I'm kinda amazed at how engrossing it is. I feel like writing a fictional journal using my game experience as a basis.
As soon as I make some papyrus, that is.
I had thought of doing something like that. Doing a blog about my character going out into the wilderness and exploring and writing about the interesting things I would find. Never ended up doing in though, it was too much fun to play and couldn't get myself to stop long enough to write the posts.
What server wrappers and mods are you running? I'm starting a small server for some friends.
I'm running hMod with a handful of plugins, but the community is abandoning it in favor of the upcoming Bukkit project since Hey0 has abandoned hMod maintenance.
I can't wait to get home and unwind with some Minecraft tonight. It's been a long, long, long, stressful day.
Making a chandelier that encased log blocks in glass did not work. Library roof burned off. >_< Chandelier now lit with torches instead of impressive flaming logs. Lava idea abandoned entirely (for now).
The flaming log trick is hard to pull off in large quantities, the moment any block near the wood updates, it recalculates the wood block and realises it's on fire. My lighthouse suffered much the same fate.
Is there a good way to have anything near wood planks that is made of fire, and not have the plank blocks catch? They were a good 2-3 blocks away from the wood plank ones too, so that struck me as odd.
Part of what Notch has done is measure the temperature and radiance of every block to control how far fire spreads. So stop that radiance, you have to interpose something solid between the fire and wood. Stone, for instance, works very well. Also, heat seems to go vertical easier than it goes horizontal, at least from my own observations.
There is a block from the Nether that catches fire but never goes out, apparently.
Yes, but SMP does not support portals to the Nether yet. I can start the entire server in the Nether if people would like to hang out there/harvest some Netherrak (the name of the fire stone, previously also known as bloodstone). You can also get the materials to make glowstone from the Nether.
Our new server policy (based on Jason's, so credit goes where credit is due), is that one lava bucket get you one diamond tool, two lava buckets gets you 10 pieces of your chosen netherstone (soul stone, netherrack, or glowstone), and three gets you a suit of diamond armor.
So far, it's working pretty well, and people are getting some netherrack up in their inventories.

Update: Turns out sponge has been turned into just an inactive block in current versions.
