so the clipboard didn't contain the entire post. I've not lost a post for months so I'm happy to not bother with non-firefox text editors.
Either way, the point of my original point was that if I want a new firefox extension, and I really want it to happen, the best course would be to do it myself or else it will probably fail. This was in response to another post about failure that I failed to post. Blindingly obvious comments like yours really added nothing to the conversation.
Then again, my original lost post contributed far more than either of my last three.
I know there is a Firefox extension that lets you control Firefox using vim commands. We could make a Firefox extension that actually replaces all textinput objects with vim, including the ability to :wq. Or maybe just some sort of right-click in a text input box to "open in vim". It shouldn't be too difficult.
Along with python and object oriented programming, vim is something I'm only just getting to grips with. I've no idea what :wq does, but I'll look into it.

It saves and exits. If you've been using vim, I'm kinda confused as to how you could have not been able to conjecture that knowing that :w is save/write and :q is quit.
Okay, my life is fairly settled down. Let's give this a go. Dedicated server is up. Torrents are off. Router ports are open. Preliminary tests are great.
(Also, my IP is not static, but it only changes when the company does a hard reset to the modem, not when I power it off, so we should be fine. They only do a hard reset if I request it.)
Also, I'm not worried about it enough to look much, but is there a way to make a process for the dedicated server that just runs when I start windows? That would be so much simpler.
I'm going to a friend's house, but I'm taking my computer. I'm going to see what I can do about getting a dedicated computer for the tribes server. I have a bunch of parts lying around, so it shouldn't be a problem.
So, I think we need to come up with a good day to all plan on playing some tribes. I have no preference really, I just need input from everyone else.
Also, how much beef does the tribes server need? Any really if it's just a dedicated server and not playing?

By today's standards not that much. Dual core 1.8ghz (rough estimate) should do it, the dual core will let the server have a core to itself even though it's a single thread program. That's if we really stress it with the full number of people.
We really just need it to be reliable so that we can organize events weeks ahead.
Ok, how does 8pm EST sound? It's the only time that means I'm not awake stupid late. I'll give the pings a test and maybe contact the owner to see if anyone else plays on it regularly. Also, need to pick a day we can make each week/fortnight/month.
Edit: Have you tested to see if this server is still up? The posts in those threads are from 2006.
Well it might be some use to keep track of these, especially if there are people playing on them but for the hassle involved we can set up our own server if we ever do this seriously..
That would be the best since we could keep track of the server, choose the maps, settings, set passwords. But I think that we won't get enough people for the server unless we advertise it a bit.
Perhaps some posts on the Dave and Joel, Penny Arcade, etc forums? I heard there was some enthusiasm for this over there.
Penny Arcade... forums? Why go to its forums? Why not go to its owners instead. Did these men of proven hilarious video-game-industry-related commentary poured into comic form not played, enjoyed and even loved Tribes 2 themselves?
Yes, a mad idea, what else did you expect from me?
