Remember, if something is being given away for free, YOU are the real product being sold. From my DCU experience, I suspect SOE has found some way of converting player misery and boredom into clean power they can sell back to the grid.
I spent an hour or so on DC Universe last night. Made a masked hooded businessman in a suit named Serious Business and ran around Gotham beating the shit out of people. I was very disappointed by the character creator. It seems much more limiting than City of Heroes, as was the power selection. Still, the combat seems superior, and the level grind goes very fast. Made it to level 5 by the time I had finished 3 quests. Supposedly you can hit the cap in like 3 days. Honestly I don't see myself playing it that much more. I think I'm basically done with MMOs until Guild Wars 2.
Anyone know of a good way to buy some more licenses for Terraria? I wasn't able to buy a 4-pack during the last sale, and Steam support wasn't very helpful, telling me to buy them one at a time.
Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition taught me to NEVER buy any game when it comes out. They'll just fuck me with a much-updated, much better, cheaper version mere months out.

I absolutely agree pragmatically, but also I have no major games to play right this moment and I know that there are a few games coming down soon-after that will soak some of my time if I let them. Not that I don't have a million other things to potentially take my attention if I'm not playing games.
I will also be confronted with this problem with "The Old Republic", which I want to play... but not at the price-point they have it at.
I still can't decide whether to buy Skyrim today or wait for the first significant steam sale ($40 or less).
I am having this same damned problem. =/ If only Skyrim had Multiplayer to make it an easy choice. =/
I had the same issue with new-vegas last year, which I waited on (and am still technically waiting on) and they only dropped it ~$10 for the Christmas sale. Of course, by the time it dropped to the ~$20 I wanted to buy it at, I had learned that it was not as good as I had wanted and now I'll probably only pick it up by the time "Fallout 4" comes around.

Gaming is in a really odd place. Right now, it's almost always better for the customer to wait on picking up a game because of "Game plus all DLC" editions and I think most worthwhile DLC that you get for pre ordering the game or getting it early ends up being available later. For example, I got last year's WWE game from Best Buy, and it came with a code to give me Bret Hart in the game. Fast forward a few months and I can either buy Bret Hart separately as a DLC character or I could get the "Get all DLCs" pack that would include Bret. I didn't benefit at all from buying the game early on, except that I got it in a buy 2 get one free or something sale. On the other hand, people not buying a game in massive numbers early completely screws the people making the game. Studios are being broken up left and right by their parent companies, and if you want to make a game with cutting edge graphics, you almost have to work with a big company to pull it off now. Yes, there are people like us who wouldn't especially mind if Elder Scrolls still looked like the first screen shot Churba just posted, but the mainstream wants that second screen shot's level of graphics.
I remember buying the Morrowind "Collector's Edition" for ~$10 more than the normal game. Game companies have realized that there are "big fish" customers out there willing to drop $100, $200, $1000 on even temporary minor advantages. They're just trying to figure out how to soak that sweet easy money in, and in doing so fragmenting the customer base and creating an inferior end-user environment for the rest of us.
It's silly, but I think it might move more and more towards the "pay what you want" pricing model given some time and maturity.
Just one of the bajillion issues that cause the game industry to be a crazy place to try to make a living.

I'm still waiting on New Vegas as well. I fear Skyrim will spoil me when I finally do get New Vegas. I think, though, that the different motifs will offset that feeling quite a bit. Plus, I think it will be a fin exercise to see what the team did between Skyrim and F:NV in reverse order.
The second Indie Royale bundle is out, but I haven't really heard of any of the games except Been there Dan that/Time Gentlemen, Please! which I already have and seem pretty lame to me.
