Just watched Roger Dodger starring Boris from Royal Pains and Jesse Eisenberg, which is all about an uncle trying to teach his 16-year-old nephew about sex and how to get it.

I'm not sure yet how I feel about this one. Good, for sure, and moody. There's some neat camera work driving the atmosphere, and quick cuts that give some really subtle contextual pinning without spelling out certain things for you. The dialogue's completely unrealistic but brilliant in an over-wraught way, similar to James Spader's manner in Boston Legal. Also, the main character doesn't experience significant redemption by the end -- there's a tiny shift, but I don't think his tragic lifestyle has changed.

The film does get credit for going pretty damned dark in spots.

  • I would highly recommend that anyone considering seeing the new Wall Street wait until it hits DVD. Oliver Stone is losing his touch.
  • Killers is a below-average movie that tries a variant of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. News flash: Katherine Heigl is cute but not a good actor; Ashton Kutcher is cut but lacks personality. You know, I think he might actually mature into a Pierce Brosnan-type actor given 20 years.

There's a weak plot twist that's telegraphed early on. There are also a handful of cameos that are interesting but don't really add much (Usher as a drug store clerk, Lois Griffin and the comic book guy from Big Bang Theory wield automatic rifles, Rob Riggle in a surprisingly athletic turn).

This one only barely escaped me turning it off, and only because I had my laptop to distract me.
  • Once I realized that Killers wasn't a version of the Ernest Hemingway novel, I lost all interest.

It's the usual formula for that sort of movie. Male is too perfect, appears to be hiding something, female either gets nosy and figures it out or accidentally stumbles upon it, and he's never hiding an affair, or anything bad, but is in fact hiding that he's even more exciting and interesting than Mr already Perfect appeared, and invariably woman is drawn into the situation, and is comically inept but the big strong male saves her all the time anyway until suddenly out of nowhere at the end of the movie, either a montage or an epiphany later, she's suddenly hyper-competent, saves herself, possibly saves him, and they are super awesome perfect spy couple.

As much as I dislike the idea of Tom Cruise, Go see "Knight and Day" instead. It's not the best movie I've ever seen, but at least the actors are competent at, y'know, acting, and the movie isn't a contrived series of events which are leading to the end point the writers desired, rather than having the movie lead to a natural point the story leads to.

I've not heard a single positive review from either critics or friends.

Never said it was good, but If you're going to see a bad movie of that type, at least see the slightly better one.

In all fairness, Knight and Day had about a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, while Killers had 12%. While it is a consensus website, it is reliable with the Amazing Movies or Shit Movies. Also, I hate Katherine Heigl, there's something wrong with her.

I actually saw Legend of the Guardians yesterday, and I had a really nice time in it. The 3D is spectacular with the visuals, flight/fight scenes, the textures on the animals and the backgrounds. ESPECIALLY the backgrounds. It's a little basic for a fantasy story and I think there's too many characters, but it's really solid animated feature. One thing I really appreciated about the film, was that it was PG for real reasons. Not because of sexual innuendo or pop culture humor. It had several themes of death, war, betrayal, battle...it might be too much for really little kids. But I really had a good time coming out of it. And oh, how I love Hugo Weaving's Voice.

The only flaw I had with it, is that Zack Snyder had to have one of his dumb music scenes. It was a training montage, with a song by Owl City. It wouldn't be so bad if that band didn't have the lyrics of a corn-covered cheeseball.
  • just saw harry brown, I liked it, gave me a reminder of the first death wish movie.
  • I'm getting ready to enlighten some people with ... Crank and Crank 2: High Voltage.

I heard that it was incredibly boring.

Also, Black Dynamite is the greatest movie ever. I THREW THAT SHIT BEFORE I GOT IN THE ROOM!

  • After hearing Scrym crazily talk up Attack the Gas Station, I thought to myself "This sounds awesome!!". So I got a torrent of it and watched it. My thoughts after seeing it "...that was good?" Overall, I was disappointed by it. I expected it to be so much more considering how much hype Scrym gave it, but I ended up not liking it at all. Oh well, nothing really lost in the end (of the experience that is).
  • As far as I'm concerned, Attack the Gas Station II is much better.

Oh c'mon, the ending is amazing.

Are you talking about the confrontation or what happens during the credits?
  • I'm talking about the part that involves a lighter.
  • What happened with that in the first one? It's been a while.

Oh yeah, that was pretty intense. Other than that, not much else appealed to me.

  • ATTACK ONLY ONE
  • Let Me In was fantastic, it's so nice to see not only a traditional horror movie but also a traditional vampire movie in this age of almost nothing but torture porn and slasher flicks.
  • Let Me In
Has anyone seen both the original and this remake and have an opinion on new vs. old?

The original version takes some things that were briefly mentioned in the remake and expands on them further, but it's not necessarily something that people wanted to know about (like how Eli/Abby used to be a boy, in the remake she just says that she's nothing). The two movies are very close, the remake just doesn't go into as much of the non-horror movie disturbing stuff as the original.

  • The Social Network does a fantastic job of portraying everybody in the movie as either a pretentious little cockass or a bitch except the bit players. And I loved it. It was a great blend of humor and drama that taught me about Facebook's founding (or at least a dramatized version of it).
  • Just watched Cloudy with a chance of meatballs it was very enjoyable kids movie with a character voiced by Bruce Campbell :-p
  • This morning I saw Seven Days in May for the first time. Wow. Why couldn't Rod Serling have written for more movies?
  • The first movie I saw in the fishbowl (i.e. a glass room with a tv and dvd player in it in the lobby of my res hall) is Pulp Fiction. Never saw it before. Got some weird looks from the people on their way to class.
  • Watched "The Other Guys" - a Somewhat Mediocre comedy, but it's not really bad, just predictable. The only thing I didn't predict is how they got rid of the supercops at the start.

    Anal rape does that.

So, what'd you think? Did it live up to its legend?
