  • Xpadder works fine for that and isn't that shady.
    Still kinda shady.
The game isn't broken at all. You are the one trying to play it in a way that it wasn't intended to be.
Playing it on a PC with keyboard or mouse and keyboard is insanely uncomfortable.
    Your arms are broken.

Robotron: 2084 is the first ever game in this genre. It is almost exactly as old as I am. It had two joysticks on the arcade cabinet. The genre is known as "Robotron shooter" because of that. Every good game in that genre, including Smash TV and Geometry Wars, is played with dual analog sticks.

The fact that this game is not means that it is a game that is already worse than the original game in the genre. It would be like if I made a first person shooter today that was worse than Wolfenstein 3D. Or if I made a platforming game worse than Donkey Kong. It's an epic fuck up.

Uhh, Isaac does not belong to the twin-stick shooter genre, nor is it trying to. That's like calling an Elder Scrolls game an FPS just because it uses a first person view and you can shoot arrows and fire and shit.

You move and you shoot simultaneously in separate directions. There is no other acceptable control method for that interaction other than two sticks.

Two d-pads? D-pad and four facebuttons of controller? Similar games can and should be made with different types of controls and controllers.

I might think that gamepad with good d-pad is the superior way to play platformers, but if a game is well made for keyboard (like Cave Story) or xbox's terrible d-pad (Super Meat Boy) then it's just sign that the developers did their job well. And Isaac plays really well on keyboard. I once played with pad, but in the end I prefer keyboard with that game.

Also should all fpses control like Doom did?

  • Binding of Isaac is actually kind of awkward with analog sticks because the controls aren't at all analog. Shooting is North East South West only, nothing in between.
  • I kind of like the WASD to move and arrows to shoot of it. I've logged well over 30 hours using that control scheme.

I have yet to install Binding of Isaac but this is a very interesting piece of information. In any case, all of this bickering about how to best control it and shady software has pushed it towards the bottom of my ever-growing list of great games to play.

Don't let all this discourage you from trying it. Isaac is a fast game to play, just install it and give it a go, forming your own opinions how well or badly it controls.

  • Oh definitely don't get me wrong. I've put 19 hours in and have no intentions of slowing any time soon, though Skyrim is certainly taking priority at the moment.
  • I really don't mind the keyboard controls. With the fact that there are no diagonals, you might be better off using like a SNES control scheme to play.

That's how I've been playing it and it works just fine for me.

  • JoyToKey is shitty and it's shitty that Binding of Isaac not only doesn't have native controller support, but recommends shitty software in place of it. That said, it's a fantastic game that, like a few others have claimed, is best controlled by the WASD + arrows configuration. If it's uncomfortable to you and perfectly fine to most others, maybe you're relying on the gamepad too much? I dunno, either way, that's clearly your own problem.

  • Try getting the bible if you haven't beaten Mom yet. Its an insta-kill for her and her heart, and its only 15 coins of you can find it.
  • Speaking of game pads for a PC, is it the general consensus that the X Box 360 controller works best? I've had Super Meat Boy installed for over a year, and have yet to fully play it due to not owning a game pad. I own a couple of wireless controllers already, anyway to get these to work, or do I need to buy a wired one?

Yes, they are the best gamepad for PC. You'll need a dongle to make the wireless controllers work. The wired ones work natively over USB and have a nice long cord, though.

  • The wired one plugs in directly and works immediately with any games that support it (most games, including Super Meat Boy). The wireless one requires a usb dongle, but it's still really simple. Also, with the dongle, you can use *any* xbox controllers. I have Guitar Hero 3 for the PC, and my wireless 360 guitar works with that dongle, no fanciness necessary.

Unfortunately, because Microsoft are idiots who don't understand how people want to use their products, they discontinued both the dongle and the wireless controllers (maybe that's changed, but it was definitely the case last year). That said, you can still pick them up for relatively cheap from either Amazon or Best Buy, you just might wanna do it sooner rather than later. If you want the wireless controller, it would also be a good idea to get the charge and play kit (maybe it's plug and play.. should be obvious when you're looking for it), which comes with a rechargeable battery and cable to connect your controller via USB to your PC for recharging. You can use it to charge while playing, no swapping out batteries, and it's only $15 or so. Totally worth it.
  • Also, Dealextreme has a wireless adapter for the 360 controller, it's identical to the ones Microsoft made, because they pretty much come from the same factory.

Thanks for the info. Now I know how I'm spending my holiday gift cards.
Also, does anyone have advice on how to make sure my 360 rechargeable batteries don't die after a month or two? I bought like 4 last year, and they're all dead; I've been using AA's for the last few months.

  • The Diorama of Excalibur James 2: Divine Awakening.
  • Prof, what do you mean they discontinued the wireless controllers? That's pretty much all I've seen. Most of the wired ones are almost as expensive as the wireless or are some shitty 3rd party ones.

I meant that the wired controllers were discontinued, which is probably why they're nearing the wireless ones in price. Microsoft also discontinued the wireless adapter. I mean seriously, what the fuck? Do they not realize that PC gaming still exists in a big way, and many of us want gamepads? Whatever, at least you can still find them somewhere.

  • But...but they still have Games For Windows Live! That means they care about PC gaming! Really guys!
  • Just get a cheap reverse-engineered Chinese dongle. Yeah, it's a shady bootleg, and yeah, there's no support or documentation other than the fact that it's plug-n-play and there are some notes on websites in places. That said, it's only $5 on DealExtreme and they work.

lol, that sounds like a terrible porn plot.

I'll give them the thumbs up. I've got one, works perfectly.

  • Playing Super Mario 3D. It's really samey and mediocre. Also, it does that thing Nintendo's been doing where it periodically tells you to stop playing.
  • I'll probably just buy the dongle. I still want a wired controller so I'll have a 3rd controller and it just works on the pc, but when its almost the same price as a wireless its pretty outrageous.

Well I beat Modern Warfare 3. It's just Call of Duty, but again. As flawed as it is, its still fun multiplayer which is the reason I got it. Other than that I've mainly been playing a lot of Binding of Isaac, and some Fallout 3 and Skyward Sword.

Are the single player campaigns of the Modern Warfare worth playing, or rather purchasing, the game for? I own Modern Warfare 2, and have only played the multiplayer. I refrained from playing single player since I haven't played the first Modern Warfare at all, and haven't bought MW3; am I missing anything by skipping the first game, or should I try and acquire the first one on the cheap cheap?
  • Let's play Ancient Greek Punishments!

Go on, beat the high score. I dare you.
